Book excerpt: GREAT PASHTU SUFI & WARRIOR MASTER POETS OF AFGHANISTAN An Anthology Translation & Introduction Paul SmithThe Pashtu language is the native language of the indigenous Pashtun people who are found primarily between an area south of the Amu Darya in Afghanistan and west of the Indus River in Pakistan. The origin of Pashtu language and the Pashtun tribes is unknown. The word 'Pashtu' derives by regular phonological processes from 'Parsaw' or 'Persian'. Nonetheless, the Pashtuns are sometimes compared with the Pakhta tribes mentioned in the Rigveda (1700-1100 BC). During the 17th century Pashtu poetry was becoming very popular among the Pashtuns. Some of those who wrote Poetry in Pashtu are Pir Roshan, Mirza Khan Ansari, Khushal Khan Khattak, Rahman Baba and Ahmad Shah Durrani founder of the modern state of Afghanistan or the Afghan Empire. CONTENTS: The Pashtu Language, Pashtu Sufi Poetry, Sufis & Dervishes: Their Art & Use of Poetry. THE POETS: Mirza, Khushal (the largest section), Ashraf Khan, Abdul-Kadir, Rahman Baba, Khwaja Mohammad, Hamid, Ahmad Shah and Shaida. The correct forms and meanings of the ghazal, ruba'i & others have been kept for these beautiful, powerful & often spiritual poems. Lives & 'further reading' on each poet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an anthology of English translations of Pushto poets from the 16th century on. Most, if not all, of these poets are Sufi. They utilize the poetic vocabulary of Sufiism: the tavern, the wine, the flowers, etc., all actually technical terms describing the soul's progression on the mystical path towards God. Raverty's introductory essay, Remarks on the Mystic Doctrine and Poetry of the Sufis provides a skeleton key to the symbology. Most of the writers included here were, in addition to being Sufi poets, tribal leaders, men of action, in many cases related in some fashion. For instance, the prolific Khushhal Khan fathered Ashraf Khan and Abd-ul-Kadir Khan, all very formidable poets and warriors. Their poetry reflects a tribal, patriarchal society (women don't normally appear in these texts except as the 'beloved, ' or a target of scorn). However, this is not the bleak, bigoted, art and music starved world of the Taliban. It is clear that not all of that Sufi joie de vivre is metaphorical, and many of the verses display a wicked sense of humor. The descriptions of nature are realistic, and their love of country is fierce. --Forgotten Books.

Book excerpt: "This book provides the first ever overview of the history and development of Islam in Afghanistan. It covers every era from the conversion of Afghanistan through the medieval and early modern periods to the present day. Based on primary sources in Arabic, Persian, Pashto, Urdu and Uzbek, its depth and scope of coverage is unrivalled by any existing publication on Afghanistan. As well as state-sponsored religion, the chapters cover such issues as the rise of Sufism, Sharia, women's religiosity, transnational Islamism and the Taliban. Islam has been one of the most influential social and political forces in Afghan history. Providing idioms and organizations for both anti-state and anti-foreign mobilization, Islam has proven to be a vital socio-political resource in modern Afghanistan. Even as it has been deployed as the national cement of a multi-ethnic 'Emirate' and then 'Islamic Republic,' Islam has been no less a destabilizing force in dividing Afghan society. Yet despite the universal scholarly recognition of the centrality of Islam to Afghan history, its developmental trajectories have received relatively little sustained attention outside monographs and essays devoted to particular moments or movements. To help develop a more comprehensive, comparative and developmental picture of Afghanistan's Islam from the eighth century to the present, this edited volume brings together specialists on different periods, regions and languages. Each chapter forms a case study 'snapshot' of the Islamic beliefs, practices, institutions and authorities of a particular time and place in Afghanistan"--Provided by publishe
