Download or read book Fiske WordPower written by Edward B Fiske and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Exclusive Method You Can Use to Learn—Not Just Memorize—Essential Words A powerful vocabulary expands your world of opportunity. Building your word power will help you write more effectively, communicate clearly, score higher on standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, or GRE, and be more confident and persuasive in everything you do. Using the exclusive Fiske method, you will not just memorize words, but truly learn their meanings and how to use them correctly. This knowledge will stay with you longer and be easier to recall—and it doesn't take any longer than less-effective memorization. How does it work? This book uses a simple three-part system: 1. Patterns: Words aren't arranged randomly or alphabetically, but in similar groups based on meaning and origin that make words easier to remember over time. 2. Deeper Meanings, More Examples: Full explanations—not just brief definitions—of what the words mean, plus multiple examples of the words in sentences. 3. Quick Activities: Frequent short quizzes help you test how much you've learned, while helping your brain internalize their meanings.
Book Synopsis Time in Language by : Wolfgang Klein
Download or read book Time in Language written by Wolfgang Klein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the various ways in which time is reflected in natural language. All natural languages have developed a rich repetoire of devices to express time, but linguists have tended to concentrate on tense and aspect, rather than discourse principles. Klein considers the four main ways in which language expresses time - the verbal categories of tense and aspect; inherent lexical features of the verb; and various types of temporal adverbs. Klein looks at the interaction of these four devices and suggests new or partly new treatments of these devices to express temporality.
Book Synopsis Manual of Deixis in Romance Languages by : Konstanze Jungbluth
Download or read book Manual of Deixis in Romance Languages written by Konstanze Jungbluth and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deixis as a field of research has generated increased interest in recent years. It is crucial for a number of different subdisciplines: pragmatics, semantics, cognitive and contrastive linguistics, to name just a few. The subject is of particular interest to experts and students, philosophers, teachers, philologists, and psychologists interested in the study of their language or in comparing linguistic structures. The different deictic structures – not only the items themselves, but also the oppositions between them – reflect the fact that neither the notions of space, time, person nor our use of them are identical cross-culturally. This diversity is not restricted to the difference between languages, but also appears among related dialects and language varieties. This volume will provide an overview of the field, focusing on Romance languages, but also reaching beyond this perspective. Chapters on diachronic developments (language change), comparisons with other (non-)European languages, and on interfaces with neighboring fields of interest are also included. The editors and authors hope that readers, regardless of their familiarity with Romance languages, will gain new insights into deixis in general, and into the similarities and differences among deictic structures used in the languages of the world.
Book Synopsis Linguistics in Philosophy by : Zeno Vendler
Download or read book Linguistics in Philosophy written by Zeno Vendler and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a major attempt to reconcile the empirical basis of linguistic science with the a priori nature of philosophical reasoning. Its purpose is to show how the methods and findings of linguistic science, especially of transformational grammar, can be used to cast light upon central problems of analytic philosophy. After dealing with recent objections to the use of linguistic techniques in philosophy, the author shows, with great force and clarity, how these techniques can be applied to such problems as the analysis of singular terms, the concepts of fact, event, and causality, and the meaning of the word "good."

Book Synopsis The Development of Past Tense Morphology in L2 Spanish by : M. Rafael Salaberry
Download or read book The Development of Past Tense Morphology in L2 Spanish written by M. Rafael Salaberry and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-02-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an extended analysis of the development of L2 Spanish past tense morphology among L1 English-speaking learners. The study addresses three major questions: (1) what is the developmental pattern of acquisition of past tense verbal morphology among tutored learners? (2) what are the relevant factors that may account for the particular distribution of morphological endings (especially at the beginning stages)?, and (3) how does instruction affect the movement from one stage to the next? The analysis provides a reassessment of the general claim of Andersen’s lexical aspect hypothesis and proposes minor changes that may render the hypothesis more appropriate for, especially, L2 classroom learning. The study includes an overview of theoretical positions on the notion of lexical versus grammatical aspect, and a comparison of the findings from previous empirical studies on the development of past tense verbal morphology among both classroom and naturalistic learners.

Book Synopsis Vergleichende Syntax der indogermanischen Sprachen by : Berthold Delbrück
Download or read book Vergleichende Syntax der indogermanischen Sprachen written by Berthold Delbrück and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Brugmann originally intended to include a volume on syntax in his comparative grammar of Indo-European, but as that ambitious project expanded, he and his publisher enlisted Berthold Delbrück (1842-1922) to take on the treatment of syntax. Delbrück's three volumes on inflection and phrase and sentence structure appeared between 1893 and 1900 and remain the fullest treatment of Indo-European syntax to this day. In this, his first volume, Delbrück gives an overview of the prevailing academic positions in the field of Indo-European comparative syntax of his day. He applies the Neogrammarian methodology used by Brugmann, and meticulously presents data relating to nouns, the case system, adjectives, pronouns, numerals, adverbs and prepositions, giving particular attention to the ablative and the dative in a number of Indo-European languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century, Austro-Hungarian society was undergoing a significant re-evaluation of gender roles and identities. Debates on these issues revealed deep anxieties within the multi-ethnic empire that did not resolve themselves with its dissolution in 1918. The concepts of gender and modernity were modified by the various regimes that ruled the empire's successor states in the twentieth century and have been redefined again in the post-Communist period, but the Habsburg Monarchy's influence on gender and modernity in Central Europe is still palpable. --
