Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demon warrior puppets, sword-wielding Taoist priests, spirit mediums lacerating their bodies with spikes and blades—these are among the most dramatic images in Chinese religion. Usually linked to the propitiation of plague gods and the worship of popular military deities, such ritual practices have an obvious but previously unexamined kinship with the traditional Chinese martial arts. The long and durable history of martial arts iconography and ritual in Chinese religion suggests something far deeper than mere historical coincidence. Avron Boretz argues that martial arts gestures and movements are so deeply embedded in the ritual repertoire in part because they iconify masculine qualities of violence, aggressivity, and physical prowess, the implicit core of Chinese patriliny and patriarchy. At the same time, for actors and audience alike, martial arts gestures evoke the mythos of the jianghu, a shadowy, often violent realm of vagabonds, outlaws, and masters of martial and magic arts. Through the direct bodily practice of martial arts movement and creative rendering of jianghu narratives, martial ritual practitioners are able to identify and represent themselves, however briefly and incompletely, as men of prowess, a reward otherwise denied those confined to the lower limits of this deeply patriarchal society. Based on fieldwork in China and Taiwan spanning nearly two decades, Gods, Ghosts, and Gangsters offers a thorough and original account of violent ritual and ritual violence in Chinese religion and society. Close-up, sensitive portrayals and the voices of ritual actors themselves—mostly working-class men, many of them members of sworn brotherhoods and gangs—convincingly link martial ritual practice to the lives and desires of men on the margins of Chinese society. This work is a significant contribution to the study of Chinese ritual and religion, the history and sociology of Chinese underworld, the history and anthropology of the martial arts, and the anthropology of masculinity.

Book excerpt: How do individuals inscribe their spiritual identities and diasporic ethnicities in the city? Through a series of sociological and photographic essays, Terence Heng maps the various rituals, collectives, individuals and events that characterise Chinese religion practices in Singapore. From spirit mediums to the Hungry Ghost Festival, each chapter engages with the social, the spatial and the ephemeral, and in so doing it will explore the significance and relevance of Chinese religion in a secular nation-state; reveal the strategies and tactics used by diasporic individuals to perform and retain their identities; uncover the importance of flow and fluidity in the making of sacred space; and evidence the value and efficacy of the use of photographs in social research. Of Gods, Gifts and Ghosts is a ground-breaking exploration into the intersections between visual sociology, cultural geography and creative photographic practice. A visual monograph that gives equal importance to image and text, it interrogates the tensions between sacred and profane, official and unofficial, state and individual, physical and spiritual, peeling away the myriad layers of the spiritual imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish writer Edward J. M. D. Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany, ranks among the twentieth century's great masters of supernatural and science fiction. An outstanding dramatist whose supernatural plays anticipated the theater of the absurd, Dunsany was also a virtuoso writer of short stories and essays. This selection presents the finest of his works, gathered from long-out-of-print sources. Contents include the famous "Three Sailors' Gambit," possibly the best chess story ever written; the remarkable trilogy about Nuth and the Gnoles, Thangobrind the Jeweller, and the Gibbelins; exploits of the Gods, including both "The Gods of Pengana" and adventures from other books; and favorite adventures of Jorkens, prince of liars. Dunsany's spellbinding tales are complemented by the remarkable visions of Sidney H. Sime, whose delicate illustrations form an indispensable complement to the stories.

