Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This examination of a distinctive period of French painting discusses the interrelated artistic cities and regions that formed essential links in Renaissance-era artistic exchanges. The interaction between the French courts and Paris during the International Gothic period, the diffusion of ars nova in France during the days of Charles VII and Louis XI, and the standardization of a French style based on Jean Fouquet's model are among the artistic geographies considered in this analysis. Reproductions of key works that illustrate cultural confluences accompany an updated introduction to the scholarship of these relationships.

Download or read book Gothic Art written by Victoria Charles and published by Parkstone International. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gothic art finds its roots in the powerful architecture of the cathedrals of northern France. It is a medieval art movement that evolved throughout Europe over more than 200 years. Leaving curved Roman forms behind, the architects started using flying buttresses and pointed arches to open up cathedrals to daylight. A period of great economic and social change, the Gothic era also saw the development of a new iconography celebrating the Holy Mary – in drastic contrast to the fearful themes of dark Roman times. Full of rich changes in all of the various art forms (architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.), Gothic art paved the way for the Italian Renaissance and International Gothic movement.

Book Synopsis Gothic Art from the Twelfth to Fifteenth Centuries by : Andrew Martindale
Download or read book Gothic Art from the Twelfth to Fifteenth Centuries written by Andrew Martindale and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few artistic terms have had such a confused history as the word "Gothic." Andrew Martindale approaches this complex period by first setting up terms with which to deal with it. He considers Gothic art basically as the style that developed in the Ile-de-France and northern France from 1140 to 1240. He traces the ascendancy of the style in other areas of France and in adjoining countries until 1250, when Paris had become an important artistic center and the norther French style had been widely adopted outside France. then Martindale treats Italian art of the next century, which culminated in the painting of Giotto. He shows how the Gothic style influenced the Italians and how their style in turn began to spread northward. From 1350 to 1400, there was increased exchange of artistic ideas across the Alps. There is a chapter on the brief floweirng of Prague as the center of a curiously hybrid culture at this time. "Gothic Art" is equally comprehensive in its treatment of the minor arts of the age and their interrelations -- painting, manuscript illumination, stained glass, tapestry, and metalwork. -- From publisher's description.
