Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised softcover edition of David Menary's "Gordie Howe: A Year in Galt" coinciding with the centennial of Galt Arena Gardens. This edition highlights a pivotal year in Howe's youth - the year a young prairie boy left his home to go east to Galt, Ontario, for the 1944-45 hockey season. Away from home for the first time, he was 16 that season, and too shy to attend the local high school. Howe became a fixture with the Galt Junior A Red Wings, even though he was unable to play league games in the OHA. The team already had a western import - Terry Cavanagh, later the mayor of Edmonton - but coach Al Murray convinced Howe to stay with the team to practice and play exhibition games. Howe and some of his teammates recall many of the people associated with the team from that year. Subsequent visits back to Galt (Cambridge), and the historic arena which was reminiscent of the Olympia in Detroit, showed Howe at his off-ice finest; a kindly, considerate man whose characteristic humour and palpable decency endeared him to old man, maiden, young man and child. Read about Howe, and teammates like Pavelich, as well as later Galt players like Terry Sawchuk, Pete Conacher, Kenny Wharram, and Bobby Hull.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hockey jersey is the handsome exterior of a rugged game. Hockey is full of colorful personalities, but hockey's most colorful symbols, by far, are its jerseys. Some are garish, same are subdued and some are even beautiful, but the best are what most fans would consider "classic." In Hockey Hall of Fame Book of Jerseys, the best and most interesting jerseys in the Hall's collection -- as well as the all-time sentimental favorites -- have been put on display for your enjoyment. Paired with stories about the players who wore them, the teams and leagues they represented and the tournaments they were made for, the jerseys featured in Hockey Hall of Fame Book of Jerseys come to life, just as they did when worn by the heroes we've all come to love: Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby, Cammi Granato, Joe Sakic, Vladislav Tretiak, Ray Bourque, Maurice Richard, Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. But author Steve Milton also provides fascinating stories about little-known players and teams, such as: Bill Hutton and the 1930-31 Philadelphia Quakers and John Coward and the 1936 gold-medal winning Great Britain Olympic squad. This new edition features new stories that even a veteran hockey fanatic might have missed, including: The 1980-81 Phoenix Roadrunners jersey in which Bruce Boudreau scored his 500th professional point The 1924-25 Victoria Cougars sweater worn by Frank Frederickson as Victoria became the last non-NHL team to win the Stanley Cup The jersey Billy Bridges wore while leading Canada to the gold in the 2006 Paralympic Games. Each jersey in this collection is one of a kind -- battered and bruised, ripped and torn, stitched and stained -- and every one has its own story.

Book excerpt: Largely drawn from his columns for Canadian Notes & Queries and entries in his popular blog by the same name, Brian Busby's The Dusty Bookcase explores the fascinating world of Canada's lesser-known literary efforts: works that suffered censorship, critical neglect, or brilliant yet fleeting notoriety. These rare and quirky totems of Canadiana, collected over the last three decades, form a travel diary of sorts—yet one without maps. Covering more than 250 books, peppered with observations on the writing and publishing scenes, Busby's work explores our cultural past, questioning why certain works are celebrated and others ignored. Brilliantly illustrated with covers and ephemera related to the titles discussed, The Dusty Bookcase draws much needed attention to unknown writing worthy of our attention, and some of our acclaim.

Book excerpt: In Blood Feud, Colorado Avalanche beat writer Adrian Dater not only submits that the Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry was the most feverish match-up in recent years, but also that there was none better played. No fewer than twenty players have or will eventually make it to the Hall of Fame; the best scorers were matched up against the best goalies; brilliant coaches could be found on both benches; and two of the league's smartest general managers ruthlessly tried to one-up each other at every NHL trade deadline. Blood Feud is a rollicking story of a fierce, and often violent, rivalry.

Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.

Book excerpt: Looking back on a memorable career, Darren McCarty recounts his time as one of the most visible and beloved members of the Detroit Red Wings as well as his personal struggles with addiction, finances, and women and his daily battles to overcome them. As a member of four Red Wings' Stanley Cup&–winning teams, McCarty played the role of enforcer from 1993 to 2004 and returning again in 2008 and 2009. His “Grind Line” with teammates Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby physically overmatched some of the best offensive lines in the NHL, but he was more than just a brawler: his 127 career goals included several of the highlight variety, including an inside-out move against Philadelphia in the clinching game of the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. As colorful a character as any NHL player, he has arms adorned with tattoos, and he was the lead singer in the hard rock band Grinder during the offseason. Yet this autobiography details what may have endeared him most to his fans: the honest, open way he has dealt with his struggles in life off the ice. Whether dealing with substance abuse, bankruptcy, divorce, or the death of his father, Darren McCarty has always seemed to persevere.

A boy comes across a stray cat on the street and brings him home to his mother. Though the mother has reservations, she reluctantly agrees to keep him.Despite the boy's assurances, the cat is nothing but trouble. Left alone, he dips his paws into the goldfish bowl, sharpens his claws on the couch and snacks on the butter. One day, the boy rushes home to tidy up before his mom gets home and is surprised to find she's already there. And he's even more surprised to learn that his "reluctant" mother doesn't seem to mind this naughty kitty after all. Also included is a CD single recording performed by Norm Hacking of the song that inspired the book. Hacking was nominated for a 2004 Canadian Independent Music Award."Hacking's songs capture a very real slice of life ... Norm Hacking is a first class song craftsman." -Kingston Whig-Standard
