Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Alaska for Gold: Or the Fortune Hunters of the Yukon The rush to the far-away territory of Alaska, when gold in large quantities was discovered upon Klondike Creek, was somewhat similar to the rush to California in years gone by. The gold fever spread to even the remotest of our hamlets, and men, young and old, poured forth, ready to endure every hardship if only the much-coveted prize might be secured. That many succeeded and that many more failed is now a matter of history, although of recent date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We, of course, did not know enough to take it even at that price. Ten years later it was offered to us for five million dollars, but during that ten years we had not acquired that amount of sense, and so did not take it. During all these years it was for sale or gift to any country in the world but England; but not till 1867 was any country in the world found with sense enough - any of them had money enough - to buy it. What little of sense on that subject we had acquired by that time seemed to be in the possession of two men one of them was William H. Seward, of New York, then Secretary of State; the other was Charles Sumner, of Massachusetts, then in the United States Senate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hunting for Gold, or Adventures in Klondyke Two years ago a friend of mine went out to the Yukon Valley. From the letters he sent me I have written the following story; also, as a slight acknowledgment of my deep obligation, I beg to dedicate this work to him. Perhaps I may be blamed for getting my ad venturers too easily and quickly up to Dawson City. There are not many Argonauts so favoured by fate, I must admit, if my friend is to be believed; but I did not like to harrow the minds of my readers with too much realism.
