Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PATRIMONIAL STATE AND GRASSROOTS DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA. Patrimonialism combines congrously with other modes of state-society relations, particularly ethnicity and incorporation to influence virtually every political process in Nigeria irrespective of the regime in power. This powerful combination engenders political ills such as personalization of political institutions, distribution of patronage in exchange for political support, tempestuous struggle to control state power, and corruption generally. The result is political instability, which hampers democracy generally and grassroots democracy in particular.

Book excerpt: Successive Nigerian administrations' economic record has been so lamentable in meeting people's basic needs, that many ordinary Nigerians have taken matters into their own hands and got down to the work of local development themselves, largely bypassing government in the process. As this book shows, whatever hope there is for a better future rests with the courageous efforts of ordinary people in their communities. Apart from throwing light on this important, but little-known, dimension of Nigerian life, this book also raises a number of fundamental questions: What chance has popular participation in a conflict-ridden and divided society? And what relationship is there between popular participation, democracy and development?

This book was released on 2024-04-11 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 4 (B), Obafemi Awolowo University (Faculty of Administration), course: Local Government and Development Studies, language: English, abstract: This study examines the effects of empowerment programmes on grassroots development and governmental intervention in Osun State, Nigeria. The study examined the effects of empowerment programmes among the people of Osun from 2010-2020. It also identifies the challenges in the implementation of various policies and programmes for grassroots development in Osun State. The study utilized primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data were sourced through the administration of questionnaire and personal interviews. Secondary data were collected from relevant journals, books, government publications. Frequency tables were used to analyze the data collected. The sample size of this study was one hundred and fifty. The findings showed that the rate of improvement is agreed, when the basic problems of people are solved as a result of the creation of local government and the closeness of grassroots authorities to the people promotes democracy. However, the study discovered that lack of qualified politicians, excessive politicking at the local level, corruption, lack of community participation in the development process, misplaced priorities, poor revenue base of local government, and dearth of high skilled manpower, and lack of autonomy are the challenges confronting grassroots development and governmental intervention in Osun State, Nigeria. The study concludes that the task of grassroots development most especially in Nigeria's fourth republic cannot be achieved by one section of the society. The effort of the government alone cannot solve all the problems, nor can the people solely achieve any level of success. The success, therefore, depends on the combined efforts of the two agents that are; the government and the people who are domiciled at the grassroots.
