This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Mary Lou's mother passed away, she went searching for the God Box. But rather than one box, Quinlan found 10 containers stuffed with hundreds of origami-like folded papers. Covering the last 20 years of her mother's life, the notes contained a treasure of brief prayers for family, friends and people she had never even met. Note by note, Quinlan discovered the greatest lesson her mother could impart: the importance of letting go in order to live. Poignantly written and beautifully designed, The God Box is a gift for every parent, every son or daughter, every person who trusts in the permanence of love and the power of prayer.

Book excerpt: Paul, a religious teen living in a small conservative town, finds his world turned upside down when he meets Manuel—a young man who says he’s both Christian and gay, two things that Paul didn’t think could coexist in one person. Doesn’t the Bible forbid homosexuality? As Paul struggles with Manuel’s interpretation of the Bible, thoughts that Paul has long tried to bury begin to surface, and he finds himself re-examining his whole life. This is an unforgettable book on an extremely timely topic that strives to open minds on both ends of the spectrum.
Book Synopsis Blowing the Lid Off the God-Box by : Anne Robertson
Download or read book Blowing the Lid Off the God-Box written by Anne Robertson and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's in your God-box? Each of us, says author Anne Robertson, builds our own way of understanding God-our God-box-- and fills it up with bits of scripture, wisdom, and our experiences of God at work in our lives. It's a perfectly good way to puzzle out what God means to us. Encountering God through our human limitations, we learn something about the meaning of Incarnation. But to say that our experience of God is the only valid one is to put a lid on the box and create an idol. This book is about examining our God-boxes and bursting them wide open. Blowing the Lid Off the God-Box starts with the ministry of Jesus - who blew the lid off everyone's God-box by constantly challenging his followers with the unexpected. Subsequent chapters examine the God-boxes we create with scripture, worship, and political and social agendas.
Book Synopsis Outrageous Openness by : Tosha Silver
Download or read book Outrageous Openness written by Tosha Silver and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “playful, enlightening, and creative collection" (Spirituality and Practice) of spiritual lessons, anecdotes, and thoughts on the Divine’s intervention in our lives, this brilliantly written and wonderfully entertaining book teaches us how to live purposefully and in line with the Force of Love. “What if the Divine is constantly igniting roadside flares to get our attention? What if there actually is a Supreme Organizing Principle with an unbridled sense of humor? And what if we each have this ardent inner suitor who’s writing us love letters every day that often go unopened?” Whether we know it or not, we all experience the touch of the Divine in our lives every single day. After twenty-five years spent consulting and advising tens of thousands of people from all over the world, Tosha Silver realized that almost all of us have similar concerns: “How do I stop worrying? How can I feel safe? Why do I feel so alone?” and often, “Who am I really?” For the passionately spiritual and the bemusedly skeptical alike, she created Outrageous Openness. This delightful book, filled with wisdom and fresh perspectives, helps create a relaxed, trusting openness in the reader to discover answers to life’s big questions as they spontaneously arise. Outrageous Openness opens the door to a profound truth: By allowing the Divine to lead the way, we can finally put down the heavy load of hopes, fears, and opinions about how things should be. We learn how to be guided to take the right actions at the right time, and to enjoy the spectacular show that is our life.

Download or read book God in a Box written by Marion Pember and published by . This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you consider yourself "spiritual" but not "religious"? Do you shy away from associating with modern-day Christian churches, or do you avoid religion altogether? Perhaps you simply hang your hat on the spiritual peg...just in case? God in a Box takes a look at Christianity from the perspective of one who believes that religious fundamentalism is oppressive and controlling, with fear and guilt as the natural consequences. Author Marion Pember describes his journey from being a fundamentalist Christian to becoming a Christian agnostic-or a "recovering fundamentalist." His book eloquently explores what it means to believe in God, and introduces the concept of the "God box"-the metaphorical box that holds your personal beliefs about God, regardless of your religious background. The book also sheds light on the truth of the Bible hidden within the myth and metaphor found in the pages of scripture. Whether you're struggling with questions about fundamentalist beliefs or simply need to evaluate your own belief system, God in a Box offers clear, insightful logic. It's a thought-provoking study of what it means to be a Christian, offered in a way that everyone can understand-and enjoy.

Book Synopsis You Can't Put God in a Box by : Kelly Besecke
Download or read book You Can't Put God in a Box written by Kelly Besecke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of modernity brought with it a crisis of faith. Science had upended the religious certainties of earlier eras, and believers in the West were cast adrift. Some turned to a strident fundamentalism while, more recently, growing numbers have shunned religion altogether. In You Can't Put God In a Box, Kelly Besecke offers a fascinating examination of people who have found a middle way-what is known as "reflexive spirituality." Those who practice reflexive spirituality, Besecke shows, draw equally on religious traditions and traditions of reason in the pursuit of transcendent meaning. They prefer metaphor to literalism, spiritual experience to doctrinal belief, religious pluralism to religious exclusivism or inclusivism, and ongoing inquiry to "final answers." They find inspiration in liberal theologies of any number of faiths, and allies among the "spiritual but not religious." Besecke draws on original qualitative data to describe how people practiced reflexive spirituality in an urban United Methodist church, an interfaith adult education center, and a variety of secular settings. By doing so, she provides a window into the theological thinking of educated spiritual seekers and religious liberals, and shows how they have come up with a unique way of addressing the problem of modern meaninglessness.
