Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a surge of interest in the lexicon. The demand for a fuller and more adequate understanding of lexical meaning required by developments in computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science has stimulated a refocused interest in linguistics, psychology, and philosophy. Different disciplines have studied lexical structure from their own vantage points, and because scholars have only intermittently communicated across disciplines, there has been little recognition that there is a common subject matter. The conference on which this volume is based brought together interested thinkers across the disciplines of linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and computer science to exchange ideas, discuss a range of questions and approaches to the topic, consider alternative research strategies and methodologies, and formulate interdisciplinary hypotheses concerning lexical organization. The essay subjects discussed include: * alternative and complementary conceptions of the structure of the lexicon, * the nature of semantic relations and of polysemy, * the relation between meanings, concepts, and lexical organization, * critiques of truth-semantics and referential theories of meaning, * computational accounts of lexical information and structure, and * the advantages of thinking of the lexicon as ordered.

Book excerpt: This volume comprises nine contributions that were written by up-and-coming corpus-based researchers with varied areas of expertise, who were all disciples of Douglas Biber sometime in the past two decades. These papers cover a wide variety of linguistic analyses and describe the principles of the Flagstaff school: a careful procedure for language corpora collection with special consideration for corpus size, representativeness, sampling and systematic analysis; the use of computer programming abilities that allow the posing of corpus-based research questions never asked before; and a strong emphasis on the combination of quantitative methods based on sound and innovative statistical procedures complemented with comprehensive qualitative functional analyses of the language. This volume has been edited in honor of Douglas Biber, a pioneer of the American school of corpus-based research.

Unlike other programming books, CodeNotes drills down to the core aspects of a technology, focusing on the key elements needed in order to understand it quickly and implement it immediately. It is a unique resource for developers, filling the gap between comprehensive manuals and pocket references. CodeNotes for Web-Based UI shows how to build sophisticated, high-performance UIs for web-based applications using technologies such as JavaScript, DHTML, and CSS as well as XML and XSLT. It also details how to leverage technology and solve common web-based presentation and manipulation problems. Web designers and programmers will both develop a better understanding of common web-based design challenges, and discover some common approaches to solving these problems. This edition of CodeNotes includes: -A global overview of a technology and explanation of what problems it can be used to solve -Real-world examples -"How and Why" and "Design Notes" sections that provide hints, tricks, workarounds, and tips on what should be taken advantage of or avoided -Instructions and classroom-style tutorials throughout from expert trainers and software developers Visit www.codenotes.com for updates, source code templates, access to message boards, and discussion of specific problems with CodeNotes authors and other developers. Every CodeNotes title is written and reviewed by a team of commercial software developers and technology experts. See "About the Authors" at the beginning of the book for more information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year's main conference focused on next-generation wireless and wired broadband networks, sensor networks and emerging applications related to access networks. The main conference received 23 submissions from 15 different countries. After a thorough review process, 9 papers were accepted from the open call, one distinguished researcher was invited to contribute an invited paper and one was invited for a post-deadline submission, yielding 11 technical papers altogether. The 11 technical papers were organized into 4 technical sessions. In addition, four posters were allocated for a poster session during the conference. Within the main program of the conference, two keynote speeches addressed hot topics on emerging trends and focus areas for access networks. The first keynote by Jens Malmodin from Ericsson addressed the energy and carbon footprint of ICT and media services and the second keynote by Peter Szilagyi, Nokia Siemens Networks, addressed self-organizing networks. Collocated together with the main conference of AccessNets 2010 was the First International ICST Workshop on Autonomic Networking and Self-Management in Access Networks (SELFMAGICNETS 2010), which complemented the main conference program with focused coverage on theories and technologies of autonomic networking and self-management. -- from preface.
