When his uncle went to the United States as a farm worker in 1960 and brought back Black liberation literature, he became enamored with “Black Power”. He got himself in trouble when he became bold enough to put his fist in the air and shouted for everyone to hear: “I am black and I am proud.” Why should people hate me for loving myself? But he lived in a very conservative rural community where all the women adored the Queen of England and all the men aspired to become English Gentlemen. Eventually, he got used to being treated harshly, became fearless and refused to cry out in pain. He would rub cow-itch (Mucuna pruriens) and scallion on his palm to deaden the skin whenever he thought he was to get a beating, but he was no longer afraid of pain. Unfortunately, he occasionally forgot that he was handling cow itch and inadvertently rubbed his eyes with his fingers or take out his penis to pea which lead to several hours of enormous suffering as washing with soap and water did not help. He was an erasable child, however, each time the people tried to subdue him, like a cork, he would surface again. As he was not getting along in the country, his mother arranged for him to live with her sister in Kingston. While he worked as a security guard, he was introduced to and came under the influence of Dr. Walter Rodney, a radical university professor. When both he and Dr. Rodney became “Persona non-grata” for their radical activities, they escaped to Cuba. Dr. Rodney subsequently went back to his homeland (Guyana) 1980 to run for political office and was assassinated. Garnett joined the Cuba Army and was sent by Fidel Castro to fight in the successful war for independence in Angola. As he was fighting against the South African Army, he had orders to kill all white men he encountered. He became a killing machine. He was personally thanked and honored by both Fidel Castro and the First President of a liberated Angola, Agostino Neto. Having returned to Jamaica, he became a successful husband, businessman and father to a dozen children by ten women while he was happily married. As he grew rich and older, however, he was diagnosed with diabetes and became blind. He became more mellow in his old age and repented his “bad boy” ways to become an influential and beloved leader, husband and father.

As they share their feelings about men, religion and racism, Susan sees her life in a new light and slowly opens her heart to Anita's brand of optimistic spirituality. The mirrored structures of both novellas tie them together.

Book excerpt: When Music Migrates uses rich material to examine the ways that music has crossed racial faultlines that have developed in the post-Second World War era as a consequence of the movement of previously colonized peoples to the countries that colonized them. This development, which can be thought of in terms of diaspora, can also be thought of as postmodern in that it reverses the modern flow which took colonizers, and sometimes settlers, from European countries to other places in the world. Stratton explores the concept of ’song careers’, referring to how a song is picked up and then transformed by being revisioned by different artists and in different cultural contexts. The idea of the song career extends the descriptive term ’cover’ in order to examine the transformations a song undergoes from artist to artist and cultural context to cultural context. Stratton focuses on the British faultline between the post-war African-Caribbean settlers and the white Britons. Central to the book is the question of identity. For example, how African-Caribbean people have constructed their identity in Britain can be considered through an examination of when ’Police on My Back’ was written and how it has been revisioned by Lethal Bizzle in its most recent iteration. At the same time, this song, written by the Guyanese migrant Eddy Grant for his mixed-race group The Equals, crossed the racial faultline when it was picked up by the punk-rock group, The Clash. Conversely, ’Johnny Reggae’, originally a pop-ska track written about a skinhead by Jonathan King and performed by a group of studio artists whom King named The Piglets, was revisioned by a Jamaican studio group called The Roosevelt Singers. After this, the character of Johnny Reggae takes on a life of his own and appears in tracks by Jamaican toasters as a Rastafarian. Johnny’s identity is, then, totally transformed. The root of Susan’s anger comes from knowing she’s struggling to find a man and men from all different walks of life are quicker to marry white women before the thought of a black woman crosses their mind. Anita drew a comparison to domestic work. As a college educated woman, she too, found it very difficult to find a job outside of domestic work and in her field of study. She finds herself asking “Is domestic work just for black people?” And it continues.
