Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1,2,3-trichloropropane (1,2,3-TCP) is a carcinogenic pesticide impurity and solvent/degreaser. It was detected in 251 active public wells in California from 2002 to 2012. 1,2,3-TCP is resistant to many conventional treatment methods and has a groundwater half-life of 1-2 years. Granular activated carbon adsorption is an effective treatment method, but meeting the proposed public health goal of 0.7 ng/L will be costly, necessitating treatment optimization. Five granular activated carbons were compared for 1,2,3-TCP removal via batch rate experiments, isotherms, and two rapid small scale column tests (RSSCTs). The RSSCT breakthrough curves were compared to predictions from the Homogeneous Surface Diffusion Model (HSDM) at small and projected full-scale operation with the assumption that diffusion was proportional to particle size. The HSDM predicted much longer operation times prior to 5 ng/L breakthrough compared to the experimental data. For the first RSSCT, the order of greatest to least bed volumes treated prior to 5 ng/L breakthrough was: F400 > CMR Lincave > Aquacarb CX = OLC 12x40 > OLC 12x30. For the second RSSCT, the order of greatest to least bed volumes treated prior to 5 ng/L breakthrough was: F400 > CMR Lincave = Aquacarb CX > OLC 12x40 = OLC 12x30. The two RSSCTs were performed with approximately 200 ng/L TCP in groundwater. TOC in the second RSSCT, isotherms, and rate study was approximately four times higher than in the first RSSCT (1300 vs 327 ppb) due to algal growth. It is hypothesized that organic matter preloading occurred in the second RSSCT and contributed to a 35-77% decrease in operation time compared to the first RSSCT. High organic content probably also contributed to overestimation of operation time by the HSDM for four of the five activated carbons. Granular activated carbon appears to be a viable option for achieving the future public health goal, but organic matter can greatly decrease adsorption capacity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "emerging contaminants" and its multiple variants has come to refer to unregulated compounds discovered in the environment that are also found to represent a potential threat to human and ecological receptors. Such contaminants create unique and considerable challenges as the push to address them typically outpaces the understanding of their toxicity, their need for regulation, their occurrence, and techniques for treating the environmental media they affect. With these challenges in mind, this handbook serves as a primer regarding the topic of emerging contaminants, with current and practical information to help support the goal of protection where they are encountered. Features Explores the definition, identification, and life cycle of emerging contaminants. Reviews current information on sources, toxicology, regulation, and new tools for characterization and treatment of: 1,4-Dioxane (mature in its emerging contaminant life cycle) Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs; a newer group of emerging contaminant) Hexavalent chromium (former emerging contaminant with evolving science) 1,2,3-Trichloropropane (progressing in its emerging contaminant life cycle) Provides thoughts on opportunities in managing emerging contaminants to help balance uncertainty, compress life cycle, and optimize outcomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides comprehensive coverage of technologies which integrate adsorption and biological processes in water and wastewater treatment. The authors provide both an introduction to the topic as well as a detailed discussion of theoretical and practical considerations. After a review of the basics involved in the chemistry, biology and technology of integrated adsorption and biological removal, they discuss the setup of pilot- and full-scale treatment facilities, covering powdered as well as granular activated carbon. They elucidate the factors that influence the successful operation of integrated systems. Their discussion on integrated systems expands from the effects of environmental to the removal of various pollutants, to regeneration of activated carbon, and to the analysis of such systems in mathematical terms. The authors conclude with a look at future needs for research and develoment. A truly valuable resource for environmental engineers, environmental and water chemists, as well as professionals working in water and wastewater treatment.
