Dabei mag es durchaus überraschen, dass sich die literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche Raumforschung selbst des Konzepts der Grenze noch kaum angenommen hat – zumindest nicht in seiner konkreten Bedeutung einer exakt lokalisierbaren Trennlinie zwischen zwei verschiedenen Räumen. Genau an diesem Punkt setzt der vorliegende Band ein. Er hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Grenzmetapher versuchsweise wieder auf ihre wörtliche Bedeutung zurückzuführen. Wie werden Staatsgrenzen und sonstige konkret im Raum verortete Grenzen in der Literatur thematisiert? Wie werden sie erlebt, semantisiert, und was kann eine Beschäftigung mit ihnen wiederum zum Verständnis des allgemeiner gefassten Grenzbegriffs und seiner aktuellen Konjunktur beitragen? An Texten, in denen dieses Motiv reflektiert wird, herrscht, wie sich eindringlich zeigt, kein Mangel: Es geht um die Grenze der Welt und um die des Schlaraffenlandes, es geht um Hausschwellen, Fjorde, Flüsse, Steinwälle, sicht- und unsichtbare Fronten im Krieg und nicht zuletzt um Mauern in China, Berlin und anderswo.

Micro-sites, localities, empires as well as virtual or imaginary spaces attract increasing attention. In most of these works, space emerges as a social construct rather than a mere container. This collection examines the potential and limitations of spatial approaches for the political history of pre-industrial Europe. Adopting a broad definition of 'political', the volume concentrates on two key questions: Where did political exchange take place? How did spatial dimensions affect political life in different periods and contexts? Taken together, the essays demonstrate that pre-modern Europeans made use of a much wider range of political sites than is usually assumed - not just palaces, town halls and courtrooms, but common fields as well as back rooms of provincial inns - and that spatial dimensions provided key variables in political life, both in terms of territorial ambitions and practical governance and in the more abstract forms of patronage networks, representations of power and the emerging public sphere. As such, this book offers a timely and critical engagement with the 'spatial turn' from a political perspective. Focusing on the distinct constitutional environments of England and the Holy Roman Empire - one associated with early centralization and strong parliamentary powers, the other with political fragmentation and absolutist tendencies - it bridges the common gaps between late medieval and early modern studies and those between historians and scholars from other disciplines. Preface, commentary and a sketch of research perspectives discuss the wider implications of the essays' findings and reflect upon the value of spatial approaches for political history as a whole.

The comparison of cultural transfer processes by means of literary production from and about the Caribbean, embedded in a broader context of the circulation of culture and knowledge deciphers the different transculturations of European discourses in the colonies as well as the repercussions of these transculturations on the motherland’s ideas of the colonial other: The loss of a culturally binding centre in the case of the Spanish colonies – in contrast to France’s strong presence and binding force – is accompanied by a multirelationality which increasingly shapes hispanophone Caribbean literature and promotes the pursuit for political independence. The book provides necessary revision to the idea that the 19th-century Caribbean can only be understood as an outpost of the European metropolises. Examining the kaleidoscope of the colonial Caribbean opens new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation and questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity.
