Book excerpt: "The physical and legal problems of delineating Great Lakes shorelines are analyzed. Traditional "ordinary high-water marks" are determined by reference to biologic and geologic indicators. The authors propose that Wisconsin define the jurisdictional boundaries by high-water elevations defived from long-term records of water levels."--Page 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average annual water level on Lake Michigan rose 0.8 m between 1967 and 1973 causing adjustments in nearshore processes and topography. Assuming 2 mm/yr as a typical rate for sea level rise, it would take 400 years to observe similar adjustments on an ocean beach. The rapid rise in average water level is one of several features that makes the Great Lakes useful for testing concepts of shore response to sea level changes. The key assumption in the Bruun concept of response to sea level rise is that the same average beach profile is reestablished relative to the higher water elevation. This assumption was confirmed by detailed measurements over a 9-year period of 25 beach and offshore profile transects along 50 km of Lake Michigan shoreline. Complete profile adjustment lagged 3 years behind the water level change. A simple equation was developed expanding Brunn's concept to account for (a) gains and losses of sediment from causes other than the water level variation, (b) erosion of different size sediments in the receding shoreface, not all of which would be stable in the shore zone, and (c) accretion of beach material during falling water levels. The expanded Bruun sediment balance approach reduces the problem of estimating long-term shore response to sea level rise to the simpler problem of determining an appropriate closure depth for the responding profile. In the Great Lakes, this closure depth can be estimated as about twice the 5-year-return-period wave height for the site under consideration.

Book excerpt: In conjunction with the Great Lakes connecting channels and harbors study, this report examines the potential damage to the shore and shore structures due to an increase in vessel size. The areas considered in this report are the United States shorelines along the St. Marys, St. Clair and Detroit rivers. The potential for shoreline or shore structure damage due to an increase in vessel size was reviewed on both a conceptual and site-specific basis. Ship-induced waves were ruled out as a damage mechanism since the analysis showed that the contemplated increases in vessel size would not significantly affect wave heights in the nearshore zone. Propeller wash was discounted for similar reasons. Ship-induced drawdown was determined to be the major potential damage mechanism. While larger ships potentially produce more damage, this potential is significant only in severely restricted channel sections for the size increase considered here. By far the most significant factor in ship-related damage potential is vessel speed. In almost all areas, the effect of an increase in vessel size could be eliminated by a reduction in vessel speed of 1-2 mph. (Author). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource.
