Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a new mathematical field grew and matured in America Graph Theory in America focuses on the development of graph theory in North America from 1876 to 1976. At the beginning of this period, James Joseph Sylvester, perhaps the finest mathematician in the English-speaking world, took up his appointment as the first professor of mathematics at the Johns Hopkins University, where his inaugural lecture outlined connections between graph theory, algebra, and chemistry—shortly after, he introduced the word graph in our modern sense. A hundred years later, in 1976, graph theory witnessed the solution of the long-standing four color problem by Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken of the University of Illinois. Tracing graph theory’s trajectory across its first century, this book looks at influential figures in the field, both familiar and less known. Whereas many of the featured mathematicians spent their entire careers working on problems in graph theory, a few such as Hassler Whitney started there and then moved to work in other areas. Others, such as C. S. Peirce, Oswald Veblen, and George Birkhoff, made excursions into graph theory while continuing their focus elsewhere. Between the main chapters, the book provides short contextual interludes, describing how the American university system developed and how graph theory was progressing in Europe. Brief summaries of specific publications that influenced the subject’s development are also included. Graph Theory in America tells how a remarkable area of mathematics landed on American soil, took root, and flourished.

Book excerpt: Graph theory is a fascinating and inviting branch of mathematics. Many problems are easy to state and have natural visual representations, inviting exploration by new students and professional mathematicians. The goal of this textbook is to present the fundamentals of graph theory to a wide range of readers. The book contains many significant recent results in graph theory, presented using up-to-date notation. The author included the shortest, most elegant, most intuitive proofs for modern and classic results while frequently presenting them in new ways. Major topics are introduced with practi.

This elegant book has provided students and teachers with an excellent introduction to the field of graph theory for close to thirty years. Robin Wilson's revision adds strength to the book by updating the terminology and notation, bringing them in line with contemporary usage. Wilson has added new material on interval graphs, the traveling salesman problem, bracing frameworks, shortest route problems, and coloring maps on surfaces. Most of the diagrams in the book have been redrawn.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Graphs and Algorithms, held in 1987 at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The purpose of the conference was to foster communication between computer scientists and mathematicians, for recent work in graph theory and related algorithms has relied on increasingly sophisticated mathematics. Wagner's Conjecture, self-adjusting data structures, graph isomorphism, and various embedding and labelling problems in VLSI are examples of the kinds of questions now facing the field. With around 65 participants, the conference brought out the depth and diversity of current research in this area. The wide range of topics covered in this volume demonstrates the vitality of the activity in both mathematics and computer science and captures the diversity and excitement of the conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ten years since the publication of the best-selling first edition, more than 1,000 graph theory papers have been published each year. Reflecting these advances, Handbook of Graph Theory, Second Edition provides comprehensive coverage of the main topics in pure and applied graph theory. This second edition—over 400 pages longer than its predecessor—incorporates 14 new sections. Each chapter includes lists of essential definitions and facts, accompanied by examples, tables, remarks, and, in some cases, conjectures and open problems. A bibliography at the end of each chapter provides an extensive guide to the research literature and pointers to monographs. In addition, a glossary is included in each chapter as well as at the end of each section. This edition also contains notes regarding terminology and notation. With 34 new contributors, this handbook is the most comprehensive single-source guide to graph theory. It emphasizes quick accessibility to topics for non-experts and enables easy cross-referencing among chapters.

The SEICCGTC is broadly considered to be a trendsetter for other conferences around the world – many of the ideas and themes first discussed at it have subsequently been explored at other conferences and symposia. The conference has been held annually since 1970, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Boca Raton, Florida. Over the years, it has grown to become the major annual conference in its fields, and plays a major role in disseminating results and in fostering collaborative work. This volume is intended for the community of pure and applied mathematicians, in academia, industry and government, working in combinatorics and graph theory, as well as related areas of computer science and the interactions among these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithmic graph theory has been expanding at an extremely rapid rate since the middle of the twentieth century, in parallel with the growth of computer science and the accompanying utilization of computers, where efficient algorithms have been a prime goal. This book presents material on developments on graph algorithms and related concepts that will be of value to both mathematicians and computer scientists, at a level suitable for graduate students, researchers and instructors. The fifteen expository chapters, written by acknowledged international experts on their subjects, focus on the application of algorithms to solve particular problems. All chapters were carefully edited to enhance readability and standardize the chapter structure as well as the terminology and notation. The editors provide basic background material in graph theory, and a chapter written by the book's Academic Consultant, Martin Charles Golumbic (University of Haifa, Israel), provides background material on algorithms as connected with graph theory.
