Book excerpt: The greed of some men knows no limits, nor does the vengeance of those wronged by it. That night was pitch black. If there was a moon, it stayed well hidden behind the high clouds. Being so dark made it impossible for me to have even a small fire. The light from it could and might be seen for many miles on a night like this. That along with the smell of wood smoke would draw them right to me. I knew at least four men, maybe more, trailed me at this very time. I knew not if they were lawmen or gun hands hired by Douglas. Either one would mean the end of me and justice for my brothers. I sat in a hollow place in a hillside. Sat because it wasn't big enough to stretch out my six foot frame in any direction. How did it come to this I wondered, but I knew the answer all too well. GREED!

Book excerpt: In the grimy slums of Charlotte, North Carolina, two reputed rival drug lords find themselves obsessed with a beautiful, seductive and very pregnant exotic dancer named China, who's also a mistress of deception. Both men, armed and dangerous with extensive histories of violent criminal behavior, discover themselves virtual slaves to their uninhibited lust for the sheer pleasures China gives them. Slugs begin to fly when Raven seeks to unleash his jealous rage upon his sworn adversary, the passionate and charming fugitive Lamont King, for unsuspectingly moving in on his extremely profitable drug turf with a much higher quality of dope. Driven by greed and unable to obstruct Lamont's meteoric rise to power in the drug trade, Raven brings in the help of his gangbangin' cousin and his crew from Memphis's notorious LeMoyne Garden housing projects to settle the score. Meanwhile, Lamont develops a close-knit bond with China's crack-addicted father Irvin, and during the blood-letting and struggle for power, money and China's heart, unexpected circumstances arise that land both Lamont and Irvin in one of the most dangerous and barbaric-like federal penitentiaries in the entire U.S. for an armed bank robbery that they didn't even commit. The direct appeals are timely filed, but will they make it out of prison? And if so, dead or alive? If alive, vengeance is definitely in order.

Psychologist Michael McCullough argues that the key to a more forgiving, less vengeful world is to understand the evolutionary forces that gave rise to these intimately human instincts and the social forces that activate them in human minds today. Drawing on exciting breakthroughs from the social and biological sciences, McCullough dispenses surprising and practical advice for making the world a more forgiving place. Michael E. McCullough (Miami, Florida), an internationally recognized expert on forgiveness and revenge, is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where he directs the Laboratory for Social and Clinical Psychology.

Book excerpt: The Cruelty is an action-packed young adult thriller (optioned for film by Jerry Bruckheimer) about a girl who must train as an assassin to deal with the gangsters who have kidnapped her father. Gwendolyn's father kept his life a secret from her. When he goes missing, she's plunged into a world of assassins, spies, and criminal masterminds. When Gwendolyn Bloom’s father vanishes, she sets off on a journey she never bargained for. Traveling under a new identity, she uncovers a disturbing truth: to bring her father back alive, she must become every bit as cruel as the men holding him captive. This suspensful debut from Scott Bergstrom features a strong female character and nonstop, cinematic action. Praise for The Cruelty: "Liam Neeson’s 2008 film Taken concerned a spy who engages in mass mayhem while attempting to recover his kidnapped daughter. Bergstrom reverses this plot in his violent, well-crafted first novel. Seventeen-year-old gymnast Gwendolyn Bloom doesn’t learn that her father is a genuine spy?and not merely an overworked State Department employee?until after he is kidnapped by international gangsters, and the CIA makes little attempt to recover him . . . A grim, fast- paced tale." —Publishers Weekly "[T]his debut novel is relentlessly paced, full of global sets, slick action...with a grim, ass-kicking antihero." —Booklist The Cruelty is a nominee for the 2018 Edgar Award for best Young Adult book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Haunting Fetus focuses on the belief in modern Taiwan that an aborted fetus can return to haunt its family. Although the topic has been researched in Japan and commented on in the Taiwanese press, it has not been studied systematically in relation to Taiwan in either English or Chinese. This fascinating study looks at a range of topics pertaining to the belief in haunting fetuses, including abortion, sexuality, the changing nature of familial power structures, the economy, and traditional and modern views of the spirit world in Taiwan and in traditional Chinese thought. It addresses the mental, moral, and psychological aspects of abortion within the context of modernization processes and how these ramify through historical epistemologies and folk traditions. The author illustrates how images of fetus-ghosts are often used to manipulate women, either through fear or guilt, into paying exorbitant sums of money for appeasement. He argues at the same time, however, that although appeasement can be expensive, it provides important psychological comfort to women who have had abortions as well as a much-needed means to project personal and familial feelings of transgression onto a safely displaced object. In addition to bringing to the surface underlying tensions within a family, appeasing fetus-ghosts, like other dealings with supernatural beings in Chinese religions, allows for atonement through economic avenues. The paradox in which fetus-ghost appeasement simultaneously exploits and assists evinces the true complexity of the issue--and of religious and gender studies as a whole.
