Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Epochs in American History, Vol. 2 of 10: Described by Famous Writers From Columbus to Roosevelt Of the French settlements the chief was New Orleans, French from the beginning, and so to remain in racial preponderance, religious beliefs, and political ideals, for a century and a half after Bienville founded it - so, in fact, it still re mains in our day. But elsewhere the French gave to the United States no permanent settle ments. Numbers of them came to Florida, only to perish by the sword; others in large numbers settled in South Carolina, only to become merged with other races, among whom the English, with their speech and their laws, became supreme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Epochs in American History, Vol. 3 of 10: Described by Famous Writers From Columbus to Roosevelt As the Spaniards had been first to explore and possess the regions bordering on the Gulf of Mexico and extending across the Southwest to the Pacific, so, in the next generation, were the French first to grasp the imperial domain watered by the Mississippi and many of its tributaries. By what steps this territory was wrested by the English from the French, as the Atlantic seaboard had been snatched by England from Spain; by what other steps, English colonists established on that seaboard, wrested from the mother country that more imperial domain bounded by the Atlantic, the Mississippi, the Gulf and Great Lakes, constitute the story embraced in the third of these great epochs in American history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Epochs in American History, Vol. 8 of 10: Described by Famous Writers From Columbus to Roosevelt (The Election of Lincoln and the Civil War) The election of Lincoln was a triumph for many political elements which, before his ascendency, had been groping blindly toward similar ends - some of these old-time Whigs, others new-time Abolitionists, some Free Soil men, others Union Democrats, still others Anti-Nebraska men; but all eager for the salvation of the Union and now marching under a common banner as Republicans. For the Union cause there was a great majority in the Electoral College; it marked a general uprising, for that cause, and was tempered only by Lincoln's failure to secure a popular majority. He was nearly a million short of a majority over all. To the Southern States Lincoln's election came with the force of an appalling calamity. No longer did their leaders see any peaceable legislative way out of the country's wearisome intestinal strife. All the forces with which they had ever contended were now united against them, and victorious in their unity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Epochs in American History, Vol. 6 of 10: Described by Famous Writers From Columbus to Roosevelt Jackson was first elected President in 1828, but the period in our history so closely associated with his name virtually began four years earlier, when Adams, with fewer electoral votes, secured the office. This large vote for Jackson in 1824 and his splendid triumph in 1828 testified in the strongest way to the great change that had come over the country since the War of 1812. The building of roads and canals, and the use of steam for navigation on great rivers and lakes, had opened up the western country until it acquired great national importance. It was this western country that gave to Jackson his preponderance over Adams in 1824, and made easy his election in 1828. Moreover, it was this section which in 1832 greatly helped to secure for Jackson his 154 electoral votes and a popular majority of 157,000. A new era had, in fact, dawned upon the whole country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Epochs in American History, Vol. 7 of 10: Described by Famous Writers From Columbus to Roosevelt Exactly twenty years had now gone by since the Missouri Compromise became a law. That famous instrument for promoting tranquillity between the North and South had been followed by internal peace as to slavery; but it has quite another distinction for services rendered to the Republic. More to it than to any other cause is probably due that long period of national repose in which undisturbed were ushered in western expansion, new and more expeditious transportation methods, manufacturing enterprises, the sewing-machine, the rotary printing-press, and machine implements for farming. Coincident with these movements new problems of great peril to the peace of the States were soon to arise. Satisfied as the South had been with the Missouri Compromise when passed, it learned eventually that in the workings of the compromise the North was the chief gainer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Epochs in American History, Vol. 4 of 10: Described by Famous Writers From Columbus to Roosevelt Another great difficulty was the failure of the States to agree upon a common policy in commer cial matters. Tariff laws of their own were made and thus they waged commercial war on one an other. At one time four States - Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia, in direct violation of the Articles of Confederation, began to raise troops for their own defenses. Rhode Island, in 1786, recalled her delegates to Congress and refused to appoint others. Shay's rebellion of 1786, in western Massachusetts, was a rebellion against paying debts, and a conspicuous symptom of the discontent of the times. Europe, hearing of these disorders, believed the Union would not long keep itself together. George III thought the States would soon beg England to take them back. The whole country was on the verge of civil war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Great Epochs in American History, Described by Famous Writers from Columbus to Wilson, is an editorial work by American journalist and historian Francis W. Halsey. The aim has been to present striking accounts of periods in the history of the United States, from the landing of Columbus to the building of the foundation of the first colonies. In large part, events are described by men who participated in them, or were personal eye-witnesses of them. These accounts are often supplemented by passages from the writings of historians and biographers. First Volume deals with voyages of Discovery and early explorations from around 1000 A.D. to 1682. Second Volume II deals with the planting of the first colonies in the period from 1562 to 1733.
