Book excerpt: Einstein's theory of general relativity and quantum mechanics were among the most startling discoveries in the 20th century. Based on these theories, the maximum mass of a non-rotating non-magnetized white dwarf was found to be about 1.4 solar mass, known as the Chandrasekhar mass-limit. However, over the past decades, various researchers have indirectly predicted many sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting mass white dwarfs (white dwarfs which violate the Chandrasekhar mass-limit) from the luminosity based observations of peculiar type Ia supernovae. Several research groups worldwide, earlier proposed different models, including magnetic fields, rotation, modified gravity, noncommutative geometry, and many more, to explain these peculiar white dwarfs. However, no such white dwarfs have so far been observed directly in any observations and hence to predict the correct theory for white dwarfs is still unclear. In this book, we show that if such white dwarfs rotate in such a way that their magnetic field and rotation axes are not aligned with each other, they can emit continuous gravitational radiation, which in the future, various detectors, such as LISA, TianQin, BBO, DECIGO, Einstein Telescope, etc., can detect with a significant signal-to-noise ratio. Thereby one can predict the structure of the white dwarfs and single out the correct theory of gravity. In the related context of modified gravity, we show that even in vacuum, asymptotically flat solution of the modified Einstein equation is possible. All these results argue that the premise of modified theory of gravity seems to be an excellent platform to explain unsolved astronomical problems.

In Part I, we briefly review fundamental theories of gravity, performed experimental tests, and gravitational waves. The framework and the methods that we use in our calculations are discussed in Part II. This part includes reviewing the methods of the Parametrized Post-Newtonian (PPN) framework, Direct Integration of Relaxed Einstein Equations (DIRE), and Matched Filtering. In Part III, we calculate the explicit equations of motion for non-spinning compact objects (neutron stars or black holes) to 2.5 post-Newtonian order, or O(v/c)5 beyond Newtonian gravity, in a general class of alternative theories to general relativity known as scalar-tensor theories. For the conservative part of the motion, we obtain the two-body Lagrangian and conserved energy and momentum through second post-Newtonian order. We find the contributions to gravitational radiation reaction to 1.5 post-Newtonian and 2.5 post-Newtonian orders, the former corresponding to the effects of dipole gravitational radiation. For binary black holes we show that the motion through 2.5 post-Newtonian order is observationally identical to that predicted by general relativity. In Part IV, we construct a parametrized dispersion relation that can produce a range of predictions of alternative theories of gravity for violations of Lorentz invariance in gravitation, and investigate their impact on the propagation of gravitational waves. We show how such corrections map to the waveform observable by a gravitational-wave detector, and to the "parametrized post-Einsteinian framework", proposed to model a range of deviations from General Relativity. Given a gravitational-wave detection, the lack of evidence for such corrections could then be used to place a constraint on Lorentz violation.

Binary systems are the most promising sources of gravitational waves that are expected to be detected with the current ground-based and upcoming space-based gravitational wave detectors. During the merger of binary compact objects, an important stage is the plunge. A small part of the gravitational waveform, it marks the end of early inspiral and determines the quasinormal ringing (QNR) of the final product of the merger. It is also the part of the waveform where most of the gravitational energy is released. But, unlike early inspiral and late ringdown, it is poorly understood in terms of phenomenology. This thesis introduces a novel approach combining the Fourier domain Green's function in the particle perturbation approximation and a simple model to understand this crucial stage. The resulting understanding is successful in explaining QNR for a Schwarzschild black hole and opens a new approach to understanding binary inspiral. It holds the promise of a much improved understanding, and improved efficiency in making astrophysical estimates of gravitational wave source strength. Singularities are known to be the ultimate fate of all massive stars undergoing gravitational collapse. The cosmic censorship hypothesis predicts that all these singularities are generically covered by event horizons, i.e., all collapsing stars, if they result in a singularity, end up as black holes. Although several theoretical examples of non-hidden (naked) singularities have been found, the question of the genericity of naked singularities is far from settled. This thesis presents a study of the causal structure of spherically symmetric models of dust collapse and its perturbations to investigate the genericity of naked singularities.
