Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greene County: 1803-1908 No one could be more conscious of the shortcomings of this book than the Committee which has labored to prepare it. It is perhaps inevitable that with so large a subject and so short a time for preparing the material many things should be omitted that might properly have found place, and certain sections and interests suffer in comparison with others. We can but regret that this is so. We may at least take satisfaction in the thought that the book is thoroughly a Greene County product. The contributors are all residents or ex-residents who have written specially for this purpose, and all of the artistic and mechanical work has been done in the county with the single exception of the engraving. The photographs, except when taken by members of the Committee, have been credited as far as possible to their makers. While it is hoped that the book will more than pay expenses, the object in preparing it has been, not to make money for the Home Coming, but to produce at a modest price a lasting memento of what promises to be a most interesting event in the history of the county - the first general return of former residents. The historical sketch of the county embodies much original work, yet it is necessarily based on the older histories, the debt to which is herewith gratefully acknowledged. Acknowledgments should also be made to the large number of persons who have assisted the Committee, either as contributors or as representatives or in other ways. The hearty response met with in most cases where help was sought will be one of the pleasantest memories of our labors. Book excerpt: Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory, warned friends in Congress that the frontier settlers of Ohio were too indigent and ignorant to form a constitution and government for themselves. This is the story of the men who proved him wrong. The author describes the beginning of Ohio through the lives of its founding fathers. Founding fathers include the thirty-five delegates to the convention held in Chillicothe in November, 1802, which decided that Ohio should become a state and then drafted its first constitution, as well as twenty additional men whose activities before and after the convention round out the story of the state's beginning. Revolutionary War veterans, Indian fighters, eastern aristocrats, Appalachian mountain men, and immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, and England combined their talents to lay the foundation for one of the greatest states in the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ohio’s small towns have great stories. Little Ohio presents 100 of the state’s tiniest towns and most miniature villages. With populations under 500, these charming and unique locations dot the entire state—from Lake Seneca in the Northwest corner to Neville, bordering the Ohio River and the state of Kentucky. Little Ohio even ventures into Lake Erie, telling the story of Put-in-Bay. The selected locations help readers to appreciate the broader history of small-town life in Ohio. Yet each featured town boasts a distinct narrative, as unique as the citizens who call these places home. Some villages offer hundreds of years of history, such as Tarlton, laid out before Ohio had even gained statehood. Others were built with more expedience, such as Yankee Lake, a town that was incorporated simply so its founder could host dances on Sundays without breaking state law. With full-color photographs, fun facts, and fascinating details about every locale, it’s almost as if you’re walking down Main Street, waving hello to folks who know you by name. These residents are innovators, hard workers, and—most of all—good neighbors. They’re people who have piled into small school houses to wait out roaring flood waters, rebuilt after disastrous fires took their homes, and captured bandits straight out of the Wild West. Little Ohio, written by lifelong resident Kieran Robertson, is for anyone who grew up in a small town and for everyone who takes pride in being called an Ohioan. It’s one book with one hundred places to love.
