Book excerpt: Who's crazy and who's in charge of figuring it out? Karma Burns are those experiences that are usually spontaneous, inexplicable and more often unavoidable. Some persons may have more than the usual share of Karma Burns while others may only have a few. But it is the few experiences that are the more serious. Within this book are short stories of such events. Submitted in first person context, most of the Karma Burns you will read about are often funny. It is always good to inject humor in all experiences that are usually quite humbling. While there are recipients of Karma Burns and there are witnesses to these experiences, it is never clear what your role will be. As for the more serious Karma Burns, the irony can also be very entertaining. It is only with good intentions if you should relate to any of these stories. And, it is the author's wish that your Karma Burns are treatable.

Book excerpt: When twenty-year-old Bert Ray Libe read “Men wanted for Alaska to build a railroad—apply 526 Jackson Street” on a signboard in San Francisco one July morning in 1905, he immediately envisioned hunting adventures and gold-seeking opportunities in the rugged land of the north. The next morning his adventurous soul was infused with excitement as he boarded the SS Valencia bound for Seward, Alaska, accompanied by over four hundred other men, a woman dressed as a man, and a teenage boy. Bert was soon given the moniker, Fuzzy, by his shipmates because of his unruly hair. In a fascinating retelling of Bert’s adventures, Jzonay Reitz invites others to witness the breathtaking beauty of Alaska through Fuzzy’s eyes as he hunts in the pristine Kenai Mountains and traverses the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys of Southcentral Alaska, then ventures across snow-covered benches of Denali (Mt. McKinley) with four dogs and a sled and returns in the spring to search for gold in the glacial tributaries. Interspersed throughout his stories are an abundance of historical facts and revealing photographs. A Quest for Adventure is an inspiring and engaging memoir, brimming with energy and personality, and laced with humor even during challenging circumstances. KIRKUS REVIEW "A historically satisfying...memoir. Reitz intersperses occasional historical photographs and notes...particularly helpful in guiding the reader through her uncle's portrayals of Alaskan life, as in her detailed description of the lay of the land in the town of Seward in 1905...'Home Brew Alley'...'Millionaire's Row'..." ~Kirkus Indie - a review service from Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: As I get older and reflect back on my time on this earth, it is humorous in some respect that I seem to remember the good times. Moreover, in my case I tend to remember the funny things of even a bad situation. It's like your subconscious blocks out the bad things only letting you remember the pleasant circumstances of even an awful situation. Whatever makes this occurrence happen, in my case I think it is good in that it has provided me with a library of hilarious stories. A good story is like a fine bottle of wine and the key is the aging process. In the case of a story the more aging time the more embellished, embroidered, and simply blown way out of proportion the story becomes, and in my opinion, that is what makes a funny story a hilarious one. Therefore, I have propagated this theory throughout this book. . With all this in mind, I have tried to offer in the following stories the right amount of embellishment that will provide the reader with just enough body to paint the picture, but not too much to bog down the reader to boredom. Now I understand that what is humorous to one person may not be the same to another, but it is obvious to me that just the normal day-to-day events can sometimes be the funniest, and if the person can relate to these events within their own experience then in turn they are really laughing at themselves through someone else's eyes. Therefore, with that idea in mind, I am only asking that you sit back, relax, and enjoy the stories, with one different twist, and that is to laugh at me.
