Book excerpt: After the first German edition in 2001 and a second edition in 2006 (which was in 2011 also published in English), there is now a very heavily revised 3rd edition of the book "Goddess Holle". Even though the basic framework of the 2nd edition has been retained, not only are minor and major errors corrected, but all chapters, the book calls them 'paths', are supplemented with many additional new parts (in varying degrees). This new book has therefore become considerably more extensive, in quantity there are about 182 pages more than in the 2nd edition; it contains more fairy tales, many more folktales, more hiking trails, more poetry and more plants that have a connection to Holle. In addition, the chapter about Customs and Traditional Folk Knowledge has been significantly changed and supplemented, and so is the chapter "Researchers and their Research" in which the latest available research sources have been incorporated, and theories, theses, etc. have also been added that were not in the previous edition. To the concluding path 'Culinary delights with Frau Holle' also were quite a few recipes added. The many illustrations, of which about 115 in color (including 14 maps), form a significant extension as well to the previous edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that the female characters found in popular folk and fairy tales are little more than inconsequential stereotypes--mostly serving as hapless victims in need of rescue, boring one-dimensional princesses, or egotistical and conniving villains. This book presents more fully-realized portraits of these female characters and the ways in which they actually represent bold and powerful connections to the goddesses of classic mythic narratives. The rich legacy of female goddesses, shamans, queens, and priestesses is in fact preserved and celebrated through these more modern representations, whether as brides who can transform into animals, wise old women who live alone in the deep wilderness, strong warrior maidens, or witches who can conquer and command the elements of nature. In contemplating this revised analysis of female characters within global folktales and fairy tales, readers can see that the goddesses of old have never truly been forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lexicon of Germanic deities fills a gap in its branch. It introduces goddesses and gods of Germanic peoples in the form of a lexicon. These are names of deities in inscriptions from Roman times, as well as deities from mostly medieval literary works from Iceland and Scandinavia, and goddesses and gods that are mentioned only in sources of later times, where the gathered collection of folk tales from the Renaissance on plays an important role. The quality of these sources varies greatly, all have their shortcomings and leave many questions unanswered. Regardless, this lexicon tries to explain all this as good as possible ... unambiguously and critically. The longer introductory chapter plays a central role in classifying and evaluating the provided information.

Book excerpt: While much work has been done on goddesses of the ancient world and the male gods of pre-Christian Scandinavia, the northern goddesses have been largely neglected. Roles of the Northern Goddess presents a highly readable study of the worship of these goddesses by men and women. With its use of evidence from early literature, popular tradition, legend and archaeology, this book investigates the role of the early hunting goddess and the local goddesses who were involved in all aspects of the household and the farm. What emerges is that the goddess was both benevolent and destructive, a powerful figure closely concerned with birth and death and with destiny of individuals.

Book excerpt: Hardly any other scripture from the time of the Roman Empire of about two thousand years ago has stirred up so much excited attention as the "Germania" of Tacitus. Only from this ethnographic essay do we know the name Nerthus, a goddess who should have been venerated by seven smaller Germanic tribes. Much of what the "Germania" tells us is meanwhile highly doubted. The 1st century original no longer exists; the intact copies were on their part copied from older "Germania" texts, which were also just copies. The existing copies are not identical to each other. That causes many question marks, which also concern this goddess Nerthus. This book is an attempt to place some exclamation marks in front of that, and is sometimes deliberately provocative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was about two thousand years ago the Roman historian Tacitus reported the Germanics venerated Mercury above all. He meant a Germanic God he equated with Mercury. Because Tacitus didn't denominate the name of that God, it had to be interpreted. Many centuries later scholars widely agreed that the name of this God must be Woden. Today that opinion is still taken as evidence. This assumption is assayed here on the basis of available primary sources - the result suggests serious doubts about the entrenched view. This book requires the willingness to leave comfortable and well-traveled, often-repeated views to examine unbiasedly apparent 'self-evidence facts'.
