Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the seventeenth century, English Puritan pastors often encouraged their congregations in the spiritual discipline of meditating on God and His Word. Today, however, much of evangelicalism is either ignorant of or turned off to the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle Plan for the Mind , pastor David Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation and motivate them to begin this work themselves. But he has not done this alone. Rather, he has labored through numerous Puritan works in order to bring together the best of their insights on meditation. Standing on the shoulders of these giants, Saxton teaches us how to meditate on divine truth and gives valuable guidance about how to rightly pattern our thinking throughout the day. With the rich experiential theology of the Puritans, this book lays out a course for enjoying true meditation on God’s Word. Table of Contents: 1. The Importance of Recovering the Joyful Habit of Biblical Meditation 2. Unbiblical Forms of Meditation 3. Defining Biblical Meditation 4. Occasional Meditation 5. Deliberate Meditation 6. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While von Balthasar's classic Prayer is unparalleled in its development of the Trinitarian, Christological, Mariological and ecclesiological dimensions of prayer, Christian Meditation is a short, readable and eminently practical guide to that form of prayer which God's revelation in Jesus Christ has made indispensable: meditation on the word of God revealing the inner depths of God to man and--since it comes from God made man--the inner depths of man to himself. In a treatment that is both fresh and profound, Balthasar describes the central elements of all Christian meditation, provides a guide for making the meditation and then points the way to the union that prayer achieves in the footsteps of Mary, within the Church and in and for the world. "Consequently, Christian meditation is entirely trinitarian and at the same time entirely human. In order to find God, no one need reject being human personally or socially, but in order to find God all must see the world and themselves in the Holy Spirit as they are in God's sight." - Hans Urs von Balthasar

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Calamy (1600-1666) was a Reformed Presbyterian preacher of the Gospel and one of the distinguished members of the Westminster Assembly. He was active to promote Reformed Theology in his day and was an eminent scholar of the Bible. In this wonderful treatise on godly meditation, Calamy shows that meditation on holy and heavenly things is a work that God requires at the hands of all His people. God requires Christians to pray, read Scripture, study and also requires them to meditate. God requires them to hear sermons, and still, requires them to meditate on the sermons they hear. What good is learning anything without chewing and thinking about it? Yet, there are few Christians who believe this doctrine, and it is all but lost today. In contrast, meditation is to be a regular part of the daily private devotions of the Christian. Meditation cultivates seriousness in the Christian for life and godliness. The highest seriousness makes the best scholar, and consequently, the best Christian. This is a searching and scanning, a deep dive into the things of God. Calamy teaches that meditating on godly truth is not something done once and forgotten; it is something done regularly and daily. It places the mind and will under the influence of the Spirit, and it helps them to avoid sin and glorify Christ. Many make excuses not to meditate because it is difficult. Some neglect it totally, and yet others may have simply never learned to do it rightly. There is a right way and wrong way to meditate or think on these high thoughts of the Lord. Serious thinking is fundamental to all right doing before Jesus Christ. One cannot be subject to Christ if one does not know or understand the will of Christ. To meditate in a godly manner, then, is to think like a Christian. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: The world around us teems with chaos and noise. We can change this turmoil by first changing the turmoil within us. That’s what Quiet Prayer is all about. In Quiet Prayer, bestselling author Marie Chapian introduces readers to the ancient Christian tradition of solitude and meditation—a way of being in the presence of God based on silence and stillness. She answers questions Christians may have, such as: Is it Christian to meditate? What is Quiet Prayer meditation? What are the benefits of Quiet Prayer? Through learning about the history of Christian meditation and practicing with Marie’s step-by-step guided meditations in the book, you can lean deeper into the Lord’s call to “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
