In the competition for passengers, each of the companies developed its own distinctive style of poster advertising. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost ten years of genealogical research, on the Whiddon family, has provided a wealth of information that is the basis for an interesting story. The story in America began in 1635 when sixteen year old John Whiddon crossed the Atlantic and stepped onto Virginia soil. It continues through William, son of the immigrant, and covers nine generations. Although the author followed his direct line of descent, sufficient information is provided to permit other lines to be picked-up at any point. The story is told in semi-narrative form, with historical context, to make it human and personal. It covers the Whiddon family through time and place to give a clear picture of The Whiddon Heritage. Also, covered are the lines of descent of the other two sons of John the Immigrant. This book has the most extensive coverage of the Whiddons of Tudor England ever published. The Whiddon family of Chagford, in the county of Devon, was very prominent in the 16th and 17th centuries. The family reached it’s zenith under Sir John Whiddon, Judge of the King’s Bench. Included are several generations of this very powerful and influential family. They served both the Church and the English legal system. Captain Jacob Whiddon was a 16th century seadog, a privateer in the service of Sir Walter Raleigh. The mariners with whom he sailed included Sir Francis Drake and Sir Richard Grenville. Vivid accounts of his adventures are provided that includes the fight against the Spanish Armada and his voyage to South America to discover gold in El Dorado. The book is well illustrated to illuminate the lives of the Whiddon forebears.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No-one who knew the late Canon Pakenham-Walsh could accuse him of being a starry-eyed dreamer. At ninety he was as active mentally and physically as many a man little more than half his age. Join him on his personal journey across psychic channels to find the real Anne Boleyn; a journey which, beneath its psychic and historical drama, demonstrates religious purpose. The author's deep-rooted fascination for Anne Boleyn first originated in 1917 during a missionary trip in China, yet it was on hisreturn to England in 1919 that Pakenham-Walsh began to see divine confirmation of his desire to uncover the true Anne Boleyn. Following a prayer at Boleyn's burial site that she might become Pakenham-Walsh's guardian angel, Pakenham-Walsh experienced a series of bizarre coincidences. It was these strange incidents which led Pakenham-Walsh to seek clairvoyants, who helped to channel the spirit of Anne Boleyn. Through sessions with psychic mediums, the reader is presented with transcripts and accounts of psychic messages from Anne Boleyn and significant characters within Anne Boleyn's short lifetime. From one of Anne Boleyn's maids, put to death 'for the sake' of Anne Boleyn, to an infuriated Henry VIII, Pakenham-Walsh vividly recounts his experiences in a sympathetic and quaint style. Canon Pakenham-Walsh's narrative not only relates his experiences of mediumistic contact, it is also a powerful Christian morality tale of redemption transcending death.

Book excerpt: Eighth-century martyr St Boniface, tennis player and TV presenter Sue Barker, painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, scholar Sir Thomas Bodley, actor Sir Donald Sinden, Boer War commander Sir Redvers Buller, radio and TV presenter Ed Stewart and round-the-world yachtsman Sir Francis Chichester are among personalities through the ages who have been born in Devon. The county can claim many more who were either born or lived here for a major part of their lives, including Scott of the Antarctica, Agatha Christie, Parson Jack Russell (of terrier fame) and Wayne Sleep. The Elizabethan explorers Sir Francis Drake, Sir Humphrey Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh were all Devonians, as were party leaders Michael Foot and David Owen. This book, by renowned local author John Van der Kiste, features mini-biographies of all these and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does landscape matter to us? We rarely articulate the often highly individual ways it can do so. Drawing on eight remarkable unpublished diaries, Jeremy Burchardt demonstrates that responses to landscape in modern Britain were powerfully affected by personal circumstances, especially those experienced in childhood and youth. Four major patterns are identified: 'Adherers' valued landscape for its continuity, 'Withdrawers' for the refuge it provides from perceived threats, 'Restorers' for its sustaining of core value systems, and 'Explorers' for its opportunities for self-discovery and development. Lifescapes sets out a new approach to landscape history based on comparative biography and deep contextualization, which has far-reaching implications. It foregrounds family structures and relationships and the psychological dynamics they generate. These, it is argued, were usually a more decisive presence in landscape encounters than wider cultural patterns and forces. Seen in this way, landscape can be understood as a mirror reflecting our innermost selves and the psychosocial influences shaping our development. This is a compelling and original study of the relationship between individual lives and landscapes.
