Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav was one of the most celebrated masters of late Jewish mysticism and Hasidism, and his writings have become classics. This volume brings together translations of three seminal studies on Rabbi Nahman in German, Hebrew, and Yiddish with six new studies from scholars in various fields of Jewish studies. The presentation of new scholarly work widens the conversation about Hasidism in general and Rabbi Nahman in particular by viewing his ideology from the perspective of contemporary hermeneutic, philosophical, and literary perspectives incorporating the insights of postmodernism, gender theory, and literary criticism. New ground is covered in essays on Rabbi Nahman's attitude toward death, his approach to gender, his interpretation of circumcision, the impact of his tales on Yiddish literature, and his hermeneutic theory. The combination of classic and new studies in God's Voice from the Void offers a window into the trajectory of scholarship on Hasidism, including ways in which contemporary scholars of Hasidism and Hasidic literature both continue and develop the work of their predecessors.

Book excerpt: How do I know it's God? is one of the most commonly asked questions of new and mature Christians alike, and the aim of God Conversations is to both equip and inspire the reader and show them that hearing the voice of the Spirit is accessible to everyone who chooses to follow Jesus. Most Christians know that God speaks, yet struggle with how to recognise his voice in their everyday lives. What does God's voice sound like? How do we know if what we're hearing is from God? Stories of God talking to his people abound throughout the Bible, but we usually only get the highlights. We read; "And God said to Joseph; 'Go to Egypt'," and then; "Mary and Joseph left for Egypt." We don't get a blow-by-blow description of how God spoke. We don't receive a detailed explanation of how they knew it was God, and we don't get to see what was going on inside their heads as they acted on what they'd heard. In God Conversations, international speaker and pastor Tania Harris shares insights from her own journey about hearing God's voice. You'll get to eavesdrop on some contemporary conversations with God in the light of his communication with the ancient characters of the Bible. Part memoir, part teaching, this unique and creative collection of stories will help you to recognise God's voice when he speaks and how to respond when you do.

Book excerpt: Listening to the voice of God directs us toward a life of joy, contentment, and trust in God in all circumstances. God is always with us. When we take the time to pray, listen, to reflect, to block out the noise of the world, we can experience God’s presence. Through the pages of this book, you will come to understand the many ways that God speaks to all of us. As we open our minds and hearts, cultivate the time to be aware and listen, and develop our prayer journey, we draw closer to the heart of God. The author highlights stories from various people who in their ordinary lives discerned His voice and His love for them. Sometimes God’s voice was audible; other times it was through Scripture or a divine revelation. No matter what form God chose to communicate, it was every bit as meaningful. One person shares how he listened to God’s voice through divine intervention guiding him to make a life-changing decision for his family. Another heard the voice of God through a series of events as she visited patients in hospitals and nursing homes. Still another meets God through the beauty of nature. God spoke to the saints and prophets of the past—and He continues to speak to us today. Not all voices are from God. It is important to discern that which brings peace and that which divides and causes unrest. When God Speaks is a series of uplifting and personal stories that will help the reader to discern the difference. The author’s hope is that you will recall similar occurrences of unexplainable joy in your own lives, or a strong passion calling you to service. This book can be used by small faith groups in churches and by book clubs. It would appeal to youth groups, senior groups, Cursillo or Emmaus groups, pastors, and those wanting to deepen their prayerful relationship with God.

Book excerpt: This book is about the Voice speaking to people in present times and shares the impact on their lives. The Bible records God communicating with people in days of old. God is still speaking, are you listening, do you hear? The Voice speaks to people in all languages throughout the world. Its tone is one that even the deaf can hear. God may choose one of many ways to communicate to you. You may sometimes hear God's voice in extraordinary ways, such as through angels, dreams, or miraculous events. But more often, God speaks through your thoughts, or ordinary practices such as reading the Bible, praying quietly, and learning from circumstances.God will use dramatic means to get your attention, when necessary, but more often, He speaks through what people have described as a "still, small voice."Reading this work will give you an unprecedented sense of purpose and unshakeable inner peace. Be still and listen. The authors pray that readers will listen for God's voice and form an eternal relationship with Him.

Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781472453983, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivative 4.0 license. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.
