Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering Mathematics with Examples and Applications provides a compact and concise primer in the field, starting with the foundations, and then gradually developing to the advanced level of mathematics that is necessary for all engineering disciplines. Therefore, this book's aim is to help undergraduates rapidly develop the fundamental knowledge of engineering mathematics. The book can also be used by graduates to review and refresh their mathematical skills. Step-by-step worked examples will help the students gain more insights and build sufficient confidence in engineering mathematics and problem-solving. The main approach and style of this book is informal, theorem-free, and practical. By using an informal and theorem-free approach, all fundamental mathematics topics required for engineering are covered, and readers can gain such basic knowledge of all important topics without worrying about rigorous (often boring) proofs. Certain rigorous proof and derivatives are presented in an informal way by direct, straightforward mathematical operations and calculations, giving students the same level of fundamental knowledge without any tedious steps. In addition, this practical approach provides over 100 worked examples so that students can see how each step of mathematical problems can be derived without any gap or jump in steps. Thus, readers can build their understanding and mathematical confidence gradually and in a step-by-step manner. Covers fundamental engineering topics that are presented at the right level, without worry of rigorous proofs Includes step-by-step worked examples (of which 100+ feature in the work) Provides an emphasis on numerical methods, such as root-finding algorithms, numerical integration, and numerical methods of differential equations Balances theory and practice to aid in practical problem-solving in various contexts and applications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the four previous editions the author presented a text firmly grounded in the mathematics that engineers and scientists must understand and know how to use. Tapping into decades of teaching at the US Navy Academy and the US Military Academy and serving for twenty-five years at (NASA) Goddard Space Flight, he combines a teaching and practical experience that is rare among authors of advanced engineering mathematics books. This edition offers a smaller, easier to read, and useful version of this classic textbook. While competing textbooks continue to grow, the book presents a slimmer, more concise option. Instructors and students alike are rejecting the encyclopedic tome with its higher and higher price aimed at undergraduates. To assist in the choice of topics included in this new edition, the author reviewed the syllabi of various engineering mathematics courses that are taught at a wide variety of schools. Due to time constraints an instructor can select perhaps three to four topics from the book, the most likely being ordinary differential equations, Laplace transforms, Fourier series and separation of variables to solve the wave, heat, or Laplace's equation. Laplace transforms are occasionally replaced by linear algebra or vector calculus. Sturm-Liouville problem and special functions (Legendre and Bessel functions) are included for completeness. Topics such as z-transforms and complex variables are now offered in a companion book, Advanced Engineering Mathematics: A Second Course by the same author. MATLAB is still employed to reinforce the concepts that are taught. Of course, this Edition continues to offer a wealth of examples and applications from the scientific and engineering literature, a highlight of previous editions. Worked solutions are given in the back of the book.

This textbook supports this need by placing a strong emphasis on visualization and the methods and tools needed across the whole of engineering. The visual approach is emphasized, and excessive proofs and derivations are avoided. The visual images explain and teach the mathematical methods. The book’s website provides dynamic and interactive codes in Mathematica to accompany the examples for the reader to explore on their own with Mathematica or the free Computational Document Format player, and it provides access for instructors to a solutions manual. Strongly emphasizes a visual approach to engineering mathematics Written for years 2 to 4 of an engineering degree course Website offers support with dynamic and interactive Mathematica code and instructor’s solutions manual Brian Vick is an associate professor at Virginia Tech in the United States and is a longtime teacher and researcher. His style has been developed from teaching a variety of engineering and mathematical courses in the areas of heat transfer, thermodynamics, engineering design, computer programming, numerical analysis, and system dynamics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. eResource material is available for this title at www.crcpress.com/9780367432768.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to serve as a core text for courses in advanced engineering mathematics required by many engineering departments. The style of presentation is such that the student, with a minimum of assistance, can follow the step-by-step derivations. Liberal use of examples and homework problems aid the student in the study of the topics presented. Ordinary differential equations, including a number of physical applications, are reviewed in Chapter One. The use of series methods are presented in Chapter Two, Subsequent chapters present Laplace transforms, matrix theory and applications, vector analysis, Fourier series and transforms, partial differential equations, numerical methods using finite differences, complex variables, and wavelets. The material is presented so that four or five subjects can be covered in a single course, depending on the topics chosen and the completeness of coverage. Incorporated in this textbook is the use of certain computer software packages. Short tutorials on Maple, demonstrating how problems in engineering mathematics can be solved with a computer algebra system, are included in most sections of the text. Problems have been identified at the end of sections to be solved specifically with Maple, and there are computer laboratory activities, which are more difficult problems designed for Maple. In addition, MATLAB and Excel have been included in the solution of problems in several of the chapters. There is a solutions manual available for those who select the text for their course. This text can be used in two semesters of engineering mathematics. The many helpful features make the text relatively easy to use in the classroom.

Book excerpt: This excellent book will be very useful for students and researchers wishing to learn the basics of Poisson geometry, as well as for those who know something about the subject but wish to update and deepen their knowledge. The authors' philosophy that Poisson geometry is an amalgam of foliation theory, symplectic geometry, and Lie theory enables them to organize the book in a very coherent way. —Alan Weinstein, University of California at Berkeley This well-written book is an excellent starting point for students and researchers who want to learn about the basics of Poisson geometry. The topics covered are fundamental to the theory and avoid any drift into specialized questions; they are illustrated through a large collection of instructive and interesting exercises. The book is ideal as a graduate textbook on the subject, but also for self-study. —Eckhard Meinrenken, University of Toronto

This book addresses this question with 125 career profiles written by people with degrees and backgrounds in mathematics. With job titles ranging from sports analyst to science writer to inventory specialist to CEO, the volume provides ample evidence that one really can do nearly anything with a degree in mathematics. These professionals share how their mathematical education shaped their career choices and how mathematics, or the skills acquired in a mathematics education, is used in their daily work. The degrees earned by the authors profiled here are a good mix of bachelors, masters, and PhDs. With 114 completely new profiles since the third edition, the careers featured within accurately reflect current trends in the job market. College mathematics faculty, high school teachers, and career counselors will all find this a useful resource. Career centers, mathematics departments, and student lounges should have a copy available for student browsing. In addition to the career profiles, the volume contains essays from career counseling professionals on the topics of job-searching, interviewing, and applying to graduate school.

Book excerpt: This text serves as a concise introduction to the ocean of information collectively known as “Engineering Mathematics.” Admittedly, compiling everything into a short book that is useful to any audience is an impossible task; therefore, we picked a few main ideas holding up the mathematics within the engineering curriculum instead of stuffing all of the details into such a small package. This text addresses conceptual understanding as often as possible by providing an intuitive basis for formalized study within engineering/mathematics. Whether you are a math or science instructor tasked to teach an engineering class, a high school student looking into engineering, or an engineering student already, we hope you are able to walk away from this text with tangible outcomes—maybe even a refined perspective on the subject.
