Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admired for its elaborate breeding displays and treasured as a game bird, the Greater Sage-Grouse is a charismatic symbol of the broad open spaces in western North America. Unfortunately these birds have declined across much of their range—which stretches across 11 western states and reaches into Canada—mostly due to loss of critical sagebrush habitat. Today the Greater Sage-Grouse is at the center of a complex conservation challenge. This multifaceted volume, an important foundation for developing conservation strategies and actions, provides a comprehensive synthesis of scientific information on the biology and ecology of the Greater Sage-Grouse. Bringing together the experience of thirty-eight researchers, it describes the bird’s population trends, its sagebrush habitat, and potential limitations to conservation, including the effects of rangeland fire, climate change, invasive plants, disease, and land uses such as energy development, grazing, and agriculture.

Book excerpt: "Our general objective is to identify a set of short-run (three to five years) policy alternatives that are based on a synthesis of empirical research into the needs of the greater sage-grouse(Centrocercus urophasianus) and its relationship to the sagebrush system. In other words, based on what we know from research, we try to identify the best set of policy alternatives for maintaining and increasing sage-grouse populations on public lands that policy makers could implement and expect some results within a three- to five-year time frame"--Page 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) is one of the most cherished and reviled laws ever passed. It mandates protection and preservation of all the nation’s species and biodiversity, whatever the cost. It has been a lightning rod for controversy and conflicts between industry/business and environmentalists. The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of this law, and provides an opportunity for a measured and thorough evaluation thereof. We cannot know today’s challenges and opportunities without understanding their histories. This book is the most comprehensive history of the ESA ever published, and the first to consider the entire history of the law from all angles in a single volume. The history of the ESA has been one of increasing impact, complexity, and controversy. In 1978, the Supreme Court declared that Congress intended for the U.S. government to save all species at any cost, and thereafter application of the ESA became steadily more controversial, as seen in the example of the northern spotted owl and the timber wars in the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s and early 90s, and then everywhere as the ESA became a political football in the highly partisan environment of the late 1990s and amendments to the law ceased. This book is not only a history, but a call to action. It will take more conservation, more funding, and more innovative solutions if we are to save our wildlife and biodiversity. It will take the engagement to every American to muster the collective will to meet this challenge. The hope of this book is that we will be able to look back and say that we accomplished more in the second 50 years of the ESA than we did in the first.

Book excerpt: Richly illustrated with photographs by award-winning nature photographer Noppadol Paothong, and accompanied by the text of accomplished natural history writer Kathy Love, this book tells the story of the sage-grouse, its habitat in the vast Sagebrush Sea of the Intermountain West, and the threats faced by both. Although the sage-grouse once flourished in many Western US states and provinces of Canada, in the past century its populations have diminished drastically. Today, fewer than 400,000 sage-grouse remain, and conservative legislation challenging the preservation of public wild lands increasingly threatens the sage- grouse. This book is designed not only to build awareness on the issues threatening the sage-grouse, but to stimulate and inspire readers to join the fight for environmental conservation and wilderness preservation. Bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, and residents of the American West will delight in viewing the beauty of the sage-grouse and emerge with a deeper sense of the many interests affecting the sagebrush ecosystem and the conservation efforts being implemented. This book is one of the most visually stunning and comprehensive documentations of one of the most iconic species of the United States, great for Bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, students, and residents of the American West.

Book excerpt: This document serves as guidance on managing, restoring and enhancing sagebrush habitat on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This guidance only applies until BLM State or local-level guidance is developed, or until specific sage-grouse conservation measures are incorporated into BLM land use plans. In July 2000, the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Forest Service (FS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and BLM. This MOU established state wildlife agencies as the lead for state and local conservation planning efforts for sage-grouse. In July 2002, WAFWA approved a proposal to develop a Conservation Assessment (CA) for sage-grouse and sage-grouse habitat to be completed in two distinct phases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous federal and state agencies, research institutions and stakeholders have undertaken tremendous conservation and research efforts across 11 States in the western United States to reduce threats to Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and sagebrush (Artemisia spp) habitats. In 2010, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) determined that the Greater Sage-Grouse was warranted for protection under the Endangered Species Act, but that action was precluded by higher priority listing actions. As part of a 2011 court settlement, USFWS agreed to make an initial determination on whether to propose the species for listing by September 30, 2015 fiscal year. The Draft FY 2015 Omnibus Appropriations Bill contains a rider that currently prevents USFWS from publishing a proposed listing rule regarding greater sage-grouse, but it does not relieve USFWS of its obligation to determine whether the species still warrants protection under the ESA. Consequently, USFWS is moving forward with a determination by the end of 2015. The Service also found that the bi-state population of Greater Sage-Grouse bordering California and Nevada, considered a distinct population segment (DPS), also warranted protection as a threatened species under ESA (Federal Register 2013).

