Book excerpt: "The following Thesis attempts a brief survey of four exploratory parties, with the object of demonstration that each exemplifies the chosen definition of an Explorer as one who improves on the geographical, anthropological, and sometimes the scientific knowledge of the society to which it belongs, by virtue of an extended journey (called an Expedition or Voyage in the text) through regions thitherto either unknown, or ill-documented by that society; and then, who achieves an heroic character in the zeitgeist therof, by the publication and dissemination of a memoir (sometimes called a Travelogue, but more usually an account) of its journey. To that end, if offers synopses and significant points of the explorers' accounts, and a brief analysis of each and all; and in particular, a closer comparison of two explorers, Marco Polo and ibn Battuta al-Lawati al Tanj, whose expeditions appear conducted on parallel lines. Toward the conclusion of this Thesis, the tentative hypothesis is made that publication and dissemination chiefly establish the explorers' heroic character.
