Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Christian Church The delay which has taken place in the appearance of this work has afforded many opportunities of learning how much this deficiency was appreciated by competent scholars in England and America. From the letters we have received, and from public journals, we might present many testimonies, not only that such a work was needed, but that nothing in the literature of the present day waq so likely to supply the deficiency as a transla tion of the work we had announced. The style of our author is especially adapted to the anglo-saxon mind; his astonishing power of condensed expression - his mathetic, if not religious sym pathics, with every variety of intellectual and moral greatness, his skilful daguerreotypes of characters by means of the trans mitted light of contemporary language, - the delicate irony and genial humor which pervade his descriptions, - the picturesque liveliness with which a single character or incident brings out the manners and spirit of an age, - the precision with which his scientific arrangement is preserved, the critical judgment with which the minutest results of recent investigations are ia troduced, -and the graceful proportion and animation with which the whole stands out before us, render his history attractive to all kinds of readers. He throws away every name or event which has no historical utility or organic life he appreciates an heroic spirit wherever it appears, and each period is estimated as nearly as possible in its own light. His is not merely a history of the hierarchy, of the nobility, or of great men, but of the Church. His descriptions, therefore, embrace especially traits of common life, the progress of the arts, and indications of advancement in social freedom. If his theological Opinions do not quite coincide with our own, he seldom, at least in this work, obtrudes them upon our attention. His object seems to have been to maintain historical accuracy, rather than to exhibit his own opinions and if sometimes our favorite characters, or views, do not appear in the light in which we have usually contemplated them, his uni form immrtiality and intelligence make us suspect our earlier judgments. N one but those who observe the structure rather than the particular dogmatic expressions of this work, will berunsm'ron's ensues. He knows that it is due to the church more than to any other institution that he has come to know and to love Jesus Christ. He knows that the church is constantly working to bring the knowledge and love of God to men and to promote his kingdom throughout the world. He also knows that in it he often finds the very best place in which to do his own work for the advancement of the kingdom. He is himself a member of it. Because he is thus vitally con cerned with the life of the church, this little book has been written to help him to understand how the Christian church came to be and just how it has developed through the nineteen centuries of its history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Living Pulpit of the Christian Church Christian people to which he belongs, and his brethren will prize it because so many precious hours were drawn from his slender stock of time and strength in order to give it to the church. Dr. William T. Moore has lived a long, useful life and though now far beyond man's allotted time on earth, in many ways his mind is as eager about the great questions of the church as when he first passed through the gates of youth. He has studied the best things and never failed to urge the for ward look and the widest Christian brotherhood. His passion has been to serve. May we not infer from the fact of this book that he believes preaching to be the supreme work of the church? And seeing the place Christ gave it, is it not the greatest work in the world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tributes of Great Men to Jesus Christ: Compiled and Edited It was neither idle curiosity nor personal vanity which prompted our Lord and Master to ask His disciples this important question. He well knew that the success of His Kingdom depended, in a great measure, upon what men believed and said concerning His personality. What was true in the days of His flesh is true today. What men have said and are still say ing of the Christ is not only a matter of intel lectual interest to the world but also of vital importance to the kingdom of God. For two thousand years Jesus Christ has been the one central character of human his tory. It would be strange indeed if we did not wish to know what the great men in every age of the world's history thought and said of Him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Commission: Or the Christian Church Constituted and Charged to Convey the Gospel to the World To the mind of the Christian philanthropist no subject can possess a deeper interest than the state and prospects of the world in relation to the gospel of Christ; its state, as presenting, in the middle of the nineteenth century of the Christian era, so painfully mysterious an extent of ignorance, ungodliness, and misery; its prospects, as assured, by the promises of the God of truth and mercy, of an approaching period of universal knowledge, love, purity, and happiness. Estimating the value of means by the value of the end to which they are subservient, the subject of missions to the heathen, for the subversion of false religions by the diffusion and divine power of the true, cannot fail to hold a place preeminently high, in the minds of all who fear God, love the Savior, and desire the good of their race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Great Men HE who has been enabled to see, even dimly, a world of Beauty and of Joy which his brethren do not seem to see, and to feel heaven - descended influences which his brethren do not seem to feel, - such an one cannot be happy to enjoy these things alone. To live in luxury while his brother is dying of want, to enjoy the light while those around him, though having eyes as he, yet see not, - there is no resting-place here for the ear nest Christian Man. So spake, in 1840, the revered frederic myers, when inaugurating plans he had formed for the spiritual education of his Parish. These words reveal the animating Spirit of his noble efforts, of which these Lectures are remains. He lived as one who felt that his Master's mission was his, to go about teaching truth and doing good. The works of a man's love are his works indeed, and of these Lectures it may be emphatically affirmed, they were the works of the Author's love. His heart glows in every page, witnessing his vivid sympathy with the subject of his discourse. He wrought out the strong conviction he felt, that the Clergyman of a Parish should be its Educator, as well as Spiritual Guide - that the vast portion of most men's time allowed to run to waste. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Christian Life The publisher of this volume has been anxiously desirous to promote, by such means as his position might place in his power, the habit of reading for direct religious edification. He has believed that, both in the private chamber and in the family circle, especially when any are deprived, wholly or partially, of the privileges of the sanctuary, no other books will quite supply the place of printed sermons; and he has regretted that, in our country, so few volumes of this class are offered to the public. In the hope that the taste of thoughtful persons may not be yet at settled variance with what was formerly esteemed so favourable to the growth of individual and domestic piety, he determined to enter on the publication of several volumes from living preachers of the Church, if their consent could be obtained, and if the first results of the enterprise should not be mere discouragements.
