Download or read book The Disillusioned written by D. W. Scott and published by D.W.Scott. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DISILLUSIONED is a ruthlessly honest memoir of a young man who writes both searingly and disarmingly about the highs and lows, the perils and promise of our times. THE DISILLUSIONED documents the struggle all too common for recent generations: yearning to find a sense of worth and a purpose to their lives against the backdrop of abuses rife in modern society and the duplicity of political systems which favour the rich and powerful despite the hollow rhetoric that promises something else. THE DISILLUSIONED encompasses three decades, beginning with the impressionable child indoctrinated with the propaganda of Thatcher's Britain and suffering sexual abuse, a lack of role models and any sense of belonging. It is a gripping story of obsessive ambition, discrimination, sex, scams, suicidal impulses, alcoholism, the search for love, loss and the quest for redemption in New Zealand. It is the author's story, but also the story of a disillusioned silent majority; the story of young people bogged down with debt and disillusionment; the story, too, of the increasing dangers facing our children in a materialistic world where family bonds and values are sacrificed for high incomes and status. "THE DISILLUSIONED is a surprisingly compulsive read about what I call the Misfit Generation - the one beguiled at first by the challenge of rational economics and then bewildered by its effects. David Scott's odyssey is to find self-worth, to discover basic human values among the detritus of modern life. At the end you can't be sure he's made it. But his story matters and he tells it with the pace and directness of a pro." - Gordon McLauchlan, writer and book critic.

However -- like anything that stands tall and proud -- the city cast a great, dark shadow. The name of this shadow is the Gouz-Maise gang -- a loathsome band of cutthroats who turn their profit kidnapping children and demanding ransom. Ray, wide-eyed and innocent, was blissfully unaware of just how cruel the hyper-realistic world of Infinite Dendrogram would become.

Book Synopsis Tomorrow's Parties by : Jonathan Strahan
Download or read book Tomorrow's Parties written by Jonathan Strahan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twelve visions of living in a climate-changed world. We are living in the Anthropocene—an era of dramatic and violent climate change featuring warming oceans, melting icecaps, extreme weather events, habitat loss, species extinction, and more. What will life be like in a climate-changed world? In Tomorrow’s Parties, science fiction authors speculate how we might be able to live and even thrive through the advancing Anthropocene. In ten original stories by writers from around the world, an interview with celebrated writer Kim Stanley Robinson, and a series of intricate and elegant artworks by Sean Bodley, Tomorrow’s Parties takes rational optimism as a moral imperative, or at least a pragmatic alternative to despair. In these stories—by writers from the United Kingdom, the United States, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh, and Australia—a young man steals from delivery drones; a political community lives on an island made of ocean-borne plastic waste; and a climate change denier tries to unmask “crisis actors.” Climate-changed life also has its pleasures and epiphanies, as when a father in Africa works to make his son’s dreams of “Viking adventure” a reality, and an IT professional dispatched to a distant village encounters a marvelous predigital fungal network. Contributors include Pascall Prize for Criticism winner James Bradley, Hugo Award winners Greg Egan and Sarah Gailey, Philip K Dick Award winner Meg Elison, and New York Times bestselling author Daryl Gregory.
Book Synopsis The Stoic Life:Emotions, Duties, and Fate by : Tad Brennan
Download or read book The Stoic Life:Emotions, Duties, and Fate written by Tad Brennan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-06-23 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tad Brennan explains how to live the Stoic life - and why we might want to. Stoicism has been one of the main currents of thought in Western civilization for two thousand years: Brennan offers a fascinating guide through the ethical ideas of the original Stoic philosophers, and shows how valuable these ideas remain today, both intellectually and in practice. He writes in a lively informal style which will bring Stoicism to life for readers who are new to ancient philosophy. The Stoic Life will also be of great interest to philosophers and classicists seeking a full understanding of the intellectual legacy of the Stoics. Brennan starts from scrupulous attention to the evidence (references are provided to all of the standard collections of Stoic texts). He provides translations of the original texts, with extensive annotations that will allow readers to pursue further reading. No knowledge of Greek is required. An introductory section provides context by introducing the reader to the most important figures in the Stoic school, the philosophical climate in which they worked, and a brief summary of the leading tenets of the Stoic system. After this context is established, the book is divided into three sections. The first provides a thorough exploration of the Stoic school's theories of psychology, focusing on their analyses of fear, desire, and other emotions. The second develops the more centrally ethical topics of value, obligation, and right action. The third part explores the Stoic school's views on fate, determinism, and moral responsibility. For anyone interested in the origins of Western ethical thought, who wishes to understand the vast influence that Stoic philosophy has had on philosophy and religion up to our time, this book will be essential reading.

