Of foreigners with large, innocent faces, no collars, and ponderous bodies roofed by wide-awakes 0f formidable circumference. On the bridge those gentle, untidy aliens were carefully. Examined, one by one - men, women, and phlegmatic youngsters. Their heads were un covered and tilted, uncompromising thumbs pushed back their brows, and vigilant doctors peered into the sockets of their eyes. For trachoma is a serious' disease, and Canada wants no more of it. At last we stood before the ship's doctor, who waved us on with the smiling! Assurance: You are all right But in my case one of the other doctors was not so sure. He bared my head and confronted me with searching severity. Then he 'returned my. Cap and I was free to' emigrate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For immigrants making the transoceanic journey from Europe or Asia to North America, the experience of a new country began when they disembarked. In Canada the federal government built a network of buildings that provided newcomers with shelter, services, and state support. "Immigration sheds" such as Pier 21 in Halifax – where ocean liners would dock and global migrants arrived and were processed – had many counterparts across the country: new arrivals were accommodated or incarcerated at reception halls, quarantine stations, and immigrant detention hospitals. For the Temporary Accommodation of Settlers reconstructs the experiences of people in these spaces – both immigrants and government agents – to pose a question at the heart of architectural thinking: how is meaning produced in the built environments that we encounter? David Monteyne interprets official governmental intentions and policy goals embodied by the architecture of immigration but foregrounds the unofficial, informal practices of people who negotiated these spaces to satisfy basic needs, ensure the safety of their families, learn about land and job opportunities, and ultimately arrive at their destinations. The extent of this Canadian network, which peaked in the early twentieth century at over sixty different sites, and the range of building types that comprised it are unique among immigrant-receiving nations in this period. In our era of pandemic quarantine and migrant detention facilities, For the Temporary Accommodation of Settlers offers new ways of seeing and thinking about the historical processes of immigration, challenging readers to consider government architecture and the experience of migrants across global networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of this century, about fifty non-Canadian private boys' schools existed in British Columbia, virtually all of them founded on the principles of private education in Britain and intended to serve the offspring of British settlers. In this book Jean Barman explains the appeal of the British model of education, re-creates the ethos of private school life, and analyzes the effect of these schools on the social fabric of the province.

Book excerpt: It is widely believed that only the growth of mass suburbs after World War II brought suburban living within reach of blue-collar workers, immigrants, and racial minorities. But in this original and intensive study of Toronto, Richard Harris shows that even prewar suburbs were socially and ethnically diverse, with a significant number of lower-income North American families making their homes on the urban fringe. In the United States and Canada, lack of planning set the stage for a uniquely North American tragedy. Unplanned Suburbs serves as a reminder of the dangers of unchecked suburban growth.
