Book excerpt: The monograph focuses on the typological differences between the four most widely spoken Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian) and Czech. Utilizing data from InterCorp, the parallel corpus project of the Czech National Corpus, the book analyses various categories (expression of potential non-volitional participation, iterativity, causation, beginning of an action and adverbial subordination) to discover differences and similarities between Czech and the Romance languages. Due to the massive amount of data mined, as well as the high number of languages examined, the monograph presents general and individual typological features of the four Romance languages and Czech that often exceed what has previously been accepted in the field of comparative linguistics.

Book excerpt: A plane brought down in flames. A dead man the only witness as the dominos start to fall... On the Russian border with Afghanistan, the wreckage of a military transport plane lies half-submerged in a lake. Everyone on board is dead, only their charred remains left behind. British intelligence operative Patrick Hyde, in hiding in Tajikistan, witnesses the tragedy. He discovers, to his horror, the identity of one of the bodies: Irena Nikitina, the wife of a high-ranking politician leading Russia’s liberalisation reforms. But was her death an accident? Within the crumbling Soviet Union, not everyone is as supportive of reform as the Nikitins. A rogue group of Russians working with Western collaborators will lose everything if peace prevails, and are prepared to use any means necessary to restore hard-line communism. Hyde must act quickly and uncover the conspiracy against the Nikitins, before it is too late. But with British, American and Russian conspirators around every corner, this may be Hyde’s most dangerous mission yet... Perfect for fans of Lee Child and Desmond Bagley, The Last Raven is a tale of political terror and deadly patriotism, from master storyteller Craig Thomas.

This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from the Preface: "With the best intention of justifying Messrs. Pitman's confidence in entrusting me with the compilation of a Spanish Grammar to form part of the series of "Commercial Grammars," I set to work to produce a book which, while avoiding pedantry and the agglomeration of superfluous and intricate rules which puzzle the student, should equally avoid falling into the extreme of coarseness which debases the subject under study, or the scrappiness resulting in gaps that perplex and discourage him. I have tried to be brief and clear in the rules given."

Book Synopsis Interregional Interaction in Ancient Mesoamerica by : Joshua Englehardt
Download or read book Interregional Interaction in Ancient Mesoamerica written by Joshua Englehardt and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2019-05-27 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interregional Interaction in Ancient Mesoamerica explores the role of interregional interaction in the dynamic sociocultural processes that shaped the pre-Columbian societies of Mesoamerica. Interdisciplinary contributions from leading scholars investigate linguistic exchange and borrowing, scribal practices, settlement patterns, ceramics, iconography, and trade systems, presenting a variety of case studies drawn from multiple spatial, temporal, and cultural contexts within Mesoamerica. Archaeologists have long recognized the crucial role of interregional interaction in the development and cultural dynamics of ancient societies, particularly in terms of the evolution of sociocultural complexity and economic systems. Recent research has further expanded the archaeological, art historical, ethnographic, and epigraphic records in Mesoamerica, permitting a critical reassessment of the complex relationship between interaction and cultural dynamics. This volume builds on and amplifies earlier research to examine sociocultural phenomena—including movement, migration, symbolic exchange, and material interaction—in their role as catalysts for variability in cultural systems. Interregional cultural exchange in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica played a key role in the creation of systems of shared ideologies, the production of regional or “international” artistic and architectural styles, shifting sociopolitical patterns, and changes in cultural practices and meanings. Interregional Interaction in Ancient Mesoamerica highlights, engages with, and provokes questions pertinent to understanding the complex relationship between interaction, sociocultural processes, and cultural innovation and change in the ancient societies and cultural histories of Mesoamerica and will be of interest to archaeologists, linguists, and art historians. Book Synopsis Passion In The Peak by : John Buxton Hilton
Download or read book Passion In The Peak written by John Buxton Hilton and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-07-19 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lord Furnival, a left-of-centre dilettante, tries to stage a musical version of the Oberammergau Passion Play in the High Peak of Derbyshire, he does not foresee what strife and tension he is setting in motion. Petty thefts, a peeping Tom, artistic jealousies, a vendetta against Mary Magdalene – the record of crime culminates in the murder of the hyped rock singer who is brought out of disgraced retirement to play the Christ part. Kenworthy is called in as a private consultant to ‘protect the interests of the management’ and finds himself involved with a bewildering array of eccentrics: Jimmy Lindop, a sound technician with old scores to settle; Julian Harpur, a neurotic adolescent whose mother believes him a genius; Alfie Tandy, who has confessed to dozens of murders in his time, and who carries his worldly belongings about in an old banjo-case; Freddy Kershaw, a detective-constable who is suspended from duty for telling the truth; and Joan Culver, who is trying to straighten herself out about filial duty, sex and life. This is knotty a puzzle as Kenworthy and his reader have ever squared up to, as the case-work takes us out of Derbyshire into the squalid history of The Stalagmites, a failed rock group of London’s swinging years. On the way we take a Hiltonian look at more than one level of contemporary society.
Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Mesoamerican Animals by : Kitty F. Emery
Download or read book The Archaeology of Mesoamerican Animals written by Kitty F. Emery and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognition of the role of animals in ancient diet, economy, politics, and ritual is vital to understanding ancient cultures fully, while following the clues available from animal remains in reconstructing environments is vital to understanding the ancient relationship between humans and the world around them. In response to the growing interest in the field of zooarchaeology, this volume presents current research from across the many cultures and regions of Mesoamerica, dealing specifically with the most current issues in zooarchaeological literature. Geographically, the essays collected here index the different aspects of animal use by the indigenous populations of the entire area between the northern borders of Mexico and the southern borders of lower Central America. This includes such diverse cultures as the north Mexican hunter-gatherers, the Olmec, Maya, Mixtec, Zapotec, and Central American Indians. The time frame of the volume extends from the earliest human occupation, the Preclassic, Classic, Postclassic, and Colonial manifestations, to recent times. The book's chapters, written by experts in the field of Mesoamerican zooarchaeology, provide important general background on the domestic and ritual use of animals in early and classic Mesoamerica and Central America, but deal also with special aspects of human-animal relationships such as early domestication and symbolism of animals, and important yet otherwise poorly represented aspects of taphonomy and zooarchaeological methodology. Spanish-language version also available (ISBN 978-1-937040-12-3).
