Book Synopsis Race and America's Immigrant Press by : Robert M. Zecker
Download or read book Race and America's Immigrant Press written by Robert M. Zecker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race was all over the immigrant newspaper week after week. As early as the 1890s the papers of the largest Slovak fraternal societies covered lynchings in the South. While somewhat sympathetic, these articles nevertheless enabled immigrants to distance themselves from the "blackness" of victims, and became part of a strategy of asserting newcomers' tentative claims to "whiteness." Southern and eastern European immigrants began to think of themselves as white people. They asserted their place in the U.S. and demanded the right to be regarded as "Caucasians," with all the privileges that accompanied this designation. Circa 1900 eastern Europeans were slightingly dismissed as "Asiatic" or "African," but there has been insufficient attention paid to the ways immigrants themselves began the process of race tutoring through their own institutions. Immigrant newspapers offered a stunning array of lynching accounts, poems and cartoons mocking blacks, and paeans to America's imperial adventures in the Caribbean and Asia. Immigrants themselves had a far greater role to play in their own racial identity formation than has so far been acknowledged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a wide range of documentary and oral sources, including interviews with refugees, this book explores the responses in Manchester to those threatened by the rise of Fascism in Europe. By exploring the responses of particular segments of Manchester society, from Jewish communal organisations and the Zionist movement to the Christian churches, pacifist organisations and private charities, it offers a critical analysis of the factors which facilitated and limited the work of rescue and their effect on the lives of the seven or eight thousand refugees – Spanish, Italian, German, Austrian and Czech – who arrived in Manchester between 1933 and 1940.

Book Synopsis Keeping Up Appearances by : Catherine Horwood
Download or read book Keeping Up Appearances written by Catherine Horwood and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British have always been concerned about accent, appearance and class, but at no time during the twentieth century was ‘keeping up appearances’ more important than during the 1920s and 1930s. From the impecunious youth anxious to create a favourable impression at the local tennis club dance to female office workers advised by the Daily Mail that women in business kept ‘their position partly, if not chiefly, by appearance’, we peer into the intimate lives and anxieties of the middle classes as they dressed to impress. Choices were influenced as much by the advent of mass production, economic stringency, snobbery and the influence of America, as by personal aesthetics. Seemingly insignificant items such as ties, braces, gloves and hats, could convey a lack of breeding if worn incorrectly. This engagingly written and illustrated book explores the social mores behind one of society’s most popular activities, and reveals not only how we dressed but why.
Book Synopsis Years of Growth South Waikato 1950-1980 by : Elsie Monahan
Download or read book Years of Growth South Waikato 1950-1980 written by Elsie Monahan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Waikato in the years 1950 to 1980 saw a period of rapid expansion, based around the increase and improvement of farming, the building of Hydro dams on the Waikato River and the utilisation of pine trees and the building of a large pulp and paper mill at Kinleith. To support this a town ( Tokoroa) grew from a small village to “almost a city”. The local government changes, the building of the infrastructure and the provision of a wide range of amenities are all part of the book. The people who came to the area came from many areas of the world and the developing of a community for all ensued. An amazing range of national and international achievers particularly in sports are also highlighted.
