Book excerpt: Throughout history, different cultural traditions, all of them with considerable linguistic diversity, have flourished and converged in the Mediterranean and Near Eastern regions. The International Conference of Junior Researchers in Mediterranean and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures provided a transverse and interdisciplinary framework of discussion and reflection on the intellectual and cultural production of the Mediterranean and the Near East, from its earliest stages to the present. This book is the result of the analysis of the different political, religious and social trends of thought, material culture, and artistic, literary and linguistic expressions brought together in this geographical area, highlighting the scope of this blend of traditions within different space-time surroundings.
Book Synopsis Books of the Brave by : Irving A. Leonard
Download or read book Books of the Brave written by Irving A. Leonard and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original appearance in 1949, Irving A. Leonard's pioneering Books of the Brave has endured as the classic account of the introduction of literary culture to the Spanish New World. Leonard's study documents the works of fiction that accompanied and followed the conquistadores to the Americas and argues that popular texts influenced these men and shaped the way they thought and wrote about their experiences. UC Press's 1992 edition combines Leonard's text with a selection of the documents that were his most valuable sources—nine lists of books destined for the Indies. Containing a wealth of information, these lists provide the documentary evidence for what is perhaps Leonard's greatest contribution: his demonstration that royal and inquisitorial prohibitions failed to control the circulation of books and ideas in colonial Spanish America. Rolena Adorno's introduction reaffirms the lasting value of Books of the Brave and chronicles developments in cultural-historical studies that have shed light on the role of books in Spanish American colonial culture. Adorno situates Leonard's work at the threshold between older, triumphalist views of Spanish conquest history and more recent perspectives engendered by studies of native American peoples. With its rich descriptions of the book trade in both Spain and America, Books of the Brave has much to offer historians as well as literary critics. Indeed, it is a highly readable and engaging book for anyone interested in the cultural life of the New World. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1992.

Book Synopsis A Generation of Spanish Poets 1920-1936 by : C. B. Morris
Download or read book A Generation of Spanish Poets 1920-1936 written by C. B. Morris and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1969-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical study of the group of remarkably talented poets who flourished in Spain between the First World War and the Spanish Civil War includes copious quotations accompanied by English prose translations. Mr Morris treats his poets as a group, showing how they shared certain themes and attitudes. He begins with a general study of the generation as a whole and then examines the use of tradition; the zest and levity of the Jazz Age; the exaltation of life as a shared attitude; then its converse; the escape from life; and finally the expression in complex imagery of personal tensions and disturbances. These are often 'difficult' poets, but become less so when they are sympathetically examined in this way and in relation to earlier literary traditions. Mr Morris enables the reader to take bearings and establish relationships which are enhanced by reproductions of photographs of the poets.

Book Synopsis Margaret Tyler, 'Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood' by : Joyce Boro
Download or read book Margaret Tyler, 'Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood' written by Joyce Boro and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Tyler's Mirror of Princely Deeds and Knighthood is a groundbreaking work, being the first English romance penned by a woman and the first English romance to be translated directly from Spanish. As such it is not only a landmark in the history of Anglo-Spanish literary relations, but it is also a milestone in the evolution of the romance genre and in the development of women's writing in England. Yet notwithstanding its seminal status, this is the only critical edition of Tyler's romance. This modernized edition is preceded by an introduction which meticulously investigates Tyler's translation methodology, her biography, her proto-feminism, and her religious affiliations. In addition, it situates Mirror within the context of English romance production and reading, female authorship, and the Elizabethan and Jacobean translation of Spanish romance. This edition will be of interest to scholars of gender studies and of English and Spanish Renaissance literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Early Printed Narrative Literature in Western Europe by : Bart Besamusca
Download or read book Early Printed Narrative Literature in Western Europe written by Bart Besamusca and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume are concerned with early printed narrative texts in Western Europe. The aim of this book is to consider to what extent the shift from hand-written to printed books left its mark on narrative literature in a number of vernacular languages. Did the advent of printing bring about changes in the corpus of narrative texts when compared with the corpus extant in manuscript copies? Did narrative texts that already existed in manuscript form undergo significant modifications when they began to be printed? How did this crucial media development affect the nature of these narratives? Which strategies did early printers develop to make their texts commercially attractive? Which social classes were the target audiences for their editions? Around half of the articles focus on developments in the history of early printed narrative texts, others discuss publication strategies. This book provides an impetus for cross-linguistic research. It invites scholars from various disciplines to get involved in an international conversation about fifteenth- and sixteenth-century narrative literature.