Download or read book Smile at Fear written by Chögyam Trungpa and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insights and strategies for claiming victory over fear, from “one of the most remarkable and brilliant teachers of modern times” (Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart) Many of us, without even realizing it, are dominated by fear. We might be aware of some of our fears—perhaps we are afraid of public speaking, of financial hardship, or of losing a loved one. Chögyam Trungpa shows us that most of us suffer from a far more pervasive fearfulness: fear of ourselves. We feel ashamed and embarrassed to look at our feelings or acknowledge our styles of thinking and acting; we don’t want to face the reality of our moment-to-moment experience. It is this fear that keeps us trapped in cycles of suffering, despair, and distress. In Smile at Fear, Chögyam Trungpa offers us a vision of moving beyond fear to discover the innate bravery, trust, and delight in life that lies at the core of our being. Drawing on the Shambhala Buddhist teachings, he explains how we can each become a spiritual warrior—a person who faces each moment of life with openness and fearlessness.

Book Synopsis Little Girl Black by : Cassandra Hudson
Download or read book Little Girl Black written by Cassandra Hudson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-05-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a work of fiction. Places, events, and situations in this story are purely fictional. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is coincidental. Little Girl Black confronts colorism and the black sheep syndrome and the many shades it comes in. That old saying don’t judge a book by its cover—I say open the book up and slowly read the literature in side, cover to cover, before forming an opinion. You may be pleasantly surprised on what you read. Bump what you hear, boss up, and form your own opinions. This book and all my Little Girl Black poetry books volumes 1 to 6 celebrate and confront dreams, religion, marriage, unfairness, sex, friendship, racism, strength, judgments, fantasy, love, education, families, power, and death, as well as many other situations. Life will sometimes come to you whether you’re looking for it or not. Here comes life kicking down your doors; it just walks in and puts its filthy feet up on your clean glass table, getting extremely comfortable, and you say to yourself, “What the hell is going on?” This is a good time to get down on your knees and give it all to the Lord, like in the play Your Arms Are Too Short to Box with God. Please let him do his job, but take notes. Ding, ding! The school of life is in session. The black sheep syndrome is not because you’re an African American or black or brown. Yes, being racist or racism plays a big part when a whole race is condemned because of the pigment in their skin, but there are little girl blacks and little boy blacks in every race that lives in every family. No one can stop you from dreaming. Your dreams live in your heart, mind, body, and soul; so every time you close your eyes to dream a little dream, hum a little tune, or recite a little poem, stop and introduce yourself to your destiny and say, “Hello, I’m so please to finally meet you. I have been waiting for you.” Yes, colorism. Racism within our own race—we all play a part. I say no matter what shade of chocolate you may be, love yourself, live to be mature, and dream to succeed and achieve everything your little heart desires. Unfairness or jealousy and looking down upon someone for whatever reasons and sometimes no reasons at all, just because who you look like or who you belong to—this syndrome is taught and learned and follows that little girl black or little boy black for generations. I say to all of you bullies and dream-stealers, shame on you. You need to check yourself!

Book Synopsis South Country Cowboy by : Judith Emmons
Download or read book South Country Cowboy written by Judith Emmons and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the granddaughter of a cattle rancher, twenty-one-year-old visual artist Alexandra Mackenzie knows full well how challenging it can be to carve a living out of prairie dust and gopher holes, but when she goes against her grandfather’s wishes and joins a Park’s Canada survey crew that’s examining options for a possible expansion of the Grassland Parks—hoping to expand her portfolio with spectacular prairie vistas—she had no idea just how strong the pushback would be from the area’s less-stable locals, as well as the families who’ve worked the land for generations. Local ranch hand Ryerson Coderre comes from just such a family and is no fan of expansion himself, but he can see the inevitability of it and the wisdom of working with the government rather than against it. Still, as tensions between the survey teams and the locals mount to dangerous levels, he finds himself the only person available to look out for the beautiful young surveyor. He can’t help but wish for a return to simpler times ... especially when local secrets, long since buried, begin inching their way closer to the surface. Alex’s long-term goal is earning a highly sought after scholarship to study art in Paris on the line, while Rye is caught between loyalty to his family and an undeniable fascination with the lovely outsider. They both have a lot to lose—not only their hearts but if they aren’t careful ... their lives as well.