Book excerpt: Does the Bible really forbid all communication with the dead?-NO!Are ghosts actually demons trying to trick us?-OF COURSE NOT!Is it truly possible to be both a psychic medium and a Christian?-YES! These myths are so pernicious that they've become "common knowledge" even among non-Christians: that the Bible says you can't be involved in the paranormal or communicate with the dead. Period. No! Comma! The Bible doesn't actually forbid any and all communication with the dead. In fact, those activities the Old Testament actually does forbid have not been practice for millennia. Christians are actually commanded by Christ and the Apostles to perform ministry for the dead and to pray in relationship with the dead. The belief that Christians are required to continue their relationship with the dead is by no means a new interpretation of scripture. This teaching of Christ and the Apostles, continued now only in the Catholic Church, was held as sacred and not contradicted until the 1400s. Within the pages of this book, you will discover the truth of what the Bible really teaches about the relationship between the living and the dead. In this well-researched and compelling book, you will learn:* What the Jews, including Jesus and the Apostles, believed happens when we die.* Both Old and New Testament verses that prove we must continue our relationship with the dead.* Jesus' teachings that death simply cannot separate Christians and why any belief that it does is heresy.* Writings from the Apostles and other ancient Christians proving that they believed both in conversing with those in heaven and receiving visits from them. * What the Old Testament verses that seem to forbid communication with the dead actually say and mean.* What the original Hebrew words regarding ghosts and mediums in the Old Testament really mean and why they are always mistranslated.* Why God would give such gifts as mediumship to the living.* And so much more!Whether you are a Bible scholar, a paranormal investigator, or someone with psychic medium gifts who feels attacked by Christians, youwill be as shocked as much by what the Bible doesn't say as by what it does. From Jewish zombies and incantations over pits of blood to rabbinical tales of visits to Gehenna, this book takes you on a journey into an ancient world where the veil between life and death was too thin to see. You will visit a world where life and death existed on a continuum of vitality, from the highest level of life-force to the least. This book will then lead you into the Messianic age that Christ initiated and through a Christian universe in which, to quote St. Paul whether we are living or dead, to God, "all are alive." However, the most important place this book will lead you to is the truth.

Book excerpt: When people talk about or experience paranormal activity, ghosts are often a component--and enough of a component to be worth investigating and discussing. the popular theory about ghosts is that they are spirits of humans who have died, but this isn't consistent with teachings from the Bible. So, as Christians, we ask "Who and what are they?" to answer this, God, Ghosts & Christians looks briefly at various current theories, followed by an extensive look at ghosts from a Christian point of view, supported by biblical passages and personal experiences of the author and others. the author, an ordained minister, will take you through all aspects of the existence of ghosts in our world--from the ones that are demons to those that are well meaning and kind. Don't be fooled by media and nonbelievers--there is a quiet, but serious, war going on between Christians and ghosts. This book will affirm your beliefs, show you how to protect yourself and those you love and encourage you to help quiet the "whispers," and win the war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offerings of various kinds – food, incense, paper money and figures – have been central to Chinese culture for millennia, and as a public, visual display of spiritual belief, they are still evident today in China and in Chinatowns around the world. Using Hong Kong as a case study, Janet Scott looks at paper offerings from every conceivable angle – how they are made, sold, and used. Her comprehensive investigation touches on virtually every aspect of Chinese popular religion as it explores the many forms of these intricate objects, their manufacture, their significance, and their importance in rituals to honor gods, care for ancestors, and contend with ghosts. Throughout For Gods, Ghosts and Ancestors, paper offerings are presented as a vibrant and living tradition expressing worshippers' respect and gratitude for the gods, as well as love and concern for departed family members. Ranging from fake paper money to paper furniture, servant dolls, cigarettes, and toiletries – all multihued and artfully constructed – paper offerings are intended to provide for the needs of those in the spirit world. Readers are introduced to the variety of paper offerings and their uses in worship, in assisting worshippers with personal difficulties, and in rituals directed to gods, ghosts, and ancestors. We learn of the manufacture and sale of paper goods, life in paper shops, the training of those who make paper offerings, and the symbolic and artistic dimensions of the objects. Finally, the book considers the survival of this traditional craft, the importance of flexibility and innovation, and the role of compassion and filial piety in the use of paper offerings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did the West discover Chinese healing traditions? Most people might point to the "rediscovery" of Chinese acupuncture in the 1970s. In Needles, Herbs, Gods, and Ghosts, Linda Barnes leads us back, instead, to the thirteenth century to uncover the story of the West's earliest known encounters with Chinese understandings of illness and healing. As Westerners struggled to understand new peoples unfamiliar to them, how did they make sense of equally unfamiliar concepts and practices of healing? Barnes traces this story through the mid-nineteenth century, in both Europe and, eventually, the United States. She has unearthed numerous examples of Western missionaries, merchants, diplomats, and physicians in China, Europe, and America encountering and interpreting both Chinese people and their healing practices, and sometimes adopting their own versions of these practices. A medical anthropologist with a degree in comparative religion, Barnes illuminates the way constructions of medicine, religion, race, and the body informed Westerners' understanding of the Chinese and their healing traditions.

