Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graphics and Structural Design This text is intended for the author's classes in General Engineering Design in Sibley College, Cornell University. The treatment of the subject has been kept as general as possible and is that used for his students during the past four or five years. The problems chosen for discussion are those on the border line between Civil and Mechanical Engineering. To the general designer knowledge of this subject is indispensable while acquaintance with the methods used in determining the stresses in, and the subsequent designing of, structures is of the greatest benefit to others in all designing for strength whether of machines or structures. Although the book is called "Graphics and Structural Design" the determination of the stresses has not been confined to graphical means; the other usual methods have been included. The design of a plate girder may seem out of keeping with the purpose of the book. The author formerly used a crane runway girder instead of the railway bridge, but decided that the railway girders made the more comprehensive and better problem. The design of the latter permitted the use of the moment table and acquainted the student with the usual method of treating locomotive and train loads. Incidentally, one who could design a railway plate girder was well prepared to design a runway girder, although the reverse was not so generally true. The author's practice is to use a set of problems paralleling the drawing-room work, to assign a number of these problems each week to the students upon which they recite. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphic methods for structural design essentially translate problems of algebra into geometric representations, allowing solutions to be reached using geometric construction (ie: drawing pictures) instead of tedious and error-prone arithmetic. This was the common method before the invention of calculators and computers, but had been largely abandoned in the last half century in favor of numerical techniques. However, in recent years the convenience and ease of graphic statics has made a comeback in architecture and engineering. Several professors have begun using graphic statics in the classroom.and.studio environment. But until now, there had been no guidebook that rapidly brings students up to speed on the fundamentals of how to create graphical solutions to statics problems.Graphic Statics introduces all of the traditional graphic statics techniques in a parametric drawing format, using the free program GeoGebra. Then, advanced topics such as indeterminate beams and three dimensional curved surfaces are be covered. Along the way, links to wider design ideas are introduced in a succinct summary of the steps needed to create elegant solutions to many staticequilibrium problems.Meant for students in civil and architectural engineering, architecture, and construction, this practical introduction will also be useful to professionals looking to add the power of graphic statics to their work.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The development of graphic based preliminary design programs is appealing because preliminary design involves the consideration of alternatives as concepts or sketches. The use of such a program would allow engineering students and new graduates to gain experience directly, through their own trial and error. This paper describes a graph based preliminary design program that was developed to facilitate teaching architect and engineering students about structural design."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphic Design for Architects is a handbook of techniques, explanations and examples of graphic design most relevant to architects. The book covers a variety of scales of graphic design, everything from portfolio design and competition boards, to signage and building super-graphics – to address every phase of architectural production. This book combines and expands on information typically found in graphic design, information design, and architectural graphics books. As architectural communication increases to include more territory and components of a project, it is important for designers to be knowledgeable about the various ways in which to communicate visually. For instance, signage should be designed as part of the process – not something added at the end of a project; and the portfolio is a manifestation of how the designer works, not just an application to sell a design sensibility. In thinking about architecture as a systematic and visual project, the graphic design techniques outlined in this book will help architects process, organize and structure their work through the lens of visual communication. Each chapter is titled and organized by common architectural modes of communication and production. The chapters speak to architects by directly addressing projects and topics relevant to their work, while the information inside each chapter presents graphic design methods to achieve the architects’ work. In this way, readers don’t have to search through graphic design books to figure out what’s relevant to them – this book provides a complete reference of graphic techniques and methods most useful to architects in getting their work done.
