Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shocking murder of railroad laborers in nineteenth-century Pennsylvania—and the centuries-long coverup that followed—is revealed in this true crime history. In June 1832, railroad contractor Philip Duffy hired fifty-seven Irish immigrant laborers to work on Pennsylvania's Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad. They were sent to a stretch of track in rural Chester County known as Duffy's Cut. Six weeks later, all of them were dead. For more than 180 years, the railroad maintained that cholera was to blame and kept the historical record under lock and key. In a harrowing modern-day excavation of their mass grave, a group of academics and volunteers found evidence some of the laborers were murdered. Authors and research leaders Dr. William E. Watson and Dr. J. Francis Watson reveal the tragedy, mystery, and discovery of what really happened at Duffy's Cut.

Book excerpt: The Alsatian Bieber/Beaver clan has contributed significantly to the creation and leadership of over sixty educational and Mainline Protestant institutions in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, the Midwest, and beyond - many of which continue to serve their communities, generation after generation. Past publications have mentioned individual Bieber/Beaver ministers and educators, but this is the first effort to compile their stories collectively, from the 1700’s to the present. This work recognizes such leaders’ roles in building and sustaining churches and schools, the community centers of early America. Book Synopsis An American Family by : Ralph F. Warner
Download or read book An American Family written by Ralph F. Warner and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Family is about the Warner family of Philadelphia's Blockley Township. R. David Warner Sr., the author, is qualified to write this book because he and his father are the twelfth and thirteenth generation of a family which settled on the shores of the Schuylkill River five years before William Penn laid out the city. Before his death in 1992, the author's father wrote a series of letters containing the stories told to him as a child in the early twentieth century. He researched the public records of both the Historical Societies and the Quaker Meetinghouse to build upon the actual accounts of his family members. He spent the last twenty years of his life collecting this historical information. In the mid-nineteenth century, the author's great-grandfather began building on the names and facts about family members. The information he gathered was also used to write this book. Actual letters written from the foxholes of the civil war are typical of the documents used to complete this book. Our past can only be retrieved from what we remember and from the historical records that have been kept. Without memories and without records, we have no personal history!
