Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can I Be Forgiven? In an out-of-the-way cemetery an unmarked tombstone bears the single word, Forgiven. A person can't help wondering, who was forgiven and by whom? What happened that caused someone to leave that message forever engraved upon his tombstone? The secret of that tombstone has long been buried. But one thing is certain, the need for forgiveness will always exist, since we all fail to live up to our word and others' expectations of us at one time or another. What is more serious is that we have failed to live up to what God expects of us No one is able to perfectly keep God's commandments. The Bible states it simply, "all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). "Your iniquities sins] have made a separation between you and your God" (Isaiah 59:2). Our disobedience separates us from our Creator. We need his forgiveness. But how can we know that God will forgive us? How could a perfectly just and righteous God overlook our sin? Our situation would be impossible if God had not settled the issue himself. He sent his Son--Jesus Christ--to earth to become a man, live a perfectly sinless life, and ultimately give his life for you and me. On the cross where Jesus died, he took the punishment for sin that we deserved. The Bible says God made Jesus to be sin for us, the One "who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Then Jesus rose from the tomb and came back to life three days later and was seen by hundreds of people (1 Corinthians 15:3-6). Can I Be Sure? Because of what Jesus has accomplished, it is possible to know that God will forgive you and one day receive you into heaven (John 14:1-3). You can have the assurance of God's forgiveness by making the following choices: Recognize that your sins have separated you from God. In honest repentance agree with God about your sinfulness and admit your need for forgiveness: "If we confess our sins, he God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Realize that God loves you, and believe that the sinless Jesus Christ died for your sins--taking the punishment you deserve: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). In response to your trust, God promises you eternity with him Receive Jesus Christ into your life by faith as your Savior from sin's consequences. When you respond to God's offer of forgiveness in faith, you can know that he has forgiven you. God's Book, the Bible, promises that "to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). If that is your heart's desire, right where you are you can pray something like this: Dear God, I know that I have sinned against many people and against you. I need your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ died for me and arose from the dead. I invite him into my life to be my Savior. Thank you for your gift of forgiveness and eternal life. Are you forgiven?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I love Halloween. Every year I turn on my front porch light to superheroes, animals, princesses, and pirates all dressed in cool costumes. It's exciting to hear the shouts: "Trick or treat!" and even more fun to give out candy with this Halloween treat. The candy you get this year may be really sweet, but even sweeter than candy is knowing how much God loves you! God thinks you're great just the way you are with freckles or warts or braces or crazy hair, it doesn't matter. God thinks you're so special that he sent his Son, Jesus, to give you a wonderful gift. The Bible calls this amazing gift eternal life, or life that lasts forever. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" John 3:16. Don't let anyone trick you into thinking you have to be extra good so that God will love you and let you into heaven one day. None of us can be good enough to earn God's love. All of us do bad things (sin) like telling lies, think-ing bad thoughts, or hurting other people. Our bad behavior pushes us away from God and we deserve to be punished. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23. But Jesus took our place and was punished for us when he died on the cross and rose again. That's how much he loves you. The Bible says: "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses (sins), made us alive together with Christ..." Ephesians 2:4,5. You know the candy people give you at Halloween? If you didn't accept it, it wouldn't be yours. The same is true with God's great gift of forgiveness and eternal life. You have to accept his gift. That means, ask Jesus to forgive you for the bad things you've done, and be-lieve that he died for you and rose to heaven to take away your sin. "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" Romans 6:23. If you want God's amazing gift of eternal life, then say a prayer like this: God, I'm sorry I do bad things. Please forgive me. I believe your only Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross and rose again to take away my sins. Thank you for loving me so much and giving me your gift of eternal life. Amen!