Book excerpt: INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES Invasive Alien Species: Observations and Issues from Around the World Volume 1: Issues and Invasions in Africa Invasive alien species are spreading into new ecosystems each year. The impacts caused by these invaders can be swift and devastating. The topic of invasive alien species is large, complex, and globally significant at various scales, exacerbated by the globalization of world economies and increased trade and commerce that has overcome natural barriers to species movement. Invasive alien species threaten global food supplies, water quality and availability, and energy production and delivery. With the added risks associated with global climate change, the global homogenization of plants, animals, and microbes is a major factor in the decline in ecosystem health and ecosystem services worldwide. To counter this trend, there is a critical need to unify governments, cultures, and programs to improve cross-boundary coordination to effectively address the wide range of invasive alien species threats to the environment, economies, and to plant and animal health; particularly human health. This 4-volume work is the first to compile a set of useful material for key topics, to provide a better understanding of the overall global threat of invasive alien species and the diverse array of problems faced around the world, and assemble material that includes potential replicable solutions to overcome these threats. The books also highlight the threat posed by invasive alien species in terms of a global ‘call to action’. Since invasive species know no boundaries, it is our hope that by compiling material from different scientific and social perspectives around the world, and sharing knowledge and examples of a diverse array of associated topics, we can advance global awareness and improve unified national responses to the threat posed by invasive alien species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Independent Press Award - Conservation/Green, 2021 The only hope for successful conservation of America’s threatened, endangered, and at-risk wildlife is through voluntary, cooperative partnerships that focus on private land, where over 75% of at-risk species can be found. Private landowners form the bedrock of these partnerships, and they have a long history of rising to meet the challenge of conservation. But they can’t do it alone. This book is a guide for private landowners who want to conserve wildlife. Whether engaged in farming, ranching, forestry, mining, energy development, or another business, private working lands all have value as wildlife habitat, with the proper management and financial support. This book provides landowners and their partners with a roadmap to achieve conservation compatible with their financial and personal goals. This book introduces the art and language of land management planning as well as regulatory compliance with laws such as the Endangered Species Act of 1973. It categorizes and explains the tools used by wildlife professionals to implement conservation on private lands. Moreover it documents the multitude of federal, state, local, and private opportunities for landowners to find financial and technical assistance in managing wildlife, from working with a local NGO to accessing the $6 billion per year available through the federal Farm Bill.

Book excerpt: Next Generation INDIE Book Awards Grand Prize Winner, Best Non-Fiction Book in 2017; and Winner in the Science/Nature/Environment category Finalist for Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards in Ecology and Environment In this book, Lowell E. Baier, one of America’s preeminent experts on environmental litigation, chronicles the century-long story of Americas’ resources management, focusing on litigations, citizen suit provisions, and attorneys’ fees. He provides the first book-length comprehensive examination of the little-known Equal Access to Justice Act (EAJA) and its role in environmental litigation. Originally intended to support veterans, the disabled and small business, EAJA, Baier argues, now paralyzes America’s public land management agencies. Baier introduces readers to the history of EAJA, examines the many beneficiaries of the law, describes in depth 20 of the most prominent litigious environmental groups in America, and recommends carefully tailored amendments to the EAJA to correct environmental abuses of the law while protecting legitimate interests. Inside the Equal Access to Justice Act will be a valuable resource for the environmental legal community, environmentalists, practitioners at all levels of government, and all readers interested in environmental policy and the rise of the administrative state.
