Book excerpt: When H. Byron Earhart’s father enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, young Byron and his family moved into his grandparents' old-fashioned home with a coal-fired range and potbelly stove, and his mother took charge of the family business, a frozen food locker. Grandma was the undisputed head of the family. While his father served on the battleship USS Missouri, his grandparents and mother held the family and the business together. At Grandma’s House is a tribute to everyday Americans who provided the social glue for a country at war as they balanced fear and anxiety for loved ones with the challenges and pleasures of daily life. The experiences of the Earhart family and this Midwestern community, supplemented by contemporary documents, family photos, and professional illustrations, recount with vivid local color the drama that played out on the national and international stage.

Download or read book Granny D written by Doris Haddock and published by Villard. This book was released on 2001-06-12 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There's a cancer, and it's killing our democracy. A poor man has to sell his soul to get elected. I cry for this country." On February 29, 2000, ninety-year-old Doris “Granny D” Haddock completed her 3,200-mile, fourteen-month walk from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. She walked through 105-degree deserts and blinding blizzards, despite arthritis and emphysema. Along her way, her remarkable speeches — rich with wisdom, love, and political insight — transformed individuals and communities and jump-started a full-blown movement. She became a national heroine. On her journey, Haddock kept a diary — tracking the progress of her walk and recalling events in her life and the insights that have given her. Granny D celebrates an exuberant life of love, activism, and adventure — from writing one-woman feminist plays in the 1930s to stopping nuclear testing near an Eskimo fishing village in 1960 to Haddock’s current crusade. Threaded throughout is the spirit of her beloved hometown of Dublin/Peterborough, New Hampshire — Thornton Wilder’s inspirations for Grovers Croner in Out Town — a quintessentially American center of New England pluck, Yankee ingenuity and can-do attitude. Told in Doris Haddock’s distinct and unforgettable voice, Granny D will move, amuse, and inspire readers of all ages with its clarion message that one person can indeed make a difference.

Book Synopsis Grandma Gatewood's Walk by : Ben Montgomery
Download or read book Grandma Gatewood's Walk written by Ben Montgomery and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2014 National Outdoor Book Awards for History/Biography Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than two hundred dollars. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. And in September 1955, having survived a rattlesnake strike, two hurricanes, and a run-in with gangsters from Harlem, she stood atop Maine's Mount Katahdin. There she sang the first verse of "America, the Beautiful" and proclaimed, "I said I'll do it, and I've done it." Grandma Gatewood, as the reporters called her, became the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail alone, as well as the first person—man or woman—to walk it twice and three times. Gatewood became a hiking celebrity and appeared on TV and in the pages of Sports Illustrated. The public attention she brought to the little-known footpath was unprecedented. Her vocal criticism of the lousy, difficult stretches led to bolstered maintenance, and very likely saved the trail from extinction. Author Ben Montgomery was given unprecedented access to Gatewood's own diaries, trail journals, and correspondence, and interviewed surviving family members and those she met along her hike, all to answer the question so many asked: Why did she do it? The story of Grandma Gatewood will inspire readers of all ages by illustrating the full power of human spirit and determination. Even those who know of Gatewood don't know the full story—a story of triumph from pain, rebellion from brutality, hope from suffering.

Book Synopsis Granny’S Place by : Arvis Marie Taitt
Download or read book Granny’S Place written by Arvis Marie Taitt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 1958, and back in the day, the old folks still seemed to have a saying for everything, especially in Suffolk, Virginia. One such saying was that if a baby took eleven months to arrive on this side of the hereafter, that same baby would meet its guardian angel face-to-face and be guarded and protected for the childs lifetime. Believe it or not, theres something else the old folks use to say about such a mystic birth, and that was that if the baby was born with a thin membrane covering the face, not only would that child be able to actually see its guardian angel one day, but also will have the gift of predicting the future. The guardian angel bit of news was of particular importance because that child experienced the death of a loved one and numerous harsh circumstances in life as well.

Book Synopsis Where Has Grandma Gone? by : Anne F. Butler
Download or read book Where Has Grandma Gone? written by Anne F. Butler and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-04-22 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a mental health therapist contracted at a nursing home and rehab for thirteen years, I had the opportunity to observe the reactions of children visiting a loved one. My clients were those with mental health issues, various kinds of dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Most of these would spend the rest of their lives there. It was especially disturbing to see the responses or lack of responses of the children visiting Alzheimer’s patients. It was so obvious they did not understand the change in their loved one, and it made them fearful. Also, the patient, most often a grandparent, would be disturbed that the child did not respond to them as they remembered. It was even more disturbing to a child, as their loved one moved through the more advanced stages of Alzheimer’s. Due to my concern for these children, I wanted to write a story that would help them understand Alzheimer’s disease and dispel their fear. Where Has Grandma Gone? is a story to be read by the child. Later pages will contain information for the adult reader. The writing of this book has been my dream for many years as I’ve seen the need for such a book. My prayer is that this book will be of great value to all those having to deal with Alzheimer’s disease. May God bless the reader and strengthen them in all their ways.

Book excerpt: I wrote this book during the Covid-19 lockdown, Feb-July 2020. It was important to me to pass on my Irish heritage to my girls. I want them to know what it was like growing up in the fifties in Ireland surrounded by the richness of extended family and the love of music. The heartbreak of leaving home, the stupid mistakes I made because of insecurities and the importance of having God in one’s life. And most of all because my Granddaughter asked me to do it.
