Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did we and our fellow creatures arrive through Gods supernatural creation process or did we develop through a process commonly known as evolution? Is supernatural creation a collection of ancient fables integrated into religion? Is evolution simply an unproven theory better known as "Darwinism?" Did God literally mold Adam from mud and breath life into him or did humans evolve from cannibalistic molecules? Are we the result of eons of development from universal particles or are we the direct product of an intelligent designer? Are creation and evolution related? Bizarre questions such as these continually generate strife in society, politics, religion and education. GODS CHILDREN AND MONKEYS UNCLES employs a little science, a little religion, and a little humor to lead intelligent folk down a less tangled path to a thoughtful resolution.

Book excerpt: A tour-de-force by rising indy comics star Gene Yang, American Born Chinese tells the story of three apparently unrelated characters: Jin Wang, who moves to a new neighborhood with his family only to discover that he's the only Chinese-American student at his new school; the powerful Monkey King, subject of one of the oldest and greatest Chinese fables; and Chin-Kee, a personification of the ultimate negative Chinese stereotype, who is ruining his cousin Danny's life with his yearly visits. Their lives and stories come together with an unexpected twist in this action-packed modern fable. American Born Chinese is an amazing ride, all the way up to the astonishing climax. American Born Chinese is a 2006 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature, the winner of the 2007 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album: New, an Eisner Award nominee for Best Coloring and a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I don’t aspire to be nice. I do what is necessary to get what I want.” Born on the night of the nation’s independence, Gimme Lao is cheated of the honour of being Singapore’s firstborn son by a vindictive nurse. This forms the first of three things Gimme never knows about himself, the second being the circumstances surrounding his parents’ marriage, and the third being the profound (but often unintentional) impact he has on other people’s lives. Talented, determined and focused, young Gimme is confident he can sail the seven seas, but he does not anticipate his vessel would have to carry his mother’s ambition, his wife’s guilt and his son’s secret. Tracing social, economic and political issues over the past 50 years, this humorous novel uses Gimme as a hapless centre to expose all of Singapore’s ambitions, dirty linen and secret moments of tender humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociologist Jeffrey Guhin spent a year and a half embedded in four high schools in the New York City area -- two of them Sunni Muslim and two Evangelical Christian. At first pass, these communities do not seem to have much in common. But under closer inspection Guhin finds several common threads: each school community holds to a conservative approach to gender and sexuality, a hostility towards the theory of evolution, and a deep suspicion of secularism. All possess a double-sided image of America, on the one hand as a place where their children can excel and prosper, and on the other hand as a land of temptations that could lead their children astray. He shows how these school communities use boundaries of politics, gender, and sexuality to distinguish themselves from the secular world, both in school and online. Guhin develops his study of boundaries in the book's first half to show how the school communities teach their children who they are not; the book's second half shows how the communities use "external authorities" to teach their children who they are. These "external authorities" -- such as Science, Scripture, and Prayer -- are experienced by community members as real powers with the ability to issue commands and coerce action. By offloading agency to these external authorities, leaders in these schools are able to maintain a commitment to religious freedom while simultaneously reproducing their moral commitments in their students. Drawing on extensive classroom observation, community participation, and 143 formal interviews with students, teachers, and staff, this book makes an original contribution to sociology, religious studies, and education.

Book excerpt: This storybook is the second part of the book: "The Gods of The God's Own Country: THEYYAM Publishing published it as volume II because of Amazon's file size limit (650MB). The royalties from this book will be donated to those destitute Gods of the God’s Own Country for a Greater Purpose. The Gods of God's Own Country is a reminder of a forgotten culture and the communities surrounding it. Theyyam is a Dravidian ritual art form of Kerala, India - God's own country. This book provides detailed information about Theyyam, beautiful images, and hundreds of stories. We dedicate this book to the Theyyam artists, the veritable gods "Of the People, by the People, for the People." The author had the amazing grace of chasing the light with his camera during his management consulting, and volunteer roles, embarking upon expeditions in and around twenty countries over the past three decades. However, he has yet to catch sight of a place where over 500 gods descend upon the earth during a single season. Sandwiched between the Western Ghats mountain range (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the queenly Arabian sea, carpeted by natural greenery, the hilly terrains of North Malabar open it's off-beat paths for the Theyyam Gods to embrace the gods-forsaken disciples. Thanks to those Theyyam Gods, the Malabar corner is that truly shining city on a hill. These gods double-up as costume designers, painters, musicians, artisans, drummers, and choreographers. They transcend the human realms and have burgeoned into a mystical form, where they endure blazing fires and carry hefty costumes effortlessly. The Gods of The God's Own Country takes you on a whirlwind ride into the dense history and astonishing versatility of Theyyam, the ritual dance of the glistening cities atop the Malabar Hills of God's Own Country – Kerala. It is rich in captivating images of Theyyam and storytelling. The book's second part embarks on the Herculean task of covering the centuries-old, mesmerizing 101 Theyyam stories. Like the Blues in the Mississippi Delta, using song and dance, the Thottam and Theyyam express the melancholy of the Dravida, natives of God's Own Country, submerged under the 5000-year-old Chaturvarnya caste system. A true divine rebellion against mighty, unjust systems, their stories and art pluck a string in our own hearts today.