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years I have talked to thousands of people who have asked me how to find their way to God. Some have sat in church pews all their lives but never come to personally know God. Others have sought for ultimate meaning in all sorts of ways but never found the peace of mind for which they were searching. Some simply realize that there is something vital missing in their lives. The Bible teaches that this sense of lostness is rooted in the fact that we live in a fallen world. We are all handicapped by a sin nature: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). And despite our best efforts, we are unable to remove the haunting weight of guilt that separates us from our Creator. God sent his Son to solve the dilemma caused by our sin. "God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Jesus Christ made the way to God for us by his death on the cross. He purchased our salvation by the shedding of his blood. His death and resurrection made a new and everlasting covenant between God and humanity. Jesus told his disciples, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). He did not merely point the way to God. He himself claimed to be the only way to the Father and the source of eternal truth and life. The way to God is through personal faith in Jesus Christ. Intellectual acceptance of Christ is not enough. You must come to him determined to turn from what displeases him, with a total trust in Christ's saving power for you. Christ promises those who turn to him: "Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life" (John 5:24). Today you can come to him by surrendering your life and heart to Christ. The Bible says: "To all who did receive him [Jesus Christ], who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). Right where you are you can pray something like this: Lord, I know that I have sinned and need your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ died for me and rose from the dead. I invite you into my life to be my Lord and Savior. If you sincerely put your faith in Christ, God promises not only to forgive you, but also to adopt you into his family. It's the greatest gift you will ever receive!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long ago there were two villages in a distant land. One was in a valley, and one was on a mountaintop. The people in the mountain village wanted to give each person in the valley a Christmas gift. So the mountain townspeople formed a committee to think of something special. Money was limited, and each gift had to be of equal value to each person. After much time and discussion a decision was finally reached. The town's candy maker, an elderly gentleman who had loved Jesus for many years, came up with an idea--the candy cane. Now, you may be thinking, what is so special about a candy cane--and how can it ever be tied in with the real meaning of Christmas? Continue reading to find out how and why! 1 The candy cane is in the shape of a shepherd's staff. Jesus is our Shepherd, and we are his flock. A sheep follows his own shepherd, knows his voice, trusts him, and knows that he is totally safe with him. The sheep will follow no other shepherd than their own. In the same way, if we belong to Jesus, we are to follow only him. (John 10:11; Psalm 23:1; Isaiah 40:11) 2 The candy cane has a "J" shape--the first letter of Jesus's name. In the Bible, an angel came to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and said, "'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus'"(Luke 1:30-31). 3 The wide red stripes on the candy cane represent the blood Jesus shed on the cross for each one of us so that we can have eternal life through him. He restores us and cleans us with his shed blood--the only thing that can wash away our sin (Ephesians 2:13). 4 The white stripes on the candy cane represent Jesus's virgin birth and his pure, sinless life. He is the only human being who never committed a single sin, even though he was tempted just as we are. "He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth" (1 Peter 2:22). 5 The narrow red stripes on candy canes symbolize Jesus's stripes, or scars, which he got when he was arrested and whipped. The Bible says we are healed (of sin) because he took those wounds (Isaiah 53:5; 1 Peter 2:24). 6 The flavoring in the candy cane is peppermint, which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is of the mint family and was used in Old Testament times for purification and sacrifice (John 19:29; Psalm 51:7). 7 Candy canes are made of hard candy to remind us that Christ is the "rock" of our salvation. "He [Christ] alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken" (Psalm 62:2). 8 AND, if we share our candy cane with someone else because we love that person, we are sharing the love of Jesus (1 John 4:7-8). God gave himself to us when he sent Jesus to earth to save us. He loves us so much that he wants us to spend eternity with him. We are assured of that eternity when we trust and believe in Jesus as our Savior (John 1:12; John 3:3,16). Some people believe this story of the candy cane is only a legend. Others believe it really happened this way. Though there is uncertainty over how the candy cane was invented, it is an excellent picture of Christ and his love for you. If you'd like to receive Jesus as your Savior--here are some next steps: REPENT and ask God to forgive you. Trusting that Jesus came to save you from sin should cause genuine humility and remorse for the things you've done wrong. BELIEVE that God showed his love for you by sending his only Son Jesus to take away your sins. PRAY Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe that you died in my place and rose from the grave to pay the penalty for my sin. Come into my life as my Savior and cause me to love you and others in a way that pleases you. Thank you for saving me so that I can receive peace and eternal salvation in the new heavens and new earth. ATTEND a Bible-teaching church where you can worship God and meet other Christians. SHARE your faith. You've just received the wonderful gift of salvation--tell someone!

