Book Synopsis The Greek Philosophers by : W.K.C. Guthrie
Download or read book The Greek Philosophers written by W.K.C. Guthrie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.K.C. Guthrie has written a survey of the great age of Greek philosophy - from Thales to Aristotle - which combines comprehensiveness with brevity. Without pre-supposing a knowledge of Greek or the Classics, he sets out to explain the ideas of Plato and Aristotle in the light of their predecessors rather than their successors, and to describe the characteristic features of the Greek way of thinking and outlook on the world. Thus The Greek Philosophers provides excellent background material for the general reader - as well as providing a firm basis for specialist studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Philosophy: Thales to Plato It is unfortunate in some respects that I have been obliged to deal with certain parts of the subject in a form which does not admit of detailed argument and still less of controversy. The second edition of my Early Greek Philosophy (referred to as E. Gr. Ph.2) makes this in large measure unnecessary in Book I but there are certain parts of Book III. Where I have had to state my conclusions baldly in the hope that I may have a later opportunity of discussing their grounds. My chief aim for the present has been to assist students who wish to acquire a firsthand knowledge of what Plato actually says in the dialogues of his maturity. So long as they are content to know something of the Republic and the earlier dialogues, Platonism must be a sealed book to them. Download or read book Ancient Greek Philosophy 2/e written by Vijay Tankha and published by Pearson Education India. This book was released on 2014 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the principal fragments of the early Greek thinkers like Anaximander, Heraclitus, Pythagoras, Parmenides and many others, who predate Plato and Aristotle. The author contends that pre-Platonic Greek philosophy is not to be looked at as a matter of mere historical interest. Although their work survives only in fragments, they have been the subject of study and reflection by the whole western philosophical tradition. Therefore the second edition of Ancient Greek Philosophy: Thales to Socrates covers the gamut of western thought from the pre-Socratic to the Socratic in order to provide us with an in-depth introduction to the whole of classical Greek philosophy.
