What he finds is a woman physically and psychically damaged by the men in her past and a job that entangles him in a right-wing political movement. Peopled with civil rights activists, fanatical Christians, corrupt politicians, and demented Hollywood stars, A Hall of Mirrors vividly depicts the dark side of America that erupted in the sixties. Book Synopsis Hall of Mirrors (Short Story) by : Kurt Vonnegut
Download or read book Hall of Mirrors (Short Story) written by Kurt Vonnegut and published by Delacorte Press. This book was released on 2009-10-20 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look at the Birdie is a collection of fourteen previously unpublished short stories from one of the most original writers in all of American fiction. In this series of perfectly rendered vignettes, written just as he was starting to find his comic voice, Kurt Vonnegut paints a warm, wise, and often funny portrait of life in post–World War II America—a world where squabbling couples, high school geniuses, misfit office workers, and small-town lotharios struggle to adapt to changing technology, moral ambiguity, and unprecedented affluence. In this disquieting tale, the investigation into a string of mysterious disappearances turns surreal for two detectives, when they pay a visit to the home of a celebrated hypnotist. But who will turn the tables on whom when the final spell is cast? Hall of Mirrors and the thirteen other never-before-published pieces that comprise Look at the Birdie serve as an unexpected gift for devoted readers who thought that Kurt Vonnegut's unique voice had been stilled forever—and provide a terrific introduction to his short fiction for anyone who has yet to experience his genius.

Book Synopsis The Mirror of the Gods by : Malcolm Bull
Download or read book The Mirror of the Gods written by Malcolm Bull and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the 15th century, the remains of the ancient gods littered the landscape of Western Europe. Christianity had erased the religions of ancient Greece and Rome and most Europeans believed the destruction of classical art was God's judgment on the pagan deities. How, then, didEuropean artists during the next three centuries create such monumental works as Botticelli's The Birth of Venus and Raphael's Parnassus? In The Mirror of the Gods, Malcolm Bull tells the revolutionary story of how the great artists of Western Europe--from Botticelli and Leonardo to Titian and Rubens--revived the gods of ancient Greece and Rome. Each chapter focuses on a different deity and sheds dazzling new light on suchfamiliar figures as Venus, Hercules, and Bacchus. Bull draws on hundreds of illustrations to illuminate the ancient myths through the eyes of Renaissance and Baroque artists, not as they appear in classical literature. When the wealthy and powerful princes of Christian Europe began to identify withthe pagan gods, myth became the artist's medium for telling the story of his own time. The Mirror of the Gods is the fascinating and extraordinary story of how Renaissance artists combined mythological imagery and artistic virtuosity to change the course of western art. The Mirror of the Gods profoundly deepens our understanding of some of the greatest and most subversive artwork in European history. This delightfully told, lavishly illustrated, and extraordinary book amply rewards our ongoing fascination with classical myth and Renaissance art.

Book excerpt: Internationally known worship leader and songwriter Matt Redman invites readers to a deeper understanding of what it means to reflect God’s dazzling radiance. In Mirror Ball, Redman eloquently illustrates why passion is more than a song or a feeling. It’s a story of guts and glory, pain, and purpose. For anyone ready to follow Jesus, passion is a way of life. Through story, Scripture, and practical inspiration, Redman encourages readers to remember that, however inadequate they may feel to live out this passion, God will work in and through them, just as light radiates through the smallest prism. After all, the same God who said “let there be light” has made His light to shine in their hearts, illuminating their lives and the lives of those around them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepare yourself for an eye-opening odyssey through magical, metaphysical realities The spaces between... ...Are filled with wonder, spectacle and the unexpected. So says Joseph, the ancient, discarnate spirit communicator in this, the eighth book of his internationally-acclaimed series, as he draws back the heavy curtain of 'reality' to reveal aspects of the world and of our physical and spiritual lives that have remained unnoticed, unseen and unappreciated for countless aeons. Within these pages you will meet the many wondrous expressions of spiritual life, both positive and negative, that co-habit and interact with us on Earth -- hugely influential beings that at worst have been dismissed entirely and at best confined to the realms of folklore and myth as a result of our current fascination with all things material and the glamour of our express-train society. You will also come face to face with and discover the nature of some of the deepest facets of yourself, allowing you to gain greater control over your life and to express and project the noblest aspects of 'you' into the world for your personal benefit, the benefit of all humanity and the good of the planet itself. Prepare yourself for an enlightening, enthralling and sometimes shocking journey through the parallel realms that exist around and within you at this very moment, waiting to once again be recognised and understood. ...By the last page you will be in no doubt that the 'spaces between' -- on Earth, in the heavens and deep within yourself -- are, in fact, anything but.

Download or read book Nectar #11 written by Babaji Bob Kindler and published by Sarada Ramakrishna Vivekananda Associations. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “V” is for Victory! In Vedanta, and in spiritual life per se, this equates to achieving success in maintaining the intimate and singularly meaninglful contact with Brahman, the Source of all Existence — even and especially in the midst of our daily life and routine. This is effectively brought about, as the timeless rishi, Vasishtha, relates, through mastery of the life-force (pranajaya), control of the mind (manojaya), attenuation of desires (vasanakshaya), and neutralization of karmas (karma-nirodha) — all penultimate to acquiring that special ability to focus upon Divine Reality to the exclusion of all else (samadhana) until the consummate inner connection (samadhi) is well-established. For this, it is necessary for the two forces of human aspiration and Divine Dispensation to work harmoniously together. To facilitate this in the timeless and time-tested Vedic tradition, advised and available to all, the aspirant utilizes Vedanta (the eternal path) to activate Vichara (self-inquiry) to increase Viveka (discrimination) to deconstruct Vivarta (false superimposition) to remove Vikalpas (mental projections) and destroy Vasanas (root desires) in order to establish Vairagyam (detachment) to become a Vidvan (wisdom-knower) and attain Vijnana (supreme realization). Thus, “V” is for Victory! With such salubrious teachings well-considered, we offer our current helping of Wisdom-Nectar, mainly of or based on the Vedanta. In past issues we have highlighted many of the world’s religions, thereby rendering heartfelt service to the excellent principle of Universality and the harmony of all religions; a timely theme, considering the state of the world and its affairs. But we, as Westerners — videlicet, temporarily embodied souls appearing in a Western setting but espousing no personal or permanent location other than the all-pervasive Atman — feel an inborn affinity with the timeless and eternal Vedanta and feel it has an especial message suited for these times. We thereby and herein emphasize it in a series of intriguing and galvanizing articles designed to preserve yet percolate our precious consciousness, keeping it pure and pellucid.
