Book excerpt: God inspired me to write this collection of poems, speeches, plays and skits for children’s Christmas and Easter programs in 2005. The objective was to help people discover the reason for our Savior’s Birth, Death, and Resurrection. This book is an inspiration when read to your children and grandchildren, even if you’re not involved with planning and implementing a program. However, if you’re the Children’s Ministry leader, this book has it all (poems, speeches, and skits for children’s Christmas and Easter programs. It will touch the hearts of God’s people and those who haven’t accepted Christ’s gift of Salvation. My deepest desire and prayer is that when the unsaved hear (or read) my poems, speeches, and skits, they will want to be saved.

Book excerpt: ONE OF THE most well-known passages in the Bible—and, perhaps, in all of literature—is the thirteenth chapter of St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, often called the “love chapter.” In it, Paul extols the qualities of love and ends his writing by stating, “And these three abide: faith, hope, and love.” These three virtues have guided me during my days on this earth: ? A faith that draws me daily to admit my inadequacies and to ask for the grace to live a life worthy of His calling ? A hope that continuously compels me to be a stronger person, a brighter light, a better writer ? A deep and abiding love for God, my family, my friends I have tried to express these virtues in the poems I share with you here. The majority of my poems do not rhyme. Instead, I like to build a rhythm in my writing by how I break each line in a verse so that your eye is constantly yearning for the next word. For something different, I have included two examples—escape and Lovers and Other Strangers—of concrete poetry, a form developed in the 1950s in which the physical shape of the words on the page adds as much meaning to the poem as the words themselves. And with a nod to my Bachelor’s degree in Russian, I also give you ? ?????????? ????????????, with its translation on the following page. I recently took one of those online quizzes about “what type of writer are you?” My results said that, “You write because you feel a deeper calling to the work, and because you want to explore the soul element of life. You’re not shy of adding a moral to the story and most want to reach readers who will understand your unique view on life. Writing is more than just putting words on paper for you—it is a written prayer.” And to that I can say only, “Amen.”

Book excerpt: As well as the name of a virus, a corona is a crown, the pearly glow around the sun in certain astronomical conditions and a poetic form where interlinking lines connect a sequence. It is the perfect name therefore for this new collection of 150 poems by the bestselling poet Malcolm Guite, each one written in response to the Bible’s 150 psalms as they appear in William Coverdale’s timeless translation. The Psalms express every human emotion with disarming honesty, as anger and thankfulness alike are directed at God. All of life is here with its moments of beauty and its times of despair and shame. Like the Psalms themselves, the poems do not avoid the cursing and glorying over the downfall of your enemies, but wrestle honestly with them as we do when we come to say them.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus and the Resurrection: An Easter Poem Dedicated to the Sunday School of the First Parish, Gloucester Prophetic soul, with wond'rous insight clear. He saw it all, nor shrank to face it all. But ah! His little band, the faithful few, Among the faithless many faithful found 'l'he few who left their nets, their trade, their all, Because their hearts were touched by Jesus' word Can they retain their faith, in God, and man, Their faith in Love's omnipotence o'er sin, And yet behold the sinless Son of God A bleeding victim on the hateful tree, His death permitted by the Righteous God? Their weak and wavering faith the Master knew, And knew their need of helping from on high, And fain would fit them for the trying hour; But now, that hour alas! Is near at hand. By his appointment, in an upper room At close of day, around the social board They meet; once more to keep the Paschal feast; The feast their fathers kept with sacred joy, Since that far day, when Moses led them forth A people free, from bondage long endured. As with her first book, Rays of Hope: Poems of Faith and Inspiration, the poems in this volume can be read as occasional devotional prompts or as desired. The reader is encouraged to use the open space on each page for his or her own reflections, expressions, or prayers. The poems are organized by months of the year for ease of reading, but most can be read at any time. The variable length and style of the poems is deliberate to enable a variety of reflection experiences and opportunities. Sparkling Light is written from a Christian perspective. The uplifting poems endeavor to give readers a renewed sense of awe at the beauty and wonder of Gods creative and transforming love and faithfulness.
