Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced perennial pasture grasses provided the mainstay for the animal industries in the temperate high-rainfall region of Australia. Together with native grasses and introduced legumes, they are essential for sustainable animal production and assist in the amelioration of soil acidity, soil structure and water balance. This book is the result of the First National Perennial Grass Workshop which was held in October 1993 and involved representatives from State Departments of Agriculture and Primary Industries, CSIRO, NZ AgResearch, universities, major seed companies, rural industry research corporations and primary producers. The programme comprised invited reviews covering the major introduced species and native perennial grasses. This material was originally published in New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research 37 (3) 1994.

This 1994 edition of Australian Vegetation reviews the vegetation of the continent as a whole. In the introductory section, chapters on phytogeography, vegetation history and alien plants set the scene for further sections covering all the major vegetation types. The plant life of extreme Australian habitats is also discussed, and the book closes with a chapter on the conservation of Australian vegetation. Each chapter, written by experts on each particular habitat type, will inform and stimulate the interests of students and professional botanists, especially those fortunate enough to see for themselves the unique vegetation and flora of Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s varied grasslands have suffered massive losses and changes since European settlement, and those changes continue under increasingly intensive human pressures for development and agricultural production. The values of native grasslands for conservation of endemic native biodiversity, both flora and fauna, have led to strong interests in the protection of remaining fragments, especially near urban centres, and documentation of the insects and other inhabitants of grasslands spanning tropical to cool temperate parts of the country. Attention to conservation of grassland insects in Australia is relatively recent, but it is increasingly apparent that grasslands harbour many localised and ecologically specialised endemic species. Their conservation necessarily advances from very incomplete documentation, and draws heavily on lessons from the far better-documented grasslands elsewhere, most notably in the northern hemisphere, and undertaken over far longer periods. From those cases, and the extensive background to grassland management to harmonise conservation with production and amenity values through honing use of processes such as grazing, mowing and fire, the needs and priorities for Australia can become clearer, together with needs for grassland restoration at a variety of scales. This book is a broad overview of conservation needs of grassland insects in Australia, drawing on the background provided elsewhere in the world on the responses to disturbances, and the ecological importance, of some key insect groups (notably Orthoptera, Hemiptera and Lepidoptera) to suggest how insect conservation in native, pastoral and urban grasslands may be advanced. The substantial references given for each chapter facilitate entry for non-entomologist grassland managers and stewards to appreciate the diversity and importance of Australia’s grassland insects, their vulnerabilities to changes, and the possibilities for conserving them and the wider ecological roles in which they participate.

Book excerpt: "This field guide begins with some simple explanations of the botanical terms inescapable in describing plants. Its organization does not follow the formal layout of the definitive Floras of the region. Plants are not arranged in their families but are listed in alphabetical order of scientific name. It is to this extent self-indexing. However, an index of common plant names is included so that those who only know a plant by one of these names, can locate it and confirm its description."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Fire is pivotal to the functioning of ecosystems in Australia, affecting the distribution and abundance of the continent's unique and highly diverse range of plants and animals. Conservation of this natural biodiversity therefore requires a good understanding of scientific processes involved in the action of fire on the landscape. This book provides an up-to-date synthesis of current knowledge in this area and its application in contemporary land management. Central to the discussion is an exploration of the concept of the fire regime and its interactions with biodiversity.
