Book excerpt: At the age of 17, Randall Hunsacker shoots his mother's boyfriend, steals a car and comes close to killing himself. His second chance lies in a small Nebraska farm town, where the landmarks include McKibben's Mobil Station, Frmka's Superette, and a sign that says The Wages of Sin is Hell. This is Goodnight, a place so ingrown and provincial that Randall calls it "Sludgeville"-until he starts thinking of it as home. Download or read book The Last Good Night written by Emily Listfield and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-02-10 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Best Intentions and Waiting to Surface comes a “taut and disturbing” (The New York Times) psychological thriller about a television news anchor whose idyllic life is shattered when her shadowed past comes back to haunt her. Laura Barrett has it all—a supportive husband, a beautiful baby daughter, and a career in television that has made her face familiar to millions. But there’s a shadow over Laura’s happiness. And when a man approaches her after she leaves work and calls her “Marta,” Laura knows that what she’s feared for so long has finally arrived. The postcard with the coffin on it confirms that her idyll is over. Marta was a teenager, growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, when she did something terrible one night in a run-down motel, and she’s been running from it ever since. For twenty years, Laura has been trying to erase Marta from her memory. Now a man from her past is confronting her, demanding answers. At first, Laura thinks she can control the situation. But suddenly, she’s facing every mother’s nightmare: her daughter is kidnapped. To get her baby back, Laura’s going to have to risk her marriage, her career, and her life, and finally face up to what happened that night so long ago. Gripping and suspenseful, The Last Good Night “ratchets up the tension and fully involves the reader in her heroine’s harrowing ordeal” (Publishers Weekly).
Book Synopsis Good Night Jonathan - Good Morning Laura by : B. Smith
Download or read book Good Night Jonathan - Good Morning Laura written by B. Smith and published by Chipmunkapublishing ltd. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description The author tragically lost her young son Jonathan, aged 11, in an accident involving unsafe goalposts in January 1991. Since that time she has campaigned, fiercely and tirelessly to make football a safe game for other children to play and her campaign has involved her in meetings with Sports Ministers, Football Association Managers, Members of Parliament, and Television, Radio, and Newspaper interviews. Until this tragedy nobody would have believed the strength she has to fight. During this campaign her efforts have involved such heartache because each time she thought that legislation on safety was in sight another tragedy involving unsafe goalposts occurred and she addressed the hurt that other parents were feeling when another 10 children, in the UK alone, died in separate incidents due to unsafe goalposts. Each time she again went through the empathetic pain of losing her much loved son. Whilst coping with the campaign the author gave birth to Laura, a severely disabled little girl, who became the "Light of her Life." Her book charts Laura's progress from her initial diagnosis, and the doctor's assessment that Laura would never walk or talk, through to her teenage years. The author's fighting spirit and that of her family, along with Laura's tenacity to prove everybody wrong on so many occasions, has won through and the book tells how she has worked so hard to make Laura's life the very best it can be. This lovely, happy little girl is at the centre of what is a real, loving family and the book itself is Laura's story. It is a very inspiring read, especially to anyone who has received the devastating news that their child is not the perfect little person they expected them to be. About the Author Mrs Brenda Smith is 53 and the mother of an autistic child with complex special needs. She is a wife, mother and grandmother and is employed as a Clerical Assistant with the Civil Service. Brenda lost her young son in a tragic accident involving unsafe goalposts and has campaigned for 15 years to try to get legislation in place for all goalposts to be safe in an effort to protect other children. She had lost a much loved child and been given a child that needed so much care and attention, and she always will. Brenda enjoyed writing the book and feels that if she had read a similar book it would have given her the strength and hope that she needed after she heard the news that Laura had such complex special needs.

Book Synopsis My Russian Grandmother and Her American Vacuum Cleaner by : Meir Shalev
Download or read book My Russian Grandmother and Her American Vacuum Cleaner written by Meir Shalev and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed novel A Pigeon and a Boy comes a charming tale of family ties, over-the-top housekeeping, and the sport of storytelling in Nahalal, the village of Meir Shalev’s birth. Here we meet Shalev’s amazing Grandma Tonia, who arrived in Palestine by boat from Russia in 1923 and lived in a constant state of battle with what she viewed as the family’s biggest enemy in their new land: dirt. Grandma Tonia was never seen without a cleaning rag over her shoulder. She received visitors outdoors. She allowed only the most privileged guests to enter her spotless house. Hilarious and touching, Grandma Tonia and her regulations come richly to life in a narrative that circles around the arrival into the family’s dusty agricultural midst of the big, shiny American sweeper sent as a gift by Great-uncle Yeshayahu (he who had shockingly emigrated to the sinful capitalist heaven of Los Angeles!). America, to little Meir and to his forebears, was a land of hedonism and enchanting progress; of tempting luxuries, dangerous music, and degenerate gum-chewing; and of women with painted fingernails. The sweeper, a stealth weapon from Grandpa Aharon’s American brother meant to beguile the hardworking socialist household with a bit of American ease, was symbolic of the conflicts and visions of the family in every respect. The fate of Tonia’s “svieeperrr”—hidden away for decades in a spotless closed-off bathroom after its initial use—is a family mystery that Shalev determines to solve. The result, in this cheerful translation by Evan Fallenberg, is pure delight, as Shalev brings to life the obsessive but loving Tonia, the pioneers who gave his childhood its spirit of wonder, and the grit and humor of people building ever-new lives.
