This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flip of a switch, a blink of an eye… death can come that quickly. As mortals, we all wish for that to be our case, blissfully devoid of our own suffering or the suffering of others who will painfully watch our final days. Death by electrocution is usually quick, but not necessarily painless. The muscles of the body contract in wracking spasms and control of bodily functions is lost. The smell of singed flesh and burning hair permeate the room – certainly unpleasant for those the deceased left behind. In the United States, the process of electrification took several decades. Its proponents believed it was imminently safer and more reliable than oil lanterns and gaslights. Its opponents questioned its safety, and newspaper accounts were rife with stories of accidental electrocutions as well as intentional executions. Archibald “Sparky” Thompson was involved in electrifying homes and businesses across broad swaths of Pennsylvania and Maryland. At one time, he worked for Thomas Edison, but was dismissed after a series of pranks backfired. Venturing out on his own, death seemed to follow his work from city to city. Was Sparky responsible, or was he an unwitting accomplice to someone else’s evil deeds?

Book Synopsis Genealogy and Fiction in Hardy by : T. O ́Toole
Download or read book Genealogy and Fiction in Hardy written by T. O ́Toole and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-08-18 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tess O'Toole uncovers Hardy's career-long fascination with the points of intersection between genealogy and fiction and argues that this relationship fuels much of his writing. Hereditary patterns are the product of narrative compulsion; the circulation of the family story is necessary to reproduce the history it records. As well as analyzing Hardy's characteristic treatment of family history, this volume revises existing accounts of genealogical narrative, and in its conclusion considers the presence in other nineteenth- and twentieth-century novels of motifs foregrounded in Hardy's work.

Book Synopsis A Lineage of Grace by : Francine Rivers
Download or read book A Lineage of Grace written by Francine Rivers and published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete biblical historical fiction compilation by the New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love and A Voice in the Wind. The Bible is filled with inspiring stories of unlikely candidates God chose to change eternity. This bestselling compilation in one volume contains five novellas about such people―women in the family tree of Jesus Christ. Tamar. Rahab. Ruth. Bathsheba. Mary. Each was faced with extraordinary―even scandalous―challenges. But they had courage. They lived daring lives. Sometimes they made mistakes―big mistakes. And yet God, in His infinite mercy and grace, used them to bring forth the Christ, the Savior of the world. Their stories still hold great meaning and inspiration for us today. Tamar risked her life and reputation to be the woman she was called to be. See how the Lord uses our circumstances and our steps toward Him, however faltering, to fulfill His plan. Rahab was exploited by men who saw only her beauty, yet she held fast to her faith in God and was rewarded. Discover how God seeks and finds those whose hearts are tender toward Him, no matter how far away they are. Ruth’s loyalty, especially toward her mother-in-law Naomi, helped her persevere in the face of tragedy, and God gave her a second chance at love. Be encouraged that God will provide even when all hope seems lost. Bathsheba’s scandalous affair with David did not end in one night. Learn that God is willing to restore and redeem those lost in the depths of despair who call out to Him. Mary is one of the most revered women in history. But first, she was an ordinary woman striving to please God in the same way women still do today. When God spoke, Mary responded in obedience which changed the world forever. Each novella includes an in-depth Bible study perfect for personal reflection or group discussion. Watch these five women in the Bible come to life and learn from their examples of hope, faith, love, and obedience.

Book Synopsis The Novel and the Problem of New Life by : Aaron Matz
Download or read book The Novel and the Problem of New Life written by Aaron Matz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel since the nineteenth century has displayed a thorny ambivalence toward the question of having children. In its representation of human vitality it can seem to promote the giving of life, but again and again it betrays a nagging doubt about the moral implications of procreation. The Novel and the Problem of New Life identifies this tension as a defining quality of the modern British and European novel. Beginning with the procreative-skeptical writings of Flaubert, Butler, and Hardy, then turning to the high modernist work of Lawrence, Woolf, and Huxley, and culminating in the postwar fiction of Lessing and others, this book chronicles the history of the novel as it came to accommodate greater misgivings about the morality of reproduction. This is the first study to examine in literature a problem that has long troubled philosophers, environmental thinkers, and so many people in everyday life.

Book Synopsis Between Genealogy and Epistemology by : Todd May
Download or read book Between Genealogy and Epistemology written by Todd May and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1993-03-26 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michel Foucault introduced a new form of political thinking and discourse. Rather than seeking to understand the grand unities of state, economy, or exploitation, he tried to discover the micropolitical workings of everyday life that have often founded the greater unities. He was particularly concerned with how we understand ourselves psychologically, and thus with how psychological knowledge developed and came to be accepted as true. In the course of his writings, he developed a genealogy of psychology, an account of psychology as a historically developed practice of power. The problem such an account raises for much of traditional philosophy is that Foucault's critique of psychological concepts is ultimately a critique of the idea of the mind as a politically neutral ontological concept. As such, it renders politically suspect all forms of subjective foundationalism, and the epistemological justification for Foucault's own writings is then called into question. Drawing on the writings of such Anglo-American philosophers as Wilfrid Sellars and Ludwig Wittgenstein, Todd May refutes the idea that Foucault's critiques of knowledge, and especially psychological knowledge, undermine themselves.
