Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hartford area has a rich history of firefighting, beginning with the bucket brigades of early colonial history. As devastating blazes razed many key buildings and entire neighborhoods, these small teams developed into large volunteer groups. The city finally realized that paid fire departments were needed, and the modern firefighting world bloomed with technological advances in equipment and procedures. The evolution of these brave firefighting groups is richly chronicled in Greater Hartford Firefighting.

Book excerpt: When John Stewart joined the Hartford Fire Department in 1952 he was only the seventh African-American firefighter in the department's 150-year history. He made the grand total of $48.50 a week. Stewart faced deep-seated institutional racism, unofficial but widespread segregation tactics, and resentment. For years he was passed over for promotions despite his sterling service. Stewart persevered and eventually the promotions came. He became the first black officer in the department, and, in 1980, became Hartford, Connecticut's first African-American fire chief. Hard Climb up the Ladder chronicles Chief Stewart's determination and eventual success, from his early years through decades of service to his city. In addition to his firefighting career, Stewart became an elected city council official to help the poor and racial minorities of Hartford access city services. An inspiration to those who know him, Chief John B. Stewart Jr. (ret.) proves hard work and perseverance can overcome bigotry and the status quo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through firsthand accounts, interviews with survivors and a gripping collection of vintage photographs, author Michael Skidgell attempts to make sense of one of Hartford's worst tragedies. Almost 7,000 fans eagerly packed into the Ringling Brothers big top on July 6, 1944. With a single careless act, an afternoon at the "Greatest Show on Earth" quickly became one of terror and tragedy as the paraffin-coated circus tent caught fire. Panicked crowds rushed for the few exits, but in minutes, the tent collapsed on those still struggling to escape below. A total of 168 lives were lost, many of them children, with many more injured and forever scarred by the events. Hartford and the surrounding communities reeled in the aftermath as investigators searched for the source of the fire and the responsible parties.

Book excerpt: The history of the New Haven Fire Department dates back to December 29, 1789, when Mayor Roger Sherman, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, formed the volunteer system. The advent of steam fire engines in 1862 marked the end of the volunteer system and the beginning of the full-time paid department, giving New Haven the distinction of having the first professional fire department in Connecticut. New Haven has a long and proud history of tradition in its fire service. Since 1862 there have been only fifteen different chiefs heading the department. New Haven Firefighters tells the story from the days of steamers to the era of the tower ladder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Springfield Fire Department dates back to 1792 when the first hand pumper, Lion, was purchased. On January 24, 1794, a fire club with 50 members, all prominent citizens of the city, was organized. Fire districts were established in 1830 by an act passed by the Massachusetts legislature. By 1833, Springfield officially organized a fire department, and like the fire club, the new volunteer department consisted of prominent members of the community. The fire department changed from volunteer to paid in 1872. The volunteers then formed the Springfield Veteran Firemans Association. After 1872, the department made great strides, especially in the area of apparatus. In 1906, Springfield entered the motorized age with the introduction of a Knox squad truck, and by 1916, Springfield became the first fullymotorized fire department in the United States.

Each core principle is examined with relevant on-the-job stories to bring lessons home. Fire departments must constantly train their firefighters and officers in these core principles if they want them to be safe and effective at structure fires. Training is the foundation of all the other core principles, and must be realistic, scenario-based, and hands-on. Never stop learning during your time as a structural firefighter. If you come to a point where you mistakenly believe that you know everything there is to know about fires in and around buildings–watch out–because you have just fallen into the complacency trap. FEATURES --Gain a deeper understanding of how firefighters should approach fires in buildings, with an emphasis on safety and effectiveness --See the latest research from UL and NIST on fire behavior and flow paths, with a discussion of best-practices and up-to-date tactical advice. --An essential, easy-to-read fundamental resource on how to safely and effectively fight fires in buildings of any size or type. “Fire Under Control is a riveting new book that allows you to learn while also seeing how street experiences coincide with printed tactical and scientific fire service information. I always have said that eyes, ears, and experience will equal your education in the fire service and Capt. Steve Bernocco has managed to bring it to light.” -- Lt. Mike Ciampo, Fire Department of New York
