Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beloved as the family storyteller, Dorothy Winthrop Bradford left behind at her death in 1987 diaries, letters, scrapbooks and memorabilia that date back to the Civil War and provide a picture of a way of life long gone - of a period when leisure time was plentiful and cars were few, when her hometown of Hamilton, Massachusetts was open country and Boston a closed society. These materials provide an intimate view of the vanished lifestyle of the upper classes between the two world wars. At the heart of the story is Dorothy Bradford's own life, and the 82 years she spent in the small town where she was born. It was a life, however, set against the vast canvas of her extened family, whose stories transport the reader back to colonial times, where one of her ancestors was the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and far across America and to the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa. From the Civil War to the Second World War, from turn-of-the-century Puerto Rico to the glories of the still-unspoiled West, the book is a virtual who's who of American h istory, filled with cameos by Teddy Roosevelt, Edith Wharton, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry James, Thomas Jefferson, and many more. Richly illustrated with more than 300 photographs, this intriguing volume looks at a woman who's life may have seemed, on the surface, narrow and predictable, but in reality, touched upon many of the great currents of American history.

Works include such highlights in their creator's oeuvre as Jacques-Louis David's sketchbooks for The Coronation of Napoleon and the Crowning of Josephine, Theodore Gericault's Mutiny on the Raft of the Medusa, Vincent van Gogh's The Blue Cart, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's Odalisque with the Slave, William Blake's illustrations for the Divine Comedy, Dante Gabriel Rosetti's Blessed Damozel, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler's Nocturne in Blue and Silver. In addition, an essay by Wolohojian provides a fascinating and informative description of Winthrop and the growth of his collection."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume proposes, in similar format but with recent photographs, illustrating the painting in their present state, the new edition of the book dedicated by Richard Offner in 1947 to the workshop of Bernardo Daddi, artist very much in demand in the first half of the 14th century. To some 70 pictures catalogued by Offner with entries which are now updated with new data on state and history as well as with bibliography, ten further, hitherto unpublished or little known items are given in this edition. The survey offered here makes the circle of Daddi, where several of chief figures of the Florentine painting in the second half of the Trecento were formed, one of the better known areas of the history of Italian painting of the Middle Age and early Renaissance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art Markets, Agents and Collectors brings together a wide variety of case studies, based on letters and detailed archival research, which nuance the history of the art market and the role of the collector within it. Using diaries, account books and other archival sources, the contributions to this volume show how agents set up networks and acquired works of art, often developing the taste and knowledge of the collectors for whom they were working. They are therefore seen as important actors in the market, having a specific role that separates them from auctioneers, dealers, museum curators or amateurs, while at the same time acknowledging and analyzing the dual positions that many held. Each chronological period is introduced by a contextual essay, written by a leading expert in the field, which sets out the art market in the period concerned and the ways in which agents functioned. This book is an invaluable tool for those needing a broader introduction to the intricate workings of the art market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features nearly 500 paintings, watercolors, pastels, and miniatures from Harvard University's storied, yet little-known, collection of American art. These works, many unpublished, are drawn from the Harvard Art Museums, the University Portrait Collection, the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, and other entities, and date from the early colonial years to the mid-19th century. Highlights include a rare group of 17th-century portraits, along with important paintings by Robert Feke, John Singleton Copley, Charles Willson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, and Washington Allston, in addition to works depicting western and Native American subjects by Alexandre de Batz, Henry Inman, and Alfred Jacob Miller, among others. Each work is accompanied by scholarly commentary that draws on extensive new research, as well as a complete exhibition and reference history. An introduction by Theodore E. Stebbins Jr. describes the history of the collection. Lavishly illustrated in color, this compendium is a testament to the nation's oldest collection of American art, and an essential resource for scholars and collectors alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering book explores the notion of 'radical decadence' as concept, aesthetic and lived experience, and as an analytical framework for the study of contemporary feminist textile art. Gendered discourses of decadence that perpetuate anxieties about women's power, consumption and pleasure are deconstructed through images of drug use, female sexuality and 'excessive' living, in artworks by several contemporary textile artists including Orly Cogan, Tracey Emin, Allyson Mitchell, and Rozanne Hawksley. Perceptions of decadence are invariably bound to the negative connotations of decay and degradation, particularly with regard to the transgression of social norms related to femininity and the female body. Excessive consumption by women has historically been represented as grotesque, and until now, women's pleasure in relation to drug and alcohol use has largely gone unexamined in feminist art history and craft studies. Here, representations of female consumption, from cupcakes to alcohol and cocaine, are opened up for critical discussion. Drawing on feminist and queer theories, Julia Skelly considers portrayals of 'bad girls' in artworks that explore female sexuality - performative pieces designed to subvert and exceed feminine roles. In this provocative book, decadence is understood not as a destructive force but as a liberating aesthetic.
