The Grammar is divided into two parts. Part A covers traditional grammar points such as phrase order, and the structure of noun phrases and verb phrases. Part B is carefully organized around language functions and situations such as: Asking questions Communication strategies Making comparisons Giving orders and making requests Expressing apologies, regrets, and sympathy The two parts of the Grammar are closely linked by extensive cross-references, providing a grammatical and functional perspective on many patterns. The Grammar is coordinated with the Workbook, which provides grammar-focused and situation-focused exercises to facilitate practice and reinforce language use. All grammar points and functions are richly illustrated with examples presented in simplified and traditional characters and Pinyin romanization, with a strong emphasis on contemporary usage. This third edition includes new sections on character structure, social media, speaker perspective, and more, as well as updated illustrative sentences and an expanded index. Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar is ideal for all learners of Mandarin Chinese, from beginner to intermediate and advanced students.

Book excerpt: This lively, beginning German text is the perfect choice for those who want to move in a more communicative direction without abandoning a focus on grammar. Deutsch: Na Klar! uses a solid four-skills approach with a difference: the vocabulary, grammar, and reading sections are integrated with authentic materials, allowing students to learn language and culture simultaneously. German materials (advertisements, menus, newspaper articles, etc.) are used to present new vocabulary, introduce grammar points, and launch communicative activities. A listening-comprehension tape is tied to the text-book to help students improve listening skills.

Book Synopsis Writing Across Cultures by : Angel Rama
Download or read book Writing Across Cultures written by Angel Rama and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ángel Rama was one of twentieth-century Latin America's most distinguished men of letters. Writing across Cultures is his comprehensive analysis of the varied sources of Latin American literature. Originally published in 1982, the book links Rama's work on Spanish American modernism with his arguments about the innovative nature of regionalist literature, and it foregrounds his thinking about the close relationship between literary movements, such as modernism or regionalism, and global trends in social and economic development. In Writing across Cultures, Rama extends the Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortiz's theory of transculturation far beyond Cuba, bringing it to bear on regional cultures across Latin America, where new cultural arrangements have been forming among indigenous, African, and European societies for the better part of five centuries. Rama applies this concept to the work of the Peruvian novelist, poet, and anthropologist José María Arguedas, whose writing drew on both Spanish and Quechua, Peru's two major languages and, by extension, cultures. Rama considered Arguedas's novel Los ríos profundos (Deep Rivers) to be the most accomplished example of narrative transculturation in Latin America. Writing across Cultures is the second of Rama's books to be translated into English.
