Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grappling with Gravity explores the physiological changes that will occur in humans and the plants and animals that accompany humans as we move to new worlds, be it to colony in the emptiness of space or settlements on the Moon, Mars, or other moons or planets. This book focuses on the biomedical aspects, while not ignoring other life-changing influences of space living. For example, what happens to people physiologically in the microgravity of space, where weight and the direction "up" become meaningless? Adapting to microgravity represents the greatest environmental challenge that life will have encountered since our ancestors moved from the seas to solid Earth. Away from Earth the human body will begin almost immediately to adapt and change, to be able to function in these strange environments. As a person adapts in space he or she will become less fit to live on Earth.

It offers an absorbing account on the history of research on the universe and gravity from Aristotle via Copernicus via Newton to Einstein. The author possesses high literary qualities and is celebrated relativist. The physics of black holes constitutes one of the most fascinating chapters in modern science. At the same time, there is a fanciful quality associated with this strange and beautiful entity. The black hole story is undoubtedly an adventure through physics, philosophy, history, fiction and fantasy. This book is an attempt to blend all these elements together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new understanding of society’s relations with the cosmos. Entrepreneurs such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk receive a great deal of publicity, but offer unlikely and implausible visions of space tourism for the general public. Meanwhile, asteroids are seen as ‘rare materials’ which will be extracted and used to produce untold riches for earthbound citizens. The reality is rather different. First, there is no evidence that owners of capital are attempting to extract ‘rare’ materials in the cosmos. The costs would be ‘out of this world’. But capital, not governments, is determining how outer space should be used. Capital’s investments in aerospace companies are actively determining forms of military interventions and the equipment used. And satellite television pumps out forms of culture aimed at a global audience. But these are being ignored and subverted by, for example, indigenous peoples. In short, this book sets out a new understanding of our relations with the cosmos. The forces of capital are certainly powerful but at the same time they are being challenged, subverted and even overturned.

Eventually their play transforms into real skills of potentially lethal efficiency. Humans have done the same. In this anthology, you will find unique combative techniques found in some cultures as well as some techniques that are universal. Allen Pittman gives a portrayal of Dr. Tim Geoghegan’s particular blend of Eastern and Western wrestling, and his formidable arsenal for grappling and throwing. In anther chapter, Pittman focuses on the shoulder throw. The technical variations seem endless for this valued movement. Steve Scott illustrates the cross-body armlock according to skills he hopes will give readers a better understanding and mastery of this armlock. His following chapter shows a rare Russian technique. Known as the Kharbarelli Pick-up, it is a good example of how different cultures and their unique grappling traditions have been adopted outside their original location. The chapter on the carotid choke is presented from the perspectives of a martial arts instructor and that of a physician. The application, effects, and ramifications of drug usage and mental state are discussed in detail. Tim Cartmell explains the key concepts of “sticking and following” as they apply to throwing methods found in Chinese xingyi, taiji and bagua. The concepts are explained and illustrated with examples of sample techniques. David Allen’s writes on the Mongolian Nadaam Festival. Athletes from all over the country assemble to compete in horse racing, archery, and wrestling. Mongolian wrestling is probably the least watched martial art in the world. The author’s photo exposé brings the festival to us. The chapter by Burdick, Wolske and Daneshagar gives us a rare view into the Persian grappling tradition. Iran’s national sport is the strength training system found in the “house of strength,” where bodybuilders and wrestlers are steeped in both Zarathrushran and Islamic traditions. The following chapter by Zhang Yun is on the throwing art of Shuai Jiao. It includes: history and development, analysis of fighting principles, details of hand and footwork, body movement, training methods, training equipment, relationship with other Chinese styles, and demonstrations of applications. The final article focuses on sumo with some parallels being drawn between sumo and mixed martial arts. Techniques and tactics are presented so readers might add some of these sumo moves to their own martial arts repertoire.

Have you ever wondered what comets are and why astronomers spend so much time studying them? Now, a comet expert and an astronomical historian have come together to produce the unique book that you now hold in your hands. Using their several decades of teaching experience, the authors have concisely presented the information you need to comprehend these majestic apparitions that grace our night skies. No mathematical proficiency is needed, in fact, this book doesn't contain a single equation! Comets are cosmic Rosetta stones, bridging our current knowledge by digging back to the earliest days of our Solar Systems. How did life arise on Earth? Did comets play a significant role in bringing water and the necessary organic matter to our early Earth? How about the dinosaurs? Were they driven to extinction by a cometary impact 66 million years ago? Comets may be both the enablers and destroyers of life on Earth as we know it. These are some of the tantalizing questions discussed here. If you so desire, steps are given to join the ranks of amateur comet hunters. Astronomy is one of the last sciences where amateurs play a significant role. Your reward for discovery? A comet officially bearing your name in the history books! The next Great Comet is on its way, we just do not know when it will arrive. Armed with this book, you will be ready to enjoy this unforgettable event.
