Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 14, 1945, Alfred Eisenstaedt took a picture of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, minutes after they heard of Japan’s surrender to the United States. Two weeks later LIFE magazine published that image. It became one of the most famous WWII photographs in history (and the most celebrated photograph ever published in the world’s dominant photo-journal), a cherished reminder of what it felt like for the war to finally be over. Everyone who saw the picture wanted to know more about the nurse and sailor, but Eisenstaedt had no information and a search for the mysterious couple’s identity took on a dimension of its own. In 1979 Eisenstaedt thought he had found the long lost nurse. And as far as almost everyone could determine, he had. For the next thirty years Edith Shain was known as the woman in the photo of V-J Day, 1945, Times Square. In 1980 LIFE attempted to determine the sailor’s identity. Many aging warriors stepped forward with claims, and experts weighed in to support one candidate over another. Chaos ensued. For almost two decades Lawrence Verria and George Galdorisi were intrigued by the controversy surrounding the identity of the two principals in Eisenstaedt’s most famous photograph and collected evidence that began to shed light on this mystery. Unraveling years of misinformation and controversy, their findings propelled one claimant’s case far ahead of the others and, at the same time, dethroned the supposed kissed nurse when another candidate’s claim proved more credible. With this book, the authors solve the 67-year-old mystery by providing irrefutable proof to identify the couple in Eisenstaedt’s photo. It is the first time the whole truth behind the celebrated picture has been revealed. The authors also bring to light the couple’s and the photographer’s brushes with death that nearly prevented their famous spontaneous Times Square meeting in the first place. The sailor, part of Bull Halsey’s famous task force, survived the deadly typhoon that took the lives of hundreds of other sailors. The nurse, an Austrian Jew who lost her mother and father in the Holocaust, barely managed to escape to the United States. Eisenstaedt, a World War I German soldier, was nearly killed at Flanders.

Book excerpt: Powerful, visceral, and essential to preserving and understanding our past, the work of Associated Press photographers and journalists lives on through the pages of World War II.Never before in history had the day-to-day struggles and victories of war-from the homefront to the front lines-been chronicled in such graphic and unflagging detail as during the Second World War. Book excerpt: It was the war to end all wars, a conflict without precedent in which millions perished and it was also one of the first conflagrations captured comprehensively in photographs. These carefully selected images capture World War One in all its haunting detail. From the mud of Flanders to the beaches of Gallipoli, all the great battles, all the theaters of operations, and all the nationalities involved are commemorated. It's an intensely moving testament to the patriotism and innocence of the men and women who volunteered, the bloody reality of trench warfare on the Western Front, the terror of gas and mechanized weaponry, the sea battles around the globe, and the ultimate sacrifice of a generation. Divided year by year, each chapter opens with a comprehensive overview of the main events and developments."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The faces in photographs of World War II-both the famous pictures from Life magazine and the seldom-seen snapshots of individual soldiers, sailors, and correspondents-have a unique capacity to induce awe, respect, and wonder. Who were these men and women? Did they survive the war? And, if so, what were their lives like? Author and Vietnam-era veteran David P. Colley has been researching the subjects of World War II photographs for more than twenty years. As he explains, "I find the pursuit of the soldiers in World War II photographs illuminating. We never stop and ask about the toll of war or what happened to the men afterward. Many were killed or wounded or suffered deep psychological scars. The year 2015 marks the seventieth anniversary of the end of that war. It will undoubtedly be one of the last times this nation honors its living World War II veterans. Soon they will be no more and the war mostly forgotten. It already is ancient history to the majority of Americans. But the images of those veterans, depicted in photographs, bring alive those momentous years and enshrine the soldiers in our history and our imaginations." In Seeing the War, Colley revisits more than a hundred of the most revealing photographs of World War II.

Book excerpt: The follow-up to Faces of World War I, this photographic journey is testament to the 100 million military men and women, and many more civilians, whose lives were so profoundly affected by the catastrophic war of 1939-1945. Faces of World War II pays tribute to all who fought and died, and won and lost for greater human rights and freedom. Structured by year, the book includes images of the major events from Blitzkrieg to the Battle of Britain, from the invasion of Poland to Pearl Harbor. With over 17 million people perishing during the course of the conflict, brutality, suffering and slaughter are inevitably shown, and these pictures take their place alongside poignant and uplifting scenes of civilians, nurses and doctors fighting their own battles, and the endless task of clearing the battlefields and the brief moments of respite. This book remarkably captures the reality of war: the suffering, the toil and the hopelessness, as well as the mundane aspects of a world turned upside down in those seven fateful years. From enforced confinement to trench warfare and mechanization, Faces Of World War II shows every aspect of this very modern war, in images that will inform, shock, move, but always engage.