Book excerpt: Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, came to Jesus by night and confessed, "Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him." Jesus told Nicodemus, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:23) This declaration that Jesus made to Nicodemus holds true to all who seek forgiveness and eternal life. If we want to see Heaven, then we also must be born again. Many fear they cannot be forgiven for one particular sin or a multitude and are afraid they are unable to experience this new birth, which is God's gift of salvation. The purpose of this book is to share Gods way of forgiveness. No matter what you've done, no matter what sin or sins you've committed, you can be forgiven. You can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and you can receive His gift of eternal life. God's Word is quite clear. Whosoever desires forgiveness and salvation can be saved, and whosoever means you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent poll indicated that for every American who believes he or she is going to Hell, there are 120 who believe they're going to Heaven. This optimism stands in stark contrast to Jesus Christ's words written in the Bible: "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few"(Matthew 7:13-14). The truth is that according to the Bible we don't automatically go to Heaven. In fact, Hell--not Heaven--is our default destination. Unless our sin problem is solved once and for all, we can't enter Heaven. That's the bad news. But once that's straight in our minds we're ready to hear the good news of Jesus Christ--Jesus took upon himself, on the cross, the Hell we deserve so that we could experience for eternity the Heaven we don't deserve! The Only Two Options There are two possible destinations when we die--Heaven or Hell. Can we really know in advance where we'll go? John, one of the writers of the Bible, said this: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). We can know for sure that we'll go to Heaven when we die. Do you? To sin means to fall short of God's holy standards. Sin is what ended Eden's paradise. And all of us, like Adam and Eve, are sinners. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from a relationship with God (Isaiah 59:2). Sin deceives us and makes us think that wrong is right and right is wrong (Proverbs 14:12). Sin has terrible consequences, but God has provided a solution: "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). Jesus Christ, the Son of God, loved us so much that he became a man to deliver us from our sin. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). He came to identify with us in our humanity and our weakness, but he did so without being tainted by our sin, self-deception, and moral failings (Hebrews 4:15-16). Jesus died on the cross as the only one worthy to pay the penalty for our sins demanded by the holiness of God: "For our sake he [God] made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). But God raised Jesus from the grave, defeating sin's consequences and conquering death (1 Corinthians 15:3-4, 54-57). When Christ died on the cross for us, he said, "It is finished" (John 19:30). In those times "It is finished" was commonly written across certificates of debt when they were canceled. It meant "Paid in full." Christ died so that the certificate of debt, consisting of all our sins, could once and for all be marked "Paid in full." The Critical Decision Only when our sins are dealt with in Christ can we enter Heaven. We cannot pay our own way. Jesus said "No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Because of Jesus Christ's sacrificial death on the cross on our behalf, God freely offers us forgiveness. To be forgiven, we must recognize and repent of our sins. Forgiveness is not automatic. It's conditioned upon confession: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Christ offers to everyone the gifts of forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life. "Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price" (Revelation 22:17). There's no righteous deed we can do that will earn us a place in Heaven (Titus 3:5). We come to Christ empty-handed. We can take no credit for salvation. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). This gift cannot be worked for, earned, or achieved. It's dependent solely on Christ's generous sacrifice on our behalf. Now is the time to make things right with God. Confess your sinfulness and accept the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on your behalf. You are made for a person and a place. Jesus is the person, and Heaven is the place. They are a package--they come together. You cannot get Heaven without Jesus or Jesus without Heaven. "Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near" (Isaiah 55:6). For all eternity you'll be glad you did. If you understand what God has done to make forgiveness and eternal life possible for you, you may want to express it in words like these: "Dear Lord, I confess that I do not measure up to your perfect standard. Thank you for sending Jesus to die for my sins. I now place my trust in him as my Savior. Thank you for your forgiveness and the gift of eternal life."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lewis struck me as the most thoroughly converted man I ever met," observes Walter Hooper in the preface to this collection of essays by C.S. Lewis. "His whole vision of life was such that the natural and the supernatural seemed inseparably combined. "It is precisely this pervasive Christianity which is demonstrated in the forty-eight essays comprising God in the Dock. Here Lewis addresses himself both to theological questions and to those which Hooper terms "semi-theological," or ethical. But whether he is discussing "Evil and God," "Miracles," "The Decline of Religion," or "The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment," his insight and observations are thoroughly and profoundly Christian. Drawn from a variety of sources, the essays were designed to meet a variety of needs, and among other accomplishments they serve to illustrate the many different angles from which we are able to view the Christian religion. They range from relatively popular pieces written for newspapers to more learned defenses of the faith which first appeared in The Socratic Digest. Characterized by Lewis's honesty and realism, his insight and conviction, and above all his thoroughgoing commitments to Christianity, these essays make God in the Dock very much a book for our time.--Amazon.com.