Book excerpt: Is there proof that "near death" and other spiritual experiences can cure afflictions of the body, mind, and spirit? Are there simple ways to tap into a "universal power source" that spiritual masters call enlightenment? Is there scientific evidence of life after death that is being overlooked by skeptics? Is there scientific proof of a spot in our brains that communicates with God and the universe? Pediatrician Melvin Morse believes the answer to all these questions is yes. Shedding new light on the links between science and mysticism, Where God Lives not only reveals the area of the brain that is our biological link to the universe, but also shows us the secret of tapping into the universal energy to achieve healing, personal peace, and transcendence. Filled with moving case histories, Where God Lives applies the rigor of science to the study of the spiritual to prove once and for all the existence of life after death.

Book excerpt: When we hear the word "paranormal," our interest often peaks because we are curious about things we don't understand. If we're being honest, when we hear about psychic powers or ghost hunting, we're inquisitive as to whether we have such powers or wonder what waits for us on the other side of life. The concept of talking with the dead or a good ghost story may privately intrigue us, even if we express our total disbelief to everyone around us. When we consider the "power" of things like telepathy, telekinesis, "pre" and "post" cognition, remote viewing, psychometry or any number of other paranormal abilities, we see similarities to events in the Bible that make for some strange bedfellows but are interesting none the less. In theory, you have the power to do anything described in this book. Everything listed in the table of contents is possible, given all the anecdotal evidence, but the question still remains: can or should you, and what does science and the Bible say about these abilities? Remember that scientific thought isn't the enemy, but neither is the Bible. As Einstein so aptly put it: "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." If we can open our minds to both the facts of science and the dogma of religion, we can understand the paranormal in a whole new way.

Book excerpt: Native American Mythology began long before the European settlers arrived on North American soil. Contrary to popular beliefs, there is more to Native American Folklore than stories of buffalo hunts, teepee living and animal stories. Hundreds of tribes throughout North American created a huge mythological system that has rivaled that of the Greeks. Many of these tales have been lost, or are often hard to find. This collection represents a history that should be remembered. As a Native American myself, I embrace these stories. Native Americans tribes offer such a rich heritage. They have recorded a huge amount of their history through storytelling. In these stories you will relive their history and the lives of North America’s First People. The stories in this book have been handed down from generation to generation. And in such tradition, they are now handed down to you, to share with the next generation. Included in this anthology, are a group of collected works from the well-known, to the often-forgotten tribes. The tales included within this book, feature some of the most familiar and popular recorded… Gods, Aliens and all things Paranormal. Among the stories included in this book are: The Star Feathers, The Nûñnë'hï And Other Spirit Folk, The Ghost Woman, The Gods and the Six Regions, Wíshakon and His Friend Visit the Plėthoak (Thunderers), The Raven Mocker, The Giants from the West, The Young Woman and Thunder, Tsuwe'nähï: A Legend of Pilot Knob, When the Storm God Rides, Qalagánguasê, Who Passed to the Land of Ghosts, The Deserted Village, The Boy from the Bottom of the Sea, Who Frightened the People of the House to Death, The Water Cannibals, Átahsaia, the Cannibal Demon, The Twelve Stars, The Man Who Married the Thunder's Sister, The Maiden Who Loved a Star, The Man Who Became a Star, Tsul'kälû, the Slant-eyed Giant, The Woman with the Iron Tail, The Evil Water Spirits, The Great Leech of Tlanusi'yï, A Man Chased by the Ancient of Lizards, The Origin of Death, The Giant Cloud-Swallower, Kumagdlak and the Living Arrows, The Stick That Sang, The Tsundige'wï, The Ice Man, The Thunder Spirits, The Walking Stone, and many more.
