Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coins of Magna Graecia: The Coinage of the Greek Colonies of Southern Italy The works hitherto published on Greek Coins have been written by experts, and therefore it may seem fitting that some apology should be offered by one who, not being of that number, yet ventures to publish a work on this subject. The author Offers this volume in the hope of supplying those who have but few books and little knowledge of the Classics with some help in the study of the Hellenic art and thought connected with coin-types. The coins issued from the Greek cities of Southern Italy may be used as a means of introducing some readers to a new world full of life, beauty, and suggestive thought, the realm of Greek imagination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of Greek Coins Soon after the manuscript of this catalogue had reached the printer's hands Mr. Clarence S. Bement, the owner of the coins here described, became very ill and now for many months has been unable to carry further whatever plans he may have had for the development of his already splendid collection of antique coins. This interruption is most unfortunate, considering his achievements in other fields, for Mr. Bement has long been prominent in a small group of Americans who find relaxation from their occupations in the pursuit of some branch of art or science and devote no inconsiderable amount of time, money, and industry to the collection of material illustrative of the subjects that claim their interest. Their enthusiasm and their collections have done much to develop our libraries, museums, art galleries, and other agents of public education. Mr. Bement's interest in books and prints resulted in the forma tion of one of the noted private libraries of the country. This library was disposed of several years ago, some of the fine volumes passing through the hands of the late Mr. Harry Widener to Harvard Universi ty, while many rare prints went into the possession of a distinguished Philadelphia jurist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italo-Greek Coins of Southern Italy One of the great advantages offered by the study of this series of Italian coins is the attainment of a clear perception ofthe relation ship of the Roman coinage to that of ancient Greece. Many students of Roman coins neglect the literature connected With Greek coinage and thus miss the pleasure of tracing the steps by which the Roman coinage was evolved from that of the more ancient and artistic civilization of Greece. In this somewhat neglected corner of the numismatic field the student will not only find problems Still unsolved but also many side lights which help to make more clear a somewhat dark and difficult page of history. To students and collectors whose means are limited this series offers the further advantage of a large number of coins which cost little money, and are easily obtained moreover it is in connection with the types of the common coins that some of these interesting problems arise. And the relation between the Greek and Roman series may best be illustrated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Greek Coins of Ionia The only specimen without the lion which has been included among the coins of Miletus is figured on pl. Iii. 3. The attribution rests on the ground of the general resemblance of the reverse to those of nos. 5 and 6 of the same plate. For the rest, this particular specimen might equally well be attributed to Sardes. From its specific gravity, which is only it seems to consist almost entirely of silver, the proportions being, silver 98 per cent., gold 2 per cent. But from its yellow tint as compared with pure silver it is possible that it may contain a larger proportion of gold than is indicated by its specific gravity, the above calculation of the gold percentage being based upon the assumption that the coin consists of gold and silver only. The weight of the coin, grs., is that of the Lydian silver staters of the age of Croesus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
