Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from: R. Gruber, Th. Hanser, Ph. Keeve, Ch. Khoury, J. Neugebauer, J. E. Zöller Bone and Soft Tissue Augmentation in Implantology addresses useful methods of bone grafting procedures in implant treatment based on current biologic principles and constitutes a unique reference in this field. The book describes, in over 760 pages and 2837 mostly color illustrations, the different possibilities available to augment the bone volume in width and height. The information presented includes not only the underlying scientific concepts of the different augmentation techniques with autogenous bone, but also the associated soft tissue management, from safe approaches to different possibilities for soft tissue augmentation and papilla reconstruction techniques. The book provides surgeons with a basic understanding of the biologic response to bone grafting procedures. Experienced implantologists will benefit from the in-depth background information, details of high-level surgical techniques, and scientific results, which will enable them to optimize their surgical procedures. Each chapter offers a wealth of information on the specific topic covered, with much attention given to the scientific concepts behind each one. Extensive case reports with step-by-step documentation allow readers to gain an impression of what is possible today in the 3D reconstruction procedures of the alveolar crest. Important criteria for success are presented as well as possible complications and their treatment. Bone and Soft Tissue Augmentation in Implantology is a must-read for every implantologist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and any dentist interested in surgery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: External fixation is now being used widely to maintain fractures, osteo tomies, and arthrodeses in a desired position during consolidation. Whereas external fixation has been readily accepted in European countries, its use has weathered a rather stormy course in North America, especially in the treatment of fractures. Only recently has external fixation found its rightful place on this continent as well. Many different models are on the market today, and the practitioner is faced with a difficult decision in selecting a model. Should he buy a system where the fracture has to be reduced first, or should he work with a device permitting a reduction after insertion of the pins? To enable surgeons to study the different systems, to discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and to permit them to put their hands on these devices and inspect them personally, the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Ottawa organized an applied basic science course in May 1981, External Fixation of Fractures. During this course, all major systems were pre sented to the participants. As happened during the course "Internal Fixation of Fractures" held two years ago, the rigidity of internal fixation was frequently and intensively debated. Whereas the rigidity of internal fixation cannot be altered during the course of healing, the rigidity of external fixation can be changed. In fact, with progression of union, rods of increasing elasticity can be used.

Book excerpt: This Atlas depicts in a clear manner the use of regional skin, muscle and musculocutaneous flaps as well as donor sites from distant regions of the body where vascularized skin, muscle, bone, and nerves can be harvested and transferred to the head and neck. Otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons and general surgeons use both regional and free flaps to reconstruct damage to the head and neck caused by cancer and trauma. This Atlas provides the surgeon with techniques for mastering different donor sites needed to find solutions to virtually every reconstruction problem. It provides detailed descriptions of the anatomy and harvesting techniques of the major regional and free-flap donor sites currently employed in head and neck reconstruction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human skull has many functions. The largest component of the skull, the neurocranium, protects and insulates the brain. It comprises the dome-shaped vault or calvaria, obviously a protective structure, and the more complex cranial base, which gives the vault a massive foundation and also houses the organs of hearing, balance, and smell. The facial skeleton, or splanchnocranium, encloses the upper airway and the mouth. Chewing, the cQ-ordinated action ofthe jaws and teeth, is a function of the facial skeleton. The orbits, formed from both calvarial and facial bones, house the eyes and their accessory muscles. The'skull also provides skeletal support for the muscles which affect speech and facial expression. It is largely by these that people communicate and display their emotions. Personality is judged on speech and on facial appearances, by conscious or subconscious aesthetic comparisons with cultural ideas-and prejudices. So the shape of the skull has, or can have, profound emotional significance.
